Le tout premier disque solo de Mike. Somptueux de part en part… Notamment Smallcreep’s day suite…

Tracklist

(Rutherford)

It’s so very dark in here
There’s water on the wall
I can see no lights and what’s that sound
That droning far above the smoke
And everywhere I look their eyes are watching me.

Hello my friend
The day is long and I am very hot
This metal world
The lower half of every face is lit
Everytime I look the clock is calling me
On the tick and the tock.

I’ve got my love to get me there
But I’ve more pain that I can bare
There is a world to find and share
Oh Saturday – Oh Saturday
And I can see a dying race, who live their lives
On the tick and the tock, in between.

(Rutherford)

I’m hopelessly waiting in line
For what I don’t know I don’t mind
There’s never a day that goes by
Without blood on my hands in my hair.

I’m hopelessly working in line
On what I don’t care I don’t mind
There’s nothing that I would give
To see what comes out at the end.

(Rutherford)

(Rutherford)

Say I’m going, yes I am going in another day,
Coz if I do go home I’ve nothing left to say.
I’m a man who clocked on but out of my life.
When the lights go out tonight I’ll make my move.
Too many years and all those tears have gone so deep inside me.
Oh No!

Along the edge, above the metal dreamlike streamlike world.
Way up above looking down up row after row of factory machines.
There’s no time like the present.
Singing a song I brought along to keep me company.

Aching back, my breath coming fast my feet getting lighter, I
I feel kind of dizzy

Running up, I’m running down.
I am nearly there, I am, I’m nearly there.
The light in the distance is getting so much brighter.
I’m a no-man in a no-man’s land.

The metal girders that stand all around have now gone.
The sky through the skylight’s a different shade of blue.
Cats and rats in this neighbourhood,
Cats and rats in this neighbourhood.
Look different to me.

Let it be a better day – for you my love.
Let it be a better day – for me my love.

The day is nearly ended hurry home to your bed
My nights are oh so lonely come and lay down your head
The eyes of all our children growing heavy with sleep
And with one final flicker into a world full of dreams.

Oh I need you now through the lonely nights
And when the morning comes upon us
I’ll be holding you so close to me.

The grass is never greener either side of the wall
If I am here or somewhere many miles away
For I have come to realize nothing changes at all.

Oh I need you now through the lonely nights
And when the morning comes upon us
I’ll be holding you so close to me.

(Rutherford)

And I feel like the night is closing – I know it is
Do you feel it burning in my blood
Burning in my blood like it’s setting me fire.

And I feel like a cloud is closing in – I know it is
As I slip into a hazy crazy world – I know I am
Sooner or later moonshine in my brain
Turning me around till there’s madness in the air.

Turning water into wine, till there’s nothing left to burn
Courage deserted me tonight.

And in the moments that I have when peace is all around
I can see clearly now, and what I see
There’s your world and there’s mine
There’s so little in between
But listen my love
We will never know which one of us has got it right.

Coz baby the things I do are hurting everyone
I know they are. I’ve got to try to find the door
Sooner or later it will turn me inside out
Begone all those who would torment me
I’ve an answer for you now.

And I’m glad it’s not late to give it up – I know it’s not
All I need’s a year or two to rearrange – to rearrange
I can feel it burning in my blood
Turning me around till there’s madness in the air.

Turning water into wine, till there’s nothing left to burn
Courage deserted me tonight.

And in the moments that I have when peace is all around
I can see clearly now, and what I see
There’s your world and there’s mine
There’s so little in between
But listen my love
We will never know which one of us has got it right.

Turning water into wine, till there’s nothing left to burn
Courage deserted me tonight.

Turning water into wine, till there’s nothing left to burn
Courage deserted me tonight.

(Rutherford)

It’s been so many years since I saw your face,
But now I’m home again back in my old place
And though you’re not quite sure you think you see me by the door
I’ll be there.

When the winter comes knocking on the door
And you’ve the firelight dancing on the floor
In the dead of night when every star is burning bright
I’ll be there

Time and time again
I am always there to see you through the night
Time and time again
Rest your tired head and it will be alright
and after all is said, is said and done
Oh God you’ll never know
Just how lonely life can be for me.

So let me tell you now what it’s like to be
The one whose memories are scattered on the sea
When the wind goes down you’ll see them lying all around.

On a cloudy day, high up in the sky
There’s a lonely bird who’s sailing round and round
Looking for a place to land down on the ground, for a while
Over and over again
Please give your love to me
Throw it in the wind and I’ll be there.

Deep within the darkness I’m the shadow next to yours
I’ll be there.

Time and time again
I am always there to see you through the night
Time and time again
Rest your tired head and it will be alright
And after all is said, is said and done
Please give your love to me
Throw it in the wind and I’ll be there.

(Rutherford)

There never was a moment I wasn’t sure
I would be someone who roamed the world
And when the time was ready and so was I
get out of here onto the streets
Who’ll make everything better, who’ll make everything better.

The life that I was living, the great outdoors
Stars up above me everynight, as I lay down my head
Who’ll make everything better, who’ll make everything better.

Get out of bed I hear them singing all along the way
You’re where you want to be out on the open road again
Ain’t that peculiar, you’re on you’re own again
You’re on your own, on your own, I guess you always were.

One day you come to realise you’re getting old
No one to share the lonely days, to be together
Who’ll make everything better, who’ll make everything better.

Get out of bed I hear them singing all along the way
Too late to change it all, the gypsy in your blood has gone
Ain’t that peculiar, you’re on your own again
You’re on your own, on your own, until the very end.

(Rutherford)

How, how can I
How can I be back here again
It was just the other day.

That I, I said I
I said I would be moving on
Seems to me I’m going round and round
It’s the only way I know.

Every road that I take is the same
Everyway I go, everyday I go
Leading me back the way I’ve just come
Every road that I take is the same
Don’t be sorry please, don’t you worry please
I will be back again very soon.

Then, when I know
I know that I have stayed too long
And there’s nothing left for me to say
So I’ll be on my way

Every road that I take is the same
Everyway I go, everyday I go
Leading me back the way I’ve just come
Every road that I take is the same
Don’t be sorry please, don’t you worry please,
I will be back again very soon.

Follow me now, wherever I go
Follow me now.

(Rutherford)

Get the money and run
Now’s not the time to hang around
Overnight job it’s an overnight job
Anymore for anymore
Think it over, you’ve always got to be
Just one more step ahead
Everyone said that it couldn’t be done
And I know that’s why you’re here tonight
You’ve got everything that you need for the job
I hope that it all works out right.

Out on the streets at the dead of night
There’s nobody else around
Overnight job it’s an overnight job
Anymore for anymore
Think it over, you’ve always got to be
Just one more step ahead
Coz everyone said that it couldn’t be done
And I know that’s why you’re here tonight
Over your shoulder the day’s getting bolder
The shadows are fading away.

Because everyone’s got it inside, just a little bit somewhere

Overnight job it’s an overnight job
Think it over, you’ve always got to be
Just one more step ahead
Everyone said that it couldn’t be done
And I know that’s why you are here tonight
Over your shoulder the day’s getting bolder
The shadows are fading away.

Tracklist

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

I held the book so tightly in my hands,
I saw your picture, heard you call my name
There was something strange, I could not look away
I wanted to be there, I wanted to go

You gave me no warning
You gave no reason
But I was with you
Right by your side
Just give me the strength, and I will help you
And they can try their hardest, cos they don’t frighten me

It is written in the book

It is hotter than I’ve known before, but I feel so cold, and I don’t
know why
But if the fire within your heart can beat the storm
Then I really believe, you could make it right

Ooh the time has come now
We must show our feelings
But I’m looking right through you
And your heart is empty

Whatever happened to you it’s too late to change now
There’s nowhere you can run to, no place to hide
Ah you let me down!

…but wait a minute, I don’t understand
It’s getting stronger, so grab my hand
Don’t wanna leave you, don’t wanna go
But I’m losing all control
Can’t you see me? I’m slipping away
I can only stay if you’ve the will to keep me here

It is written in the book

Oh so many times since I’ve read those words
Just waiting to see you, can you see me?

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

Times were good,
She never thought about the future, she just did what she would
Oh but she really cared
About her music, it all seemed so important then,

And she dreamed that every time that she performed
Everyone would cry for more,
That all she had to do was step into the light,
And everyone would start to roar.

And on the road,
Where all but a few fall by the wayside on the grassier verge,
She battled through
Against the others in her world, and the sleep, and the odds.

But now everytime that she performed
Oh everybody cried for more,
Soon all she had to do was step into the light,
For everyone to start to roar.
And all the people cried, you’re the one we’ve waited for.

Oh but time went by
It wasn’t so easy now, all uphill, and not feeling so strong.
Yes times were hard,
Too much thinking ’bout the future and what people might want.

And then there was the time that she performed
When nobody called for more
And soon everytime she stepped into the light,
They really let her know the score.
But she dreamed of the times when she sang all her songs
And everybody cried for more,
When all she had to do was step into the light
For everyone to start to roar.
And all the people cried, you’re the one we’ve waited for.

(Banks)

I am the one who guided you this far,
All you know and all you feel.
Nobody must know my name
For nobody would understand,
And you kill what you fear.

I call you for I must leave,
You’re on your own until the end.
There was a choice but now it’s gone,
I said you wouldn’t understand,
Take what’s yours and be damned.

(Rutherford)

I’m one of many, I speak for the rest but I don’t understand
Tonight tonight, oh tonight, tonight
He brings another day another night, another fight
Well there’s another day done and there’s another gone by
He’s a man of our times a man of our times
Tonight tonight, oh he’s burning bright

He’s a man of our times, he’s a man of our times, ooh, ooh, ooh.
And in the beating of your heart there is another beating heart

All at once I can see what we do,
Me into me and you into you
Me into me and you into you
Tonight, tonight, oh he’s s burning bright
Everyone is on their feet cos he is out, out on the street
There’s another day done and there’s another gone by.
No more me into me and you into you
Tonight tonight, oh he’s burning bright.

Man of our times, he’s a man of our times
He’s a man of our times, ooh, ooh, ooh.
And in the beating of your heart, there is another beating heart

He’s a man of our times…

(Collins)

There must be some misunderstanding
There must be some kind of mistake
I waited in the rain for hours
And you were late

Now it’s not like me to say the right thing
But you could’ve called to let me know
I checked your number twice, don’t understand it
So I went home

Well I’d been waiting for this weekend
I thought that maybe we could see a show
Never dreamed I’d have this feeling
Oh but seeing you is believing
That’s why I don’t know why
You didn’t show up that night

There must be some misunderstanding
There must be some kind of mistake
I was waiting in the rain for hours
And you were late

Since then I’ve been running around trying to find you
I went to the places that we always go
I rang your home but got no answer
Jumped in my car, I went round there
Still don’t believe it
He was just leaving

There must be some misunderstanding
There must be some kind of mistake…

(Banks)

No cloud, a sleepy calm,
Sunbaked earth that’s cooled by gentle breeze,
And trees with rustling leaves,
Only endless days without a care,
Nothing must be done.

Silent as a day can be,
Far-off sounds of others on their chosen run
As they do all those things they feel give life some meaning,
Even if they’re dull.

It’s time to stop this dreaming, must rejoin the real world
As revealed by orange lights and a smoky atmosphere.

The trees and I are shaken by the same wind but whereas
The trees will lose their withered leaves,
I just can’t seem to let them loose.
And they can’t refresh me those hot winds of the south.
Oh I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place.

Now the light is fading fast,
Chances slip away, a time will come to pass
When there’ll be none,
Then addicted to a perfumed poison,
Betrayed by its aftertaste,
Oh we shall lose the wonder and find nothing in return.
Many are the substitutes but they’re powerless on their own.

Beware the fisherman who’s casting out his line
Into a dried up river bed,
But don’t try to tell him ‘cos he won’t believe you.
Throw some bread to the ducks instead, it’s easier that way.
I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place.

The trees and I are shaken by the same wind but whereas
The trees will lose their withered leaves,
I just can’t seem to let them loose.
And they can’t refresh me those hot winds of the south.
I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place.

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

All I need is a TV show, that and the radio
Down on my luck again, down on my luck again
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
It’s driving me mad just another way of passing the day
I, I get so lonely when she’s not there
I, I, I…

You’re just another face that I know from the TV show
I have known you for so very long I feel you like a friend
Can’t you do anything for me, can I touch you for a while
Can I meet you another day and we will fly away

I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
It’s driving me mad it’s just another way of passing the day
I, I get so lonely when she’s not there
I, I, I…

Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again I can see another face
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again I can see another face
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again

(Rutherford)

There’s nothing here that I can understand
And no one cares I’m a lonely man
I touch your face and I don’t know why
I call your name but you’re going by
Now I’m alone again.

I have no name for each and every day
Until the year is done and fades away
There’s a time in between the two
The old years gone by but it’s not the new
And I, I, I…

I know that’ll be all
Alone again, alone again tonight oh I’m
Alone again, alone again tonight oh I’m
Alone again, and it seems to me that every time I try to change
Say that you’re say that you’ll
Help me reach the other side

When the morning comes the sun is out
And warms me up again
What a funny world it is for me
And all I’ll never be

It’s not enough, it’s not enough
This feeling I’m feeling inside
Oh I know it I know tonight that I’ll be

On my own tonight, alone again tonight
Oh I’m alone again, alone again tonight
Oh I’m alone again, and it seems to me that everytime I try to change
Say that you’ll, say that you’ll
Help me reach the other side
Help me please cos I know I’m gonna be
On my own again alone again tonight…

(Banks)

Wake up now, this is the time you’ve waited for.

Far below, where shadows fester as they grow,
An army thousands strong, obsessed by right and wrong,
They sense their time is coming near.
So they turn towards the light from their region of the night,
Marching on and on,
They near the air, it won’t be long.

You know you’re on the way out,
It’s just a matter of time.
You thought you’d rule the world forever,
Long live the king, and don’t spare the loser.

After all, you’re not what you thought you were at all.
You’re just a natural fact, another cul-de-sac
On nature’s hard unfeeling trail.
Now all those dreams of old will be stories left untold,
Cut off in your prime, extinct until the end of time.

You know you’re on the way out,
It’s just a matter of time.
You thought you’d rule the world forever,
Long live the king, but don’t spare the loser now…

Now the host emerges, and a shadow starts to fall.
Not one knows what hit them, none can see at all.
Even as the end approaches still they’re not aware,
How can you fight a foe so deadly
When you don’t even know it’s there?
And now that the job is almost done
Maybe some escape, no, not even one.

You know they’re on the way out,
It’s just a matter of time.
You thought you’d rule the world forever,
Long live the king, and don’t spare the loser.

(Collins)

Ooh please don’t ask me how I feel, I feel fine
Oh I cry a bit, I don’t sleep too good, but I’m fine
When can I see you?
When can I touch you?

Again and again I ask myself was I wrong?
Oh but time’s a healer, and heaven knows I’ve been strong
Maybe we could try
Maybe we would work this time

Oh I can remember when it was easy to say I love you
But things have changed since then, now I really can’t say if I still do
But I can try
Cos I know the kids are well, yes you’re a mother to the world
Oh but I miss my boy
I hope he’s good as gold

But enough of me, tell me how are you? You look good
Oh you’ve lost some weight I can see, your hair looks nice, you look
good
Maybe we should try, don’t say it! I know why

But y’know, I can remember when it was easy to say I love you
But things have changed since then, now I really can’t say if I still do
But I can try
Cos I know the kids are well, yes you’re a mother to the world
But I miss my boy
Oh I hope he’s good as gold

J’ai vu ta photo, entendu appeler mon nom

Ne peux-tu me voir?

Attendant juste de te voir, peux-tu me voir?

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

(Collins)

Mais mon garçon me manque
J’espère qu’il est aussi bon que l’or

Tu as une bonne apparence

Mais mon garçon me manque
J’espère qu’il est aussi bon que l’or

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

Tracklist

You couldn’t run, you couldn’t hide, they had their spies out on your track
You had some fun, you took a ride, you tried to fit into the pack
But all the time they knew you lied, they knew that you’d be bound to crack
Hospital Carolina

You dreamed of stars, of open cars and surfing out on Malibu
You drank in bars and Miromars, you shot the dice and skimmed the pool
You thought of saving your integrity before it came up for renewal
Hospital Carolina – so who needs Rudolf Steiner?

Let me hear you now
“Um and aargh, um and aargh, um”, was all he told me
I’m catching beriberi and I am feeling so low
“This is much too good for the people” he said
I said “don’t people have minds of their own?”
And it’s better that you agree
In this best of best industries
I was in the midst of a dream
I felt like shouting something obscene

A man appeared, he had a beard, he had a dog right at his feet
I said, “My song?”, he said “It’s long, it’s got no balls”,
I said: “that’s neat, but it took me thirty years to write”,
He said, “your image is incomplete”.
Hospital Carolina

The curtains up, the spotlights on, they’ve got you spitting at the crowd,
A needle match, a little scratch, and you’re above the busy cloud,
Going out and getting in a fight it makes the news, so you’ll be proud
Hospital Carolina – so who needs Rudolf Steiner?

Let me hear you now
“Um and aargh, um and aargh, um”, was all he told me
I’m catching beriberi and I am feeling so low
“This is much too good for the people” he said
I said “don’t people have minds of their own?”
And it’s better that you agree
In this best of best industries
I was in the midst of a dream
I felt like shouting something obscene

They’ve washed you up, they’ve squashed you up,
You find your brain is going bad
You played the game, its all the same, the wisest fools are really mad
You take a gun, to save our sons, and, God, his brain is bullet-proof
And so it’s welcome to the ministry of everlasting truth
Hospital Carolina – so who needs Rudolf Steiner?

Let me hear you now
“Um and aargh, um and aargh, um”, was all he told me
I’m catching beriberi and I am feeling so low
“This is much too good for the people” he said
I said “don’t people have minds of their own?”
Shooting to the top, be a great tin god
Then plummet to obscurity well,
And its better that you agree
In this best of best industries
And it’s better not to presume
Or it’s you that we will consume.

Used to lie awake
Frightened of the dark
Used to count the ghosts
Out in the hallway
Childhood fancies flee
And we learn to trust the night
But I’m haunted by a
Different kind of story.
And through me sleep,
You’re shining, filling my eyes

I want your love
I need your love
I’m holding on
Getting tangled up so badly
You’re giving me such a time
Don’t play the game
Don’t make me feel a fool.
I’m not superstitious,
Your love is the richest
I’m not superstitious,
This could be the special one.

April swept the streets
Pools of rain
She was borne away
Upon a silver steamer
Then, one afternoon
Someone ushered Summer in
I was forced to make a choice
Before the dream had settled
And now you stand your beauty
Filling my eyes.

I want your love
I need your love
I’m holding on
Getting tangled up so badly
You’re giving me such a time
Don’t play the game
Don’t make me feel a fool.
I’m not superstitious,
Your love is the richest
I’m suspicious,
This could be the special one.

She makes her face up in the looking glass
The bell is counting down the time
They’re shouting out to see the princess dance
She takes the key and starts her climb

Lucy, now that you’re famous,
Lucy, you’re still my dream,
Lucy, will you remember?
Lucy, oh Lucy will.

I always knew you’d reach the dizzy heights
And leave me stranded far below
And though it’s years since we were put to flight
My heart is aching still to know

Lucy, now that you’re famous,
Lucy, you’re still my dream,
Lucy, will you remember?
Lucy, oh Lucy will.

And so the lights burn out your name tonight
Back in your room the crowds all leave
Have fame and fortune been the dream you hoped
Or is it just a hollow scheme?

Lucy, now that you’re famous,
Lucy, you’re still my dream,
Lucy, will you remember?
Lucy, oh Lucy will

Side door, you’ll be the one
Side door, I’m telling you, won’t be undone
Side door, we’re coming on through
Side door, so steady so gentle and true
Someone with whom to take a broader view

Lockjaw, you won’t be the one,
Lockjaw, you’re out of date, old-fashioned fun,
Something to make you sleepy in the sun.

Nothing could be be so simple
Give a little bit more, you’ll soon see why
She’s hiding beneath her covers,
You’re playing it a bit cool
Your head’s up high, hang it down
And then love will come and see you
Happily on your way
Happily on your way
Happy to find your way.

Side door, you’re letting me in
Side door, I’m shutting you, keep out of the wind
She’s such a treat and oh, so masculine

Ground floor, you’re letting me down,
Ground floor, you show me the best place in town,
Somewhere discreet, to let our toupees down.

Nothing could be be so simple
Give a little bit more, you’ll soon see why
She’s hiding beneath her covers,
You’re playing it a bit cool
Your head’s up high, hang it down
And then love will come and see you
Happily on your way
Happily on your way
We’re happily on…

Nothing could be be so simple
Give a little bit more, you’ll soon see why
She’s hiding beneath her covers,
You’re playing it a bit cool
Your head’s up high, hang it down
And then love will come and see you
Happily on your way
Happily on your way
We’re happily on your way
Happy to find your way.

Side door, you’ll be the one

Where we are, it’s cold and lonely
There we are, oh God if only
Either one of us would go away

Where we are, is next to nowhere
Even the highway just hates to go there
Nothing in the world could make it stay

Why do we sit here in misery
Is it democracy or just insane?
You and your yen to be high in society
Speaking financially, it looks like rain:
And you say: “boy, you better be nice to me
I’ll get what is coming to you
I’ll take all the property too”.

Where we are is holy deadlock
God had a nerve when he named it wedlock
Couldn’t he have found another way?

Where we are, it’s cold and lonely
There we are, oh God if only
Either one of us would go away

Why do we sit here in misery
Is it democracy or just insane?
You and your yen to be high in society
Speaking financially, it looks like rain:
And you say: “boy, you better be nice to me
I’ll get what is coming to you
I’ll take all the property too”.

There was once a Marionette
Who walked in fields of silk and pearl, so light,
Then the darkness came upon me
I awoke, I could not see her face
Her voice across dark waters spoke
Please turn on the light, it’s growing cold.

She was once my Lady Friend,
I’d loved her countless times before, so light,
Then the darkness crept upon her
I awoke, I could not hear her voice
She left no sign or souvenir
Please turn on the light, it’s cold in here.

Something tells me we’ve burnt out all our boats
Setting sail upon a storm-ridden sea,
And putting faith in the Gods of ancient times
I had believed we could be strong and supreme
She was like a breath of autumn
She fell like the chestnut leaves.

So the moons rise slowly now
In swirling mists I dimly see, darkly,
Trapped in cobwebbed tunnel darkness.
Still as then, I cannot see her face,
Her voice is still accosting me.
Please turn out the lights, the last to leave.

(instrumental)

Say no word
She watched as she waited
By the iron gate
Veiled in black brocade
Tom was all alone
She spoke soft but breathless,
He took the half-a-crown
And thought how strange

Long ago, she knew a man
Who sailed the seas
And gave her a daughter
Through the vanished years
Fate bestowed a lady’s seat
She honoured it with grace
Hid the past and with it me

And now, she is everything to me
Though I was denied her tenderness
Years spent in gloom
I cried in my room
I believed I’d been quite deserted
But now that I find
She gave everything to me
Until it became quite impossible
Scorn upon scandal
Helpless to handle
She’s bitterly breaking now
Why is my dream disturbed?

Cold cut the wind
We pitched as we tossed
From cobblestone to track
Along the old canal
Fierce came the frost
The stone changed to pasture
Could anyone survive?
Has anybody seen?

Long ago a fox found out,
They laid the captain dead at his masthead
Searching everywhere,
Questioning the wind and trees
I beat the empty air,
Knowing it has seen her face
And now, I’d give everything to know
Why my flesh and blood must suffer so
Turning and tossing
From river to crossing
Causing great confusion
If only she knew she was everything to me,
Alone now, somewhere, she’s imploring me
Oh, please forgive me
I’ve been so thoughtless
She’s bitterly breaking now

For, she is everything to me
Though I denied her tenderness
Years spent in gloom
I cried in my room
I believed I’d been quite deserted
But now that I find
She gave everything to me
Until it became quite impossible
Scorn upon scandal
Helpless to handle
I pray we are not too late….

Bleak rose the towers
The rain lashed the horses
We found the gate ajar
Her cloak lay in a heap
The captain’s furled his sails
It comes as no surprise
She’s no longer here.

She drinks the morning air
She takes the utmost care
She’s very good
She sets the flowers aright
She gives the birds their flight
She’s very good – she’s very good to me.
Westminster strolling
Battersea rolling by
And in the night
You will find her at her easel
Drawing ducks and drakes,
Cathedral eyes
She is one of the best
You can be sure of it

Magdalen, of the misty eyes
You didn’t think I’d lose you again
Magdalen, sees the shifting skies
Her majesty makes mighty of men
Magdalen’s gone to Edinburgh spires
And she’s holding your life in her hands

Who holds the world outside?
Who stills the rising tide?
She’s very good
Who weaves the stars display?
Who seals the dwindling day?
She’s very good – she’s very good to me,
Oxford bells ringing,
Phantom choirs singing.

Magdalen of the misty eyes,
The world is waiting at your behest
Magdalen, sees the shifting skies
And old St. Ives stands firm in the West
Magdalen’s gone to Edinburgh spires
And she’s holding your life in her hands.

We watch the autumn glow
We take the evening slow
It’s very good
We hear the vespers rung
And night’s web deftly spun
It’s very good, it’s very good that she
Sleepy car stories;
Lighthouse lives
Gulls crying, “storm!”
And in the night
You will find her in the sistine chapel
Looking down
Cathedral mind
She was here from the start
She has seen all of it…

Magdalen, of the misty eyes
You didn’t think I’d lose you again
Magdalen, sees the shifting skies
Her majesty makes mighty of men
Magdalen’s gone to Edinburgh spires
And she’s holding your life in her hands
Holding our lives in her hands

Tracklist

Can you light a fire in Winter’s face
Or say why a life has gone to waste
Pleasure Island was on overcrowded place
Cleopatra’s Needle conquered fear
One more nail in your coffin dear
Endless torture for at least two thousand years
(Every Day)
What’s the use of friendship, who am I
Hell bent on destruction, how I tried
You became a ghost to me long before you died

A gipsy compliment for (kneel down)
The scent of tyranny’s daughter (we are found)
At seventeen were bled in wild cream
Passing milk thistle by
Fox on the run
Old ragged robin flies
Virtue undone
A garland of green flowers (field of lime)
Surround a silver smoke tree (yours and mine)
Sweet marigold, not easy to find
Passing milk thistle by
Fox on the run
Old ragged robin flies
Virtue undone

In a very large factory I belong
And I work the night shift oll week long
Freddy on a chainsaw lost his feet
Thinking ’bout a blonde he’ll never meet
Tried to take his life again the other week
Keep your chin up, haven’t a care are you?
Just join the party, allegiance I swear
What’s the matter with Arthur Royal
I’ll go and top up his batteries and check the oil
Arthur blew a fuse two days ago,
Set himself alight, you didn’t know
Nearly burnt us down the twit just had to go
Take your chances, live on hot air
Chance of promotion, I’ll take that chair
Dreaming of golden sounds and palm trees
I said file these quickly and then staple these
Get yourself altered undo the seam, get back just
In time for tea (and don’t be late mind)
Nobody’s perfect least of all me
Married the job at age 23
Just keep my nose clean egg chips and beans
I’m always full of steam

(instrumental)

Just like his old father before him
Who served in the great war would sing
We’re proud to serve Kaiser or King
They’ll always find someone who’s willing
To take Tigermoth chances alone
The boy that should never have flown
Wos thrown o hundred yards
Blown into smithereens
A crowd drew near but failed to hear
Look I’m over here and still one of you wait
The young man’s despondence soon halted
When gently a voice that he knew
Took shope slowly out of the blue
Flight Captain Jornes at your service
Last month I went down in the drink
You’re not as alone as you think
Here’s some of your motes from last Thursday
Shot down in their prime over Rome
The boys that can never go home
We’re thrown a hundred yards
Blown into smithereens
Until we meet again my friends
No regrets and Lily Marlene sings again

My name is unimportant
And my job you could call mean
But I like the work and I do it well
That’s enough for me.
I think there was a time when I
Could do, and did, much more.
I have dreams in which I captain the ship
And hear the ocean roar.
I’ve lived alone for all I can remember
That only means some six or seven years.
I would rather be nobody else,
I’m happy as I am.
All I need is in my way
And you see no one expects too much from me.
People cry, but no one asks me to advise them.
They want to know but they don’t ask me how.
That’s for someone else and not for me, I don’t know.
Lucky me.
My friends think that I should be trying
To find out who I was.
But I feel that road would bring me pain
And too much would be lost.
How I am is how I’m meant to be now,
Anyhow there’s things I see more clearly
Than those whose heads are searching in the clouds
to make discoveries,
And maybe fail to see
What’s on the ground beneath their feet, not hard to find.
People cry, but no one asks me to advise them
They want to know but they don’t ask me how,
That’s for someone else and not for me, I don’t know.
Lucky me.
No one asks me to advise them.
They want to know but they don’t ask me how.
That’s for someone else and not for me, I don’t know.
Lucky me – oh.

Thirty odd years before on some grass covered wasteland,
A boy is observed on his own who is watching and playing.
He’s just made a pact with himself,
If that rabbit over there
Doesn’t go down yonder hole,
Let the ground beneath him disappear.
And it runs on past,
Fades away in the distance
But the earth doesn’t move, nobody thought that it would.
He makes bets and pledges again and again.
Sometimes he wins, sometimes he loses, no matter,
Some might call him stupid
To tempt fate in this way,
But he really does believe in it
Each time the rules are made
There he goes again,
‘If I never fall for a lady then Let me famous, let me be wise -‘
Now this one I like,
It has a different ring,
Instead of something trivial
That’s a serious undertaking.
So I say to you,
This time I think I’ll act,
I’ll be a witness to this contract,
I’ll settle everything.
So if you should ever fall in love
You’ll not only not be wise,
You’ll lose your memory and most of your mind
And I’ve never been known to lie…
And now he’s not really sure if he truly heard someone,
So what if he did, he thinks, for nothing will happen,
Though he seems to shrug it off
He won’t play that game again,
Forever morning after the night before
When even one drop would cause pain.
And the years go by.
The incident is all but forgotten by one
But the other who lives it remembers that innocent fun.

(Banks)

For a while I could not lose this childhood spectre,
I felt others saw it too.
Now I notice a change in the way that people look at me,
And how those people look to me.
I see they’re not so clever, I like them better for it too.
And one still more.
For now I see more clearly
Many things that passed me by.
Like Paul the visionary,
I see things in a different light.
For now I know what course to take.

Now at last I find a meaning in scenes of life
That made no sense to me before.
And the complicated structures of scientific knowledge
Once just mad, they seem so simple now.
And one I’ve known since childhood, she has new meaning for me too
These things are good.
For now I see more clearly
Many things that passed me by.
Like Paul the visionary,
I see things in a different light.

(It’s a curious feeling)
It’s a curious feeling to see the edge receding,
It seems the more I know, the more I don’t know,
does this ever end?
If you listened to fanatics of the left or right,
You’d think they’d solve it all,
But they don’t convince me.
Some statesmen, gurus, men of science and of philosophy,
All have an answer but they won’t agree.
So if anybody tells you stories
Of how they’re gonna change your world
Be they the Aga Khan, the ex Shah of Iran,
Or the Man from U.N.C.L.E.,
Say I don’t believe you cos I know we don’t need you.
In the name of religion or of any politician,
I’m sure we’ve heard it all.
If races always ran to form they never would be run,
Where would be the fun?
And if ever a man could understand everything there was,
He’d have no reason to carry on.
So when anybody tells you stories
Of how they’re gonna change your world,
Be they the Aga Khan, the ex Shah of Iran,
Or the Man from U.N.C.L.E.,
Say come with me then to the Garden of Eden.
Put back our bites from the apple of the Tree of Knowledge,
Be like the beasts again.

How strange I never noticed
Your eyes, or the colour of your hair.
It seems to me you grow more beautiful
In every way.
With every single passing day.
Love crept in unseen,
Found me wanting
I didn’t even have the sense to know
What I was missing,
Or what I was soon to feel for
You the laughter,
You a reason to live.
You the object of all the love I can give,
And all that I possess.
You who meant nothing when I was younger
It seems a memory from another life.
Did you ever think we’d meet this way,
Feel this way.
Did you really even care?
Some changes I foresaw,
But not this one.
This feeling I would not have understood.
Strange to think
I might have lived my whole life without
You the laughter,
You a reason to live.
You the object of all the love I can give,
And all that I possess.
You who meant nothing when I was younger.

(Banks)

Too good to last, how those four words ring in my ears.
A voice from the past has been heard again,
Whether its real or not, I can’t say I care
But my memory’s going and my mind is losing its grip.
I’m walking on thinning ice.
Soon I shall be taken down, drowned in blind ignorance.
Its hard to bear but harder still
To tell the one I care for,
Please to say love is here today, but its going away, going away.
How can I fight a fire that comes from inside myself
That threatens a total end.
So much to lose when I still had so much to learn.
Its hard to bear but harder still
To tell the one I care for.
Please to say love is here today, but its going away, going away.
Millions of people won’t know what I mean,
None can appreciate somebody else’s dream.
Thousands of reasons for staying alive
Explode into fragments,
Dissolve into nothing.
As I prepare for the oncoming night.
Already I feel a creeping coldness chilling my bones,
Dulling my sight and mind.
Soon there shall be only sand where once water flowed.
Nature dies and is reborn, but I shan’t weather this coming storm.
Not for me to die with children around my bed
After a happy life,
Though rain will fall and the sun won’t change in its course.
Its hard to bear but harder still
To tell the one I care for,
Please to say love is here today, but it’s going away, going away.
Millions of people won’t know what I mean,
None can appreciate somebody else’s dream.
Thousands of reasons for staying alive
Explode into fragments,
Dissolve into nothing.
As I prepare for the oncoming night.

I feel it leading me
Away to I don’t know where.
I might be back someday,
But the people and things will change
And no one will remember me then.
Don’t need no sympathy,
For soon I’ll forget everything.
I feel it fading now,
And I see in the eyes of my love
Tears for how it might have been.
It sure felt good for a while.
Yes it was good for a while.
I found somebody to take my hand
To the promised land of the loved.
Now as the night draws in,
A dark with no promise of dawn,
I feel my eyes grow dim,
As I see in the eyes of my love
Tears for how it might have been.
It sure felt good for a while.
Yes it was good for a while.
I found somebody to take my hand
To the promised land of the loved.
Yes it was good for a while.
It sure felt good for a while.
I found somebody to take my hand
To the promised land of the loved.

(Banks)

If you know my story now,
Please don’t tell
Don’t want to hear,
It can only bring me pain.
Maybe one day before I die
I’ll open that door,
Maybe I’ll cry,
But for now I’ll live in the Dark.

Now that you don’t know me,
Is it gone forever, past?
Now my rock has crumbled
In the stormy winter blast.
Now the world is darkening
As I watch the farewell train,
Though once she spoke within me –
Strange, may never see you again.

Now the wind is asking:
How a rock so firm can fall.
Then the breeze he murmurs:
She rose not to save death’s call.
Now the leaves are rustling,
Do I hear them speak a name
That waits round every corner –
Strange, may never see you again.

Little girl, lilting lilac,
Autumn Queen, by this quiet brook,
Once you lay, breathing softly –
Now I watch the ashes burn,
A stranger who may not return
Rose with the dawn,
Sailed on the morning tide.
Take this, shining acorn,
Treasure it, through joy and sorrow
When you’re old, tired and lonely,
Open it – a voice will sigh,
A memory that went drifting by
Upon the tide that swept you from my side.

Now the bells are calling,
I must tread the homeward track.
Leave the whispering ripples
For the next part I must act.
Though I gave the whole world,
She remembers not my name.
That star beneath the bright lights –
Strange may never see you again.

Seven long years have gone by,
Scattered on the wind,
Fortunes made and squandered,
Ardour’s beacon growing dim.

Seven long years have now past
Neither glimpse nor word
Of the jewel that vanished
Though the case lay undisturbed.

Seven long years have I spent
Trying to forget,
But no man can banish
Heaven he has sought and met.

Through the trials and the tears
Still I cannot learn,
Ever hopeless dreaming
Perhaps some day you will return.

Dear Friend,
When you are gone,
There’ll always be this song
To remind you of where you once belonged.
Though for you fly way, your face will bless the day.
Safe road through stormy weather, let me hear you say:

The sun will shine again.
New dawns will rise again.
And we’ll be together, till the end.

Oh baby, what am I supposed to do?
Oh baby, when times get rough,
The going’s hard,
I’ll still be here for you.

The sun will shine again.
New dawns will rise again.
And we’ll be together, till the end.

August saw a contest fit for Kings
From far and wide they came to trade their swings
Little grubs with stone-age clubs
And tanners’ sons with foxes gloves
They came to face the stiffest course since Tring

Harold took an eight-iron at the first
Hoped the hedge whilst Tostig chipped and cursed
Sliced into a sticky patch and, playing out,
He’d met his match
When lettuce leaves had made the crowd disperse.

So, we’re all as we lie
We’re all as we’re lying.
No, don’t tell me it’s time,
It’s all in the timing.

Getting wiser, so much wiser, introspected ostraciser,
Drinking up with no holes barred to play.

Daphne lay beside the Silent Pool,
When suddenly the air began to cool
Otto heard it, running back,
And tried to stop the thudding crack
As Luther strode up, crying “Winter Rules”.

“Holy Mackerel”, cried the Papal Prince,
“You’re out of bounds I’m really quite convinced”.
Luther drew his driver but the Pope pulled out a fiver
And they halved the hole on points of sacraments

So, we’re all as we lie
We’re all as we’re lying.
No, don’t tell me it’s time,
It’s all in the timing.

Getting wiser, so much wiser, Seven Sisters sympathiser
Drinking up with no holes left to play.

The hour of confrontation now was nigh
As Plato and Justinian were tied,
Locked in mortal combat firing vulture after wombat
Their supremacy now could not be denied.

The Seventeenth lay waiting for the pair
As both advanced with silent, ashen stares
But there they stood, incredulous,
The distance reading “Nebulous”
And “Best of luck, Buzz Aldrin beat you there”.

So, we’re all as we lie
We’re all as we’re lying.
No, don’t tell me it’s time,
It’s all in the timing.

So, we’re all as we lie
We’re all as we’re lying.
No, don’t tell me it’s time,
Or else I’ll be crying.

I hear the birds come greet me in my morning
They sing the songs of love in tongues of ages past.
And all the while a vision is unfolding,
The Moorhen pipes at me, “don’t sleep the day away”.

And so with cautious steps I tread
A measured path through vale and rook,
And many signs you’d want to take me with you.

And I go down to the Landing.
Heron’s Flood flows on storm-clothed
As the harbour lights guide the wanderers home.

I see the sun come greet me in his dawning,
He holds the seed of life within his aged hands.
And, in the sky, a vast procession streaming,
Royal banners held aloft to mark the halcyon time.

And so I walk in meadows below,
Amongst the springs and weevil-gall,
In myriad throngs the grass will take me with you.

And I climb up to the Hawk’s Throne,
Cragshorn lies at Umbrian
And the marram-slopes span the sapient sky.

I feel the night come bidding me his greeting,
He draws a glowing veil upon a sleepy world.
And in the sky the stars roll through the heavens,
Below, the new-hatched dove stares wondrously above.

And so to Esma I am come
To forge a passageway through time
And all, too soon, you’d come to take me with you.

And I strike north to the veld-plains,
Dorn Ridge melts in snow-gold.
As the Moorhen
Pipes the pinkery moon.

Birdsong, so sweetly, hear them calling you.
Birdsong, so sweetly, hear them calling you.

Every little thing she’s wanted
Every little thing she’s had to get
Every single thing she’s squandered
Every single thing she’s had to let.

Moonshooter, as free as ebbing tide
Moonshooter, no gaping cracks to hide
Some at the windows
Some at the lights –

Carry on shooting your moons…
Maybe we’ll come back soon
Yes we will come back soon.

Florida is where you’ll find her
Lazing in the sticky summer sun
Living in a dying city
Waiting for the travelling troupes to come

Moonshooter, as free as ebbing tide
Moonshooter, no gaping cracks to hide
Some at the windows
Some at the lights –

Carry on shooting your moons…
Maybe we’ll come back soon
Yes we will come back soon.

Moonshooter, as free as ebbing tide
Moonshooter, no gaping cracks to hide
Some at the windows
Some at the lights –

Carry on shooting your moons…
Maybe we’ll come back soon
Yes we will come back soon
Yes I will come back soon

Four thousand monks in a maelstrom
All crying out for release.
Three cheers for old Mother Hailsham
She’s sticking to her beliefs.

A hundred ships took to the high seas
Intent on sailing the world.
They might have known that a rainy sky
Would scatter swine before pearls.

One by One, the Centaur is breaking its chains
And, after all, we’re blood and flesh and pain.
Cover it up high, cover it up low
Cerebus stirring,
Finally learning,
Lamplighters’ torches extinguish
The flames of our fate.

Six sturdy Bold held the Tiber
Across the stakes they did swarm.
And in a chance he was leaving
Throughout his watch he was warning their guards.

I met a man on a spreading kite
Who set his course for the sun.
But when I asked him what he’d found up there
He said he’d just been for fun.

Hour by hour the jigsaw is piecing together
In fear and dread, we wait the final act,
Gathering up high, gathering up low,
See how the earth quakes
Watch as the crust breaks
Beating the air as the hot wind
Comes my way.

A million men marched on Memphis,
To pay respects to their King
But when they came to Fort Lauderville,
They found they all had to sing –
So we’re getting so much wiser, it’s so much fun.

Flashing meteors follows
Comets climb in starling numbers,
And the saucers slip by upon the Milky Way.

Marking time, counting sheep on Venus,
Stranded here on Ether
I couldn’t get me feet into a windbreak today.

Pulling Faces and swapping places
Grab the Bull by the horns
But I still seem to be torn
From the Plough I have
Seen the Earth rise
And the Bear sailed away….

Correlating clusters
Destination undecided
As the Virgan Voice cries, “Proceed to Orion”

Lighting years with Aurora’s Beacon
Banished here for treason
They didn’t give a reason for this sentence in space.

Pulling Faces and swapping places
Grab the Bull by the horns
But still I seem to be torn
From the Pole I have
Seen the Crab rise
And the Fish flew away…

Pulling Faces in empty places
And now at last we’re forewarned
And though the Bull’s lost his horns –
After years of trekking
Through the Starglow,
It’s the End of the Universe.

Regrets, yes I have many
But none so great as spurning your love,
For how sweet, how sweet your love would be
As fierce as fire, as tender as dew.

So let the rain fall
Crashing on me
And blind my eyes
For the love I can’t feel.

Take a sound, don’t you wait, don’t be hurried
Make a sign, don’t be late, don’t you worry now.

Sometimes, I would have you close to me
And take the path that leads to the sea.
In the dark our eyes would meet at last
And on your lips, the words I must flee.

So let the rain fall
Crashing on me
And blind my eyes
For the love I can’t feel.

Take a sound, don’t you wait, don’t be hurried
Make a sign, don’t be late, don’t you worry now.

So let the rain fall
Crashing on me
And blind my eyes
For the love I can’t feel.

Pulling out while the doubts loom above me
Shouting out in the dark for you to love me
Cutting life from the hopes of an outstretched hand

Regrets, our secret cemeteries,
Where loves and loss are silently lain,
The dream is fading faster now,
And soon you’ll slip beyond my recall.

Hear, a West Wind calling,
I hear it calling my name,
Snow, on Greenland falling,
The ice is melting away.

Sitting in a greenhouse painted green,
None to picked and none to be seen:
Standing in a harbour soaking rain,
Why must the sky bring rain back again?

Wake, an angel talking,
She’s asking, “black, white or nun?”
Drake, from Plymouth streaking,
He skinks the galleons with his guns.

Climbing up a creeper chasing flies,
Unzip their wings and look in their eyes:
Standing on a steeple stitching time,
Time to be saved and time to be nine.

Footsteps in a blizzard point the way to go
Heads of marble snowmen,
Miles and miles from home.

Sleeping on an Interstellar Plane

Sitting in a greenhouse painted green
None to be picked and none to be seen
Sleeping on an Interstellar Plane
Will we return to find it again?

Find a way to distinguish patterns
In the thread of the living,
Pick a path through the rough and tumble
Look within without misgiving.
Darkness falls on December,
Gathered in, we recall.

Wait, don’t let it wear you down
Call me, and I’ll be right round, come what
May never wears a frown. So call me –

And we’ll treat the world as on wedding-days
On and on through the Paperchase.

Pitch a ball across a dusky courtyard
See the shadows slink away;
Toss a coin into a feckless fountain
And – brittle hope – it’s your lucky day!
Winter finds us together
Heaven knows our design.

Wait, don’t let it wear you down
Call me, and I’ll be right round, come what
May never wears a frown. So call me –

And we’ll treat the world as on wedding-days
On and on through the Paperchase.

I dreamed I was an Otter
In sheltered leats I lay
They I heard a sound I feared
And then I saw their coats
All smeared in blood
I knew my fate –
Nowhere to hide.

I dreamed I was a Red Stag,
In pastures grazing
And then I heard a hunting-horn
Ringing out its song –
The Song of Death
We know so well
How can I tell?

For I, I am the Sun
I am the Moon
I am the Stars up above
Now what are they doing to my little friends?
I make everything and it all dies in the end.

I dreamed I was a Big Bear,
Bespectacled and brown
And then I saw two shafts of fire
Shooting through the sky –
I heard no more
Save drops of rain,
I cannot explain…

I dreamed I was a Grey Seal,
My clubs for suckling
And then they came with sticks and clubs
And beat away my brains –
I heard no more
Save children’s cries
Helpless to die.

For I, I am the Sun
I am the Moon
I am the Stars up above
Now what are they doing to my little friends?
I make everything and it all dies in the end.

Out at night, I saw a squirrel
Lying in a ditch beneath a great elm tree.
Grey and weak, his tiny eyes revealed
The secret of this vigil strange and free.
Hour after hour he pursued,
Weaker and weaker you grew

Squirrel, friend, I see you lying and there’s
Nothing I can do to bring you back.
Grey and weak, your tiny eyes don’t understand
The strangeness of this pain you feel.
All through the night you will lie,
Each moment death’s hour draws nigh.

Silently, your hooded brothers lay you down
To sleep forever into time.
Peace, at last, has come upon you
As a Mother’s fading whispers to her child.

Hour after hour I pursued,
Though you are gone I will still remember you.

The things I said were true
Of a land nothing planned It’s just happens

To steer clear of her charm
She’s easily annoyed

And a friend of mine
Yes I’m cenain that you
Will influence the rest
She could turn you to stone
You’re suitably impressed

When I feel I’m over reacting
and I’m trying too hard it might
that I need to get out in the country
my friend
There are many ways of seeking my fortune
I don’t really have to lose my mind
on the highway (my) thoughts always racing

There’s surely something to it all

The local radio says sorry time to go
But, I don’t sleep too well. Where are those Southern Belles
Tryn a’ get a telephone line through South Caroline
Your call may bring somebody down from miles around
I’m watching her eyes again. I won’t use no fountain pen.
The lady isn’t here. The message wasn’t clear.
She left an hour ago, screamed from the floor below.
Mother nature never gives in, she wants you to sing
But how can I go on just singing this song
My car’s out of gas again. Hurry home to see my friend
Money won’t help you to win a new look at things
Lovinq can bring you down so you fall
Then why do you still try to get up at all
Your good’n bad side showin through
Problems are a part of you
You must love someone else or face life by yourself
You may expect a call. She’s waiting in the hall
See the garden grows and it grows nobody else knows
And you can wear just any old thing, the show can begin
I’m falling asleep to dream. No more hills to climb it seems
Money won’t help you to win a new look at things
You never give in
So why don’t you sing
But how can I go on just singing this song
My car’s out of gas again
I’ll be home to see my friend

There are many friends that I once knew
who felt the same special thing that I share with you
They’ve growm apart in different ways
I wonder if someone hears as I start to say
Hoping love will last
I’m hoping love will last on and on
Why do I dream love’s labour’s lost
I’m just a face with a name that you soon forgot
but when I’m scared the most, the nightmare ends
then safe and sound I awake in your arms again
hoping love will last
Yes I ‘m hoping love will last on and on
How can I go on alone when your love is all I’ve known
Sometimes we stay many miles away
you know you’re here every minute throughout the day
within my thoughts, so take good care
I only wait for the moments we both can share
hoping love will last I’m hoping love will last on and on

There are many things that I would rather do
Many many places I would rather be
Splendour wings of ambition
Melted by the sun
To the sea of remorse
Graveyard come
Dogs that bark at night are fearful of the moon
Will the sound of children’s joys remain in tune
The same light shines on vineyards
That makes deserts its true
What awaits me if I follow you
All that’s behind me
And I flew this time
Never falling
Since your eyes first touched mine

Till the end of time
We know you’re a daughter of eve
And a friend of mine
Yes I’m certain that you
Will influence the rest
She could turn you to stone
You’re suitably impressed
And so easily led
There just happen to be repercussions
Months ahead

Things they taught you at school
Can sometimes disappear
Why do you disbelieve
The things I said were true
Of a land nothing planned It’s just happens
Girls and boys who shout come out to play
With a queen cold as ice
You’d best take my advice
To steer clear of her charm
She’s easily annoyed
What’s that sound, you turn around
There just happen to be bells
And reindeers drawing a sleigh
There troubled with snow covered peaks
Till the end of time
We know you’re a daughter of eve
And a friend of mine
Yes I’m certain that you
Will influence the rest
She could turn you to stone
You’re suitably impressed
And so easily led
There just happen to be repercussions
Months ahead

Built in the belly of junk by the river, my cabin stands;
Made from the trash I dug off the heap with my own bare hands.
Every night I’m back at the shack, I’m sure no one is there,
I’m putting the aerial up, so I can go out on the air…

On the air
On the air
On the air

Every morning I’m out at dawn with the dwarfs and tramps
For a silent communion lit from above by the sodium lamps.
Everyone I meet on the street acts as if I wasn’t there,
But they’re all going to know who I am, ‘cos I can go out on the air.

On the air
On the air
On the air

Leaving the car down the leafy lane,
Turning out Tarzan for my Jungle Jane.
Anyone at all, from Captain Zero
And his band of superheroes standing by on call.
Oh it’s not easy,
No it’s not easy making real friends…

Don’t give me your steak-reared milkboys, milkboys,
Half alive on empty white noise, white noise,
I’ve got power, I’m proud to be loud, my signal goes out clear,
I want everybody to know that Mozo is here!

On the air
On the air
On the air

D.I.Y., D.I.Y., D.I.Y., D.I.Y.
Don’t tell me what I will do, ‘cos I won’t.
Don’t tell me to believe in you, ‘cos I don’t.
Be on your guard, better hostile and hard, don’t risk affection;
Like flesh to the bone in the no-go zone,
You’re still looking for the Resurrection.
Come up to me with your “What did you say?”
And I’ll tell you, straight in the eye:

D.I.Y., D.I.Y., (etc.)

Everyone wants to be what he not, what he not.
Nobody happy with what he got, what he got.
You function like a dummy with a new ventriloquist,
Do you say nothing yourself?
Hanging like a thriller on the final twist,
Is it true you’re getting stuck on the shelf?
Come up to me with your “What did you say?”
And I’ll tell you, straight in the eye:

D.I.Y., D.I.Y., (etc.)

When things get so big, I don’t trust them at all,
You want some control, you’ve got to keep it small.

D.I.Y., D.I.Y., (etc.)

(J.Gabriel/P.Gabriel)

Walking the street with her naked feet,
So full of rhythm but I can’t find the beat.
Snapping her heels, clicking her toes,
Everybody knows just where she goes.

Fear, Fear, she’s the mother of Violence,
Making me tense to watch the way she breed.
Fear, she’s the mother of Violence,
You know self-defense is all you need.
It’s getting hard to breathe,
It’s getting so hard to believe,
To believe in anything at all.

Mouth all dry, eyes bloodshot,
Data stored on a microdot.
Kicking the cloud with my moccasin shoes,
TV dinner, TV news.

Fear, Fear, she’s the mother of Violence,
Don’t make any sense to watch the way she breed.
Fear, she’s the mother of Violence,
Making me tense to watch the way she feed.
The only way you know she’s there
Is the subtle flavor in the air.
Getting hard to breathe,
Getting hard to believe in anything at all
But Fear.

Saturday is shopping day and I drive my car but there’s no place to park it,
No respect for supermen in the supermarket.
I guess there must be trouble but I’ve not been alerted;
Looking round the store, it was all deserted
And I’m stranded here with my empty basket,
So full of questions but nowhere to ask it.

By the one way out, strange voice shouts,
“Don’t let that good man out!”
“Have a wonderful day in our one-way world,
One way, one day;
Have a wonderful day in our one-way world,
One way, one day;
One-way man, one-way mind, get along with mankind.”

There’s an old man on the floor so I summon my charm,
I say, “Hey scumbag, has there been an alarm?”
He says “Yeah, I been selling off eternal youth,
They all got afraid, ‘cos I’m the living proof.
My name is Einstein, do you know time is a curve?”
I said, “Stop, old man! You’ve got a nerve,
‘cos there’s only one rule that I observe:
Time is money, and money I serve.”

By the one way out, strange voice shouts,
“Don’t let that good man out!”
“Have a wonderful day in our one-way world,
One way, one day;
Have a wonderful day in our one-way world,
One way, one day;
One-way man, one-way mind, get along with mankind.”

Ten coaches roll into the dust, chrome windows turned to rust.
Hang on inside, they know they must, hanging on the green-backed words
“In God We Trust.”
No one knows if the spirit died, all wrapped to go like Kentucky Fried,
Trying to read the flight of birds, low on fuel, getting low on words.

And she comes out like a white shadow,
She comes out like a white shadow.

Each one drawn to empty spaces, outsiders, borderline cases.
It’s hard to tell black from white when you wake up in the middle of the
night.
Weighted down by the absence of sound, broken now by the cry of a hound,
Looking for movement within the haze, light can be deceptive with her rays.

And she comes out like a white shadow,
And she comes out like a white shadow,
She comes out like a white shadow.

(Gabriel)

It’s too late, this model’s out of date.
Got every spare part, but there ain’t much heart inside here.
Not like the start, I was good at the art of survival;
I’ve always tried to keep my feelings deep inside
Where I can hide them, now I’m open wide.

When it ends, again I’ll see my friends,
They’ll give me a lift, I’ve been running adrift, so easy…
Shifting the gear, I’ve got nothing to fear from a showdown,
I’ll go down quiet.
And the kids downstairs making a hell of a din,
I’m all alone, getting a quote for the wages of sin.

Beyond the indigo, indigo,
Where the chilly winds, winds will blow,
My time is running low.
Going to cross the dark, dark river,
Going to see my good life-giver,
Better cover my yellow liver.

All right, I’m giving up the fight,
I didn’t know when I’d be a stranger again in my own land.
The days are okay, but oh, how I hate these long nights.
You understand?
Darling, please just hold my hand.
You feel so warm, in the eye of the storm,
I’m going away, I’m going away, I’m going away.
See you again someday…
Darling, I’m going away.
Feel like I’m going away, this time I’m going away.

(Gabriel)

What did you mean when you opened your mouth and let all our secrets out?
You told him what I was about, my cover was completely blown.
I tell you darling, I’ve been watching the war films
And I’ve got a few ideas of my own,
‘cos after the film had ended, the call for recruits was shown,

And I’ll be joining the professionals, I want to be a man.
With all that animal magic I’ll do anything you can.
I’m joining the professionals ‘cos I want to be a man,
Look! I wave my wand, watch the rabbit disappear…
Join the professionals and learn to fight!

I bet the two of you still laugh at me for being timid as a lamb;
That may be the way I look, but it’s no longer what I am.
I’ve been across to Northern Ireland,
And I came home with a new kind of charge:
I learned how to hunt in the night, I learned about camouflage.

I’ve been joining the professionals, and now that I’m a man
With all that animal magic I’ll match anything you can.
I’m joining the professionals, this time I understand,
Look! I wave my wand, watch the rabbit disappear…
Join the professionals and learn to fight!

Exposure

Space is what I need, it’s what I feed on.

Exposure

Out in the open…

(Gabriel)

Doing nothing, stuck in the mud, just pumping the blood.
The water level’s getting low, something ugly’s going to show.

If only I could touch you, I guess you’d be alarmed.
If only I could touch you, I don’t mean you no harm.

If only I could touch you, like the wind can touch the sail,
If only I could touch you, darling, now that words have failed.
Oh, flotsam still afloat,
Oh, jetsam thrown out of the boat.

Oh love, my love, nothing here is what it seems.
We both know it; Christ, you show it…
Oh, oh my love.

(Gabriel)

I need perspective, ‘cos I’m facing the wall.
I need perspective, ‘cos I’m not that tall.
I need perspective, heard the trumpet call.
Don’t trust my eyes, want to know where things fall.

I need perspective, party time for the newly wed.
I need perspective, colors ran as the images bled.
I need perspective, like confetti on the flower bed.
Don’t trust my eyes, priest crying he’s got fire in his head.

Oh Gaia, if that’s your name,
Treat you like dirt, but I don’t want to blame.
Oh Gaia, the wind heals the fire and blows the ash away.

I need perspective, sitting in a long, long hall.
I need perspective, staring at the white, white wall.
I need perspective, waiting for the phone to call.
Don’t trust my eyes, there’s one thing I’ve got to tell you all.

I need perspective, to see through red, red skies.
I need perspective, to carry merchandise.
I need perspective, I don’t trust my eyes.

Oh Gaia, if that’s your name,
Treat you like dirt, but I don’t want to blame.
Oh Gaia, the wind heals the fire and blows the ash away.

I used to be an industrial giant,
Sitting in a garden full of chemical plants.
Trying very hard to get you off my mind.
Acting like any man, taking you for all I can,
Just the same, the same as all my kind, so blind.

I need perspective.

(Gabriel)

Met this girl called Josephine and took her up on my machine,
We had a little fun, and now we got a little one.
Had to get married, being chased out of town.
Found ourselves a place to live, we put all our money down.

Called it Home Sweet Home, Home Sweet Home,
Eleven floors up in a tower block, happy just to have a home.
I’ve gone and changed the lock on our home.

Nothing really worked out right; things got broke, they stayed that way.
None of our friends came round at night, little Sam got no place to play.
“We’ve got to get out of here, Bill,” she said,
“I’ve been telling you all the while,”
When I came home from work that night,
She’d jumped out the window with our child.

From our Home Sweet Home, Home Sweet Home.
Just a place to take a rest, just a place to make a nest.
We call it home.

When the insurance money came through,
It seemed dirty, didn’t know what to do.
Took out the cash, went down to the casino,
Down on the wheel on a double,
And I won, yes I won, like I never won before.
Bought myself a country house with an antique carved oak door.

It was Home Sweet Home, Home Sweet Home.
Just a place to lay our head, think of all the things we said
About in our Home Sweet Home.

It’s good to be here! How’ve you been?
Check my bags, boy! Where’s my room?
I sit on the phone, that’s my game,
Keep up the pressure all the way!

I don’t want to beat about the bush
but none of us are getting any younger.
There’s people out there who could take your place.
A more commercial view! A fresher face!

I need a shower, take a nap
I’ll meet you in the bar, we must have a rap.
There’s a lot on the line, a lot to say.
There’s something I must tell you today.

You and I both know the score,
you can’t go on like this forever.
So it’s with regret that I tell you now
that from this moment on,
you’re on your own!

I don’t talk round corners, it’s right between the eyes
If you’re slow they’ll run past you,
Stand tall, see them falling over.
I walk a straight line, it’s right between the eyes.
Well show me the door, show me someone who’ll do it better.

The drinks are on me, be my guest.
Smoke a cigar? Take the best.
Don’t hedge your bets, we can make a deal,
you got it in your pocket, how do you feel?

So glad that’s over, now you know,
but I’m only acting under orders.
And looking down on you from way up here.
You’ve got to sink or swim, get off the floor!

I don’t talk round corners, it’s right between the eyes
If you’re slow they’ll run past you,
Stand tall, see them falling over,
I walk a straight line, right between the eyes.
Well show me the door, show me someone who’ll do it better.

The curtains are drawn
Now the fire warms the room.
Meanwhile outside
Wind from the north-east chills the air,
It will soon be snowing out there.

And some there are
Cold, they prepare for a sleepless night.
Maybe this will be their last fight.

But we’re safe in each other’s embrace,
All fears go out as I look on your face –

Better think awhile
Or I may never think again.
If this were the last day of your life, my friend,
Tell me, what do you think you would do then?

Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you,
Make the most of all you still have coming to you, [or]
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you,
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees

Let me live again, let life come find me wanting.
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter.
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me,
Telling me the danger’s past, I need not fear the icy blast again.

Laughter, music and perfume linger here
And there, and there,
Wine flows from flask to glass and mouth,
As it soothes, confusing our doubts.

And soon we feel,
Why do a single thing to-day,
There’s tomorrow sure as I’m here.

So the days they turn into years
And still no tomorrow appears.

Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me,
Telling me the danger’s past, I need not fear the icy blast again.t.

Big Jim Cooley commanded respect, whatever he wanted he could get.
The badge on his waistcoat shone in the sun.
It ain’t no lie that Big Jim was feared by everyone.

In the saloon one evening Big took a bet
with a rancher whose name I forget.
He wanted a herd taken over the plain,
and he called Jim `yellow’, he’ll never do that again.

He got mad!
He threw his badge on the floor and walked out,
he’s gonna give it a try, he left no doubt.

“Must be mad, he must be mad”!
The people wished him well, and good luck.
“Well I don’t need it”! He laughed,
got on his horse and rode away.

Out on the trail, Jim ‘n’ his crew of five
were trying their best to keep the cattle alive.
The weather was hard, but so were the men,
Though I don’t think even Big will try this trip again.

His horses were edgy, sensing trouble ahead,
but the trouble didn’t start until the men were in bed
A-whooping and a-hollering, flashing their knives,
Big and his men were jumped by an all-star Indian tribe.

He was scared, Big Jim was scared
Alive, they called him lucky, but not today.
Cos he died like all good cowboys with his boots on next to his men.

Big Jim, he still won’t lie down,
for him the bet is still on.
Some say he rides there, cursing still.
Some say they’ve seen him.

Lay your body down upon the midnight snow,
Feel the cold of winter in your hair
Here in a world of your own,
In a casing that’s grown
To a children’s delight
That arrived overnight.

And here they come to play their magic games
Carving names upon your frozen hand.
Here in a world of your own,
Like a sleeper whose eyes
Sees the pain with surprise
As it smothers your cries
They’ll never never know.

Hey there’s a Snowman
Hey, Hey what a Snowman
Pray for the Snowman
Ooh, Ooh what a Snowman
They say a snow year’s a good year
Filled with the love of all who lie so deep.

Smiling faces tear your body to the ground
Covered red that only we can see.
Here in a ball that they made
From the snow on the ground,
See it rolling away
Wild eyes to the sky
They’ll never, never know.

Hey there’s a Snowman
Hey what a Snowman
Pray for the Snowman
Ooh, Ooh what a Snowman
They say a snow year’s a good year
Filled with the love of all who lie so deep.

Hey there goes the Snowman
Hey there what a Snowman
Hey there lies the Snowman
Hey he was a Snowman
They say a snow year’s a good year
Filled with the love of all who lie so deep.

The warming sun, the cooling rain,
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze,
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through.
The words of love, the cries of hate,
And the man in the moon who seduced you
Then finally loosed you.

You climbed upon a burning rope to escape the mob below,
But you had put the flaming out so that others could not follow,
To be out of the bounds and the barks of those who do not wish you well.

You must blaze a trail of your own, unknown, alone,
But keep in mind
Don’t live today for tomorrow like you were immortal.
The only survivors on this world of ours are
The warming sun, the cooling rain,
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze,
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through.
The words of love, the cries of hate,
And the man in the moon who seduced you
Then finally loosed you.

You’re old and disillusioned now as you realise at last,
That all all you have accomplished here will have soon all turned to
dust.
You dream of a future after life, well that’s as maybe, I don’t know.
But you can’t take what you left behind, you’re all alone.
So keep in mind
Don’t live today for tomorrow like you were immortal.
The only survivors on this world of ours are
The warming sun, the cooling rain,
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze,
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through.
The words of love, the cries of hate,
And the man in the moon…

Get out of the way fat man. You got something to do
Go fill up your hands till they’re shining up at you.
You gotta get out while there’s gold in the air
It’s falling like water, coming down from the hills.

Go West young man
Earn a dollar a day just like your family said.
You’re rolling your days right on into the night
The head of the line’s going way out of sight.
Go West young man like your family said

All along the wagons
All along the dusty trail.
Seventeen years not over a day
Like children in the wild.
Your mother’s milk still wet on your face
And no one to pray for your safe journey home.

Out beyond the desert
Across the mountains by the fall.
Servants who leave their masters house
Are walking all the way.
The golden fields that beckoned you
Are darkened by the years.

Go West Young Man
If you knew then what you know today
You’d be back where you started a happier man
And leave all the glory to those who have remained.

So Go West Young Man
Go West Young Man, like your family said.

Many too many have stood where I stand
Many more will stand here too,
I think what I find strange is the way you built me up
Then knocked me down again.

The part was fun but now it’s over,
Why can’t I just leave the stage?
Maybe that’s because you securely locked me up
Then threw away the key.

Oh mama,
Please would you find the key.
Oh pretty mama,
Please won’t you let me go free.
I thought I was lucky
I thought that I’d got it made.
How could I be so blind?

You said good-bye on a corner
That I thought led to the straight.
You set me on a firmly laid and simple course
Then removed the road.

Oh mama,
Please help me find my way.
Oh pretty mama,
Please lead me through the next day.
I thought I was lucky
Oh I thought that I’d got it made.
How could I be so blind? Oh no…

Little Nemo rubbed his eyes and got out of bed,
trying hard to piece together a broken dream.
His visions lifelike and full of imagination
it’s strange to think they came from such a tiny head.

Dragons breathing fire, but friendly.
Mushrooms tall as houses.
Giant Nymphs and goblins playing,
scenes from a night’s dream, poor Little Nemo!

Eating all kinds of food so close to bedtime
they always made him have these nightmares, it seemed.

Helped young Washington in the garden,
cut the cherry tree down.
Now we all know that’s not history,
scenes from a night’s dream, poor Little Nemo!

“Nemo, get out of bed!”
“Don’t tell me stories, I don’t want to know!”
“Come on you sleepy head, we’re waiting to go!”

Once he went to the ‘Carnival of Nations’
dancing with the princess through the night.

Found themselves on a moving platform
ten ton weights above them,
seeking audience with King Morpheus.
Scenes from a night’s dream, poor little Nemo!

“Nemo, get out of bed!”
“Don’t tell me stories, I don’t want to know!”
“Come on you sleepy head, we’re waiting to go!”

Say it’s alright Joe,
I need another drink
To blow on the glass so I know I’m alive

Play me a song Joe
To fill the hours till morning
Then never again will I bother you
Ooh, Build myself a tower
No way in no way out.
Then my friends can visit me
Once in a while.

Say it’s alright Joe,
I need some reassurance
You never know what you might find in the night.
Ooh I’m just a busy bee, still alive in my hive,
I’m looking for some other world
To dream out my dreams.

There were Kings who were laughing in the rain
And they told me I’d come here to lead the parade
All the colours were changing, The sky was in ruins
The lights are all shining on me and on you
Oh, Shine on……..

Say it’s alright Joe
The night will soon be over
And nothing and no one will ever know.
Open my eyes Joe
I’d like to see the daylight
The clock on the wall says it’s time to leave.
Never seen the same face twice
Never walked the same way
The little love that I have known
I keep to myself.

If there’s a fire it’s asleep in my bed
I must leave it to burn till it burns itself out
Catch as you can I’m not staying here long
I’ll be coming back early or never at all
Shine on……..

The man steps out in the moonlight
At the sound of a scream from below.
He thinks he is a warrior
So he picks up his sword and goes.

From the mouth of the monster
He rescues the maiden fair.
But we know she’s a demon
Come to lure him to demon’s lair.

Through restless foliage and tall trees he leads
To a house in a clearing, a place in her fear she calls home.

“Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I’ll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like.”

And though his body bids him
To enter in with her,
There was something in her manner
That his mind could not ignore.

Also it is whispered
In the kingdom far and wide,
To beware a little cottage
In the forest in a glade.

For who knows what magic takes place in his world?
So he just thanks her kindly preparing to go on his way.

“Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I’ll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like.

Come to my garden,
Taste the fruits and the spices of love.
You can’t resist me,
I’m the kind that your dreams tell you of.”

“So glad you could make it
We had everything arranged.
So glad you saw fit to pay a call.”

Some men never listen,
And others never learn,
But why this man did as he did
Only he will ever know.

He knew he was walking
Into a waiting trap,
Neatly set up for him
With a bait so richly wrapped.

So he went inside there to take on what he found
But he never escaped them, for who can escape what he desires?

“Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I’ll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like.”

Stay with me,
My love I hope you’ll always be
Right here by my side if ever I need you
Oh my love

In your arms,
I feel so safe and so secure
Everyday is such a perfect day to spend
Alone with you

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year

With the dark,
Oh I see so very clearly now
All my fears are drifting by me so slowly now
Fading away

I can say
The night is long but you are here
Close at hand, oh I’m better for the smile you give
And while I live

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year there will be

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year…

Tu dois te frayer ton propre chemin, inconnu, seul,

Tu as quelque chose à faire

Et me détruis encore.

Oh Maman,
S’il te plait pourrais-tu trouver la clé.
Oh jolie Maman,

Oh Maman,
S’il te plait aide-moi à trouver mon chemin.
Oh Jolie Maman,

Et puis mes amis pourront me rendre visite

brillent………

Oh, dis que tout va bien Joe
La nuit va bientôt être finie
Et rien ni personne ne saura jamais.
Ouvre mes yeux Joe

Tu ne peux me résister,

(Rutherford/Banks/Collins)

Reste avec moi,
Mon amour, j’espère que tu seras toujours

Je vais te suivre, me suivras-tu

Je vais te suivre, me suivras-tu

Je vais te suivre, me suivras-tu

Look, see how the world goes round,
Look, see how the day goes on,
You, it won’t stop to help you
Me, it won’t stop to help me.
All the time a wind is blowing
Where it’s blowing next we don’t know…

Look, some spend their days in slumber,
Look, someone is weary toiling,
Home, be my guest and come back home.
Come, you’ll be better off at home.
All the time someone is dying,
Where he’s dying next we don’t know…

I sit in the sunset
Watching God’s evening,
Receding so gently now
Into the Westlands.
I think I’m at peace now
But of nothing am I certain
Only which way will the wind blow next time?

You, you might never have been saved
Ah, well you might not have been so brave,
Time would have shown the parting waves
And you slipping under Autumn’s gaze
And now I know that nothing is what it ever seems.

I sit in the sunset
Watching God’s evening,
Receding so gently now
Into the Westlands.
I think I’m at peace now
But of nothing am I certain
Only which way will the wind blow next time?

“Rest your head my love;
Rest your tired limbs;
Leave your mind at peace, at peace, at peace,
What are you thinking now?”

“Thinking of a girl
As golden as the sun
She loved me not like you, like you, like you”
“Pray do you love me more?”

“It’s hard to say for sure,
A child, sixteen, was I
Both virgins did we buy, we buy, we buy”
“You loved her more than me”.

“She left me one dark night
She took my heart for free
I’ve seen her not since then, since then, since then,
God if I saw her now.”

“All the World’s a stage,”
A friend of mine, he sometimes said,
And though he tried to show the way,
They only care about his name.

“Love is for the Fool,”
A blind old man, he always said,
But of it’s joys he sometimes spoke
And then it seemed, he could see.

“Life is for the Strong,”
A travelling monk, he told me once
But of the weak, he never spoke
Though their cries beat on his ears.

I stood my gun in hand
The swallow flew to meet his love
And as they touched, I shot him down
But now it’s me that can’t fly.

See, the days grown long
Winter comes upon us
Like a storm at sea.
And the will to live
Seems a little thin sometimes
When those you love are
Lost beneath the snowfall.

“Give and you will live”,
Said a man who lived
In a funny way.
So we share our cup
With the thirsty fawn of life
Who leaves us on the
Highway without water.

Master of Time, take me back through the years.
Master of Time, let me try once again
And I will give more, oh how I’ll try,
And with this, a new life I’ll buy.

Hush! The marsh-duck cries,
Far away, she knows
That her love will be,
And she nestles down,
Sobbing still, she dries her eyes,
Knowing that the world
Will cry the rest out.

Where did beauty go?
Seek it here, there
But it’s slipped away.
And when they come to lay me down,
I will take your memory too,
They’ll know that in my final hour,
I loved you.

Master of Time, take me back through the years.
Master of Time, let me try once again
And I will give more, oh how I’ll try,
And with this, a new life I’ll buy.

Caught in the chaos in the market square
I don’t know what, I don’t know why, but something’s wrong down there
Their bodies twistin’ and turnin’ in a thousand ways
The eyes all rollin’ round and round into a distant gaze
Ah, look at that crowd!

Some are jumping up in the air – say “We’re drowning in a torrent of blood!”
Others going down on their knees, seen a saviour coming out of the mud
Oh Mother! It’s eating out my soul
Destroying law and order, I’m gonna lose control

What can I do to stop this plague, spread by sight alone
Just a glimpse and then a quiver, then they shiver to the bone
Ah, look at them go!

Bunderschaft, you are going daft? Better seal off the castle grounds
“This is Moribund, the Burgermeister, I’m gonna keep this monster down,
Somebody sent the subversive element; going to chase it out of town.”
No-one will tell what all this is about
But I will find out.
(I will find out. I will find out.)

This thing’s really outrageous, I tell you on the level
It’s really so contagious must be the work of the devil
You better go now, pick up the pipers, tell them to play
Seems the music keeps them quiet, there is no other way.
Ah, close the doors!

“We’ve tried potions and waxen dolls, but none of us could find any cures,”
Mother please, is it just a disease, that has them breaking all my laws,
Check if you can disconnect the effect and I’ll go after the cause
No-one will tell what this is all about
But I will find out
I will.

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
[I] just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
“Son,” he said “Grab your things,
I’ve come to take you home.”

To keepin’ silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho’ my life was in a rut
“Till I thought of what I’d say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
“Hey” he said “Grab your things
I’ve come to take you home.”
(Back home.)

When illusion spin her net
I’m never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No on taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don’t need a replacement
I’ll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
“Hey” I said “You can keep my things,
they’ve come to take me home.”

(Gabriel)

Hey, I’m feeling so dirty, you’re looking so clean
All you can give is a spin in your washing machine
I fly off to Rome to my prima bella
She leaves me in the rain with telescopic umbrella
Ooh the pain – Modern love can be a strain

I trusted my Venus was untouched in her shell
But the pearls in her oyster were tacky as hell
For Lady Godiva I came incognito
But her driver had stolen her red hot magneto
Ooh the pain – Modern love can be a strain

I don’t know why they leave me in the lurch
To carry on the search
It’s driving me up the wall
Pity when I have so much passion
Romance is out of fashion
Can’t handle modern love at all

So I worship Diana by the light of the moon
When I pull out my pipe she screams out of tune
In Paris my heart sinks when I see the Mona Lisa
She gives me the wink, then she shows me the freezer
Ooh the pain
Modern love can be a strain

(Gabriel/Hall)

Excuse me
You’re wearing out my joie de vie
Grabbing those good years again
I want to be alone

Excuse me
I’m not the man I used to be
Someone else crept in again
I want to be alone

Excuse me please
I’m looking for Lost Angeles
Soaking up the sin again
I want to be alone
I want to be alone
I want to be alone
I want to be alone

You got the money back, that’s okay
Who needs a Cadillac anyway
I got the medicine, make you see the light
Call me in Alaska if it all turns out right allright

Excuse me please
You’re standing on my memories
Stealing souvenirs again
I want to be alone

Leave me alone
I wanna be alone
I wanna be alone
I wanna be alone
I wanna be alone

You got the money back, that’s okay
Who needs a Cadillac anyway
I got the medicine, to make you see the light
Call me in Alaska, if it all turns out right, allright

(Gabriel)

I saw the man at J.F.K.
He took your ticket yesterday
In the humdrum

I ride tandem with a random
Things don’t run the way I planned them
In the humdrum

Hey Valentina, do you want me to beg?
You got me cooking I’m a hard boiled egg
In the humdrum

Empty my mind – I find it hard to cope
Listen to my heart – don’t need no stethoscope

It seem’ to me that television
She come to cut me a deep incision
In the humdrum

Empty my mind – I find it hard to cope
Listen to my heart – don’t need no stethoscope

Out of woman come the man
Spend the rest of his life gettin back where he can
As a bow, so a dove
As below, so above
From the black hole
Come the tadpole
With the dark soul
In coal she burn, she burn

As I drove into the sun
Didn’t dare look where I had begun
Lost among echoes of things not there
Watching the sound forming shapes in the air
From the white star
Came the bright scar
Our amobea
My little liebe schon

(Gabriel)

We’re character actors from the Tower of Babel
Bewildered, burnt out hardly able
To sit astride the high wire cable
It’s hard to balance, a little unstable.

Through broken eyes and contact lenses
I watched you draw your future tenses
See kisses of flame blow out of your lips
You’re back telling me your Apocalypse.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be strong
When the slowburn sunset come along
You’ve gotta stay the night
I gotta think that you might.

We’ve tried a handful of bills and a handful of pills
We’ve tried making movies from a volume of stills
But the words fell like hailstones,
bouncing at our feet,
Covering our feelings with a frozen sheet.

A chance to move, I take a shot
I get cold – you get hot
We look outside, lyin’ awake
See birds breaking surface on a silent lake.

But don’t get me wrong, I’ll be strong
When I’m back on the Isle of Avalon
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be strong
When the slow burn sunset come along
You’ve got to stay the night
I’ve got to think that you might.

Don’t try to make it easy, it’ll cut you down to size
Darlin’ we’ve got to trust in something
We’re shooting down our skies
shooting down our skies

(Gabriel)

The wine’s all drunk and so am I
Here with the hoi-poloi, don’t ask me why
We’re celebratin’ anticipatin’; end of the year
everybody come, everybody here
– well more or less
Some already in a mess
I guess they’re waiting for the big one.

Wonder why I’m cold. How did I get this far?
Had no money, had no car
I pray the snow goes, be bad if it settles
‘cos I follow my nose and the dried up rose petals
– like the man says,
Sure hope Moses knows his roses
Or we’ll all be waiting for the big one.

Once I was the credit to my credit card
spent what I hadn’t got, wasn’t hard
No trust in judgement no trust in money
Someday I’ll find myself like a bee finding honey
But in the meantime
I’m gonna have me some fun
Waiting for the big one.

One too many, where ego I go too
Looking for the real thing
It don’t come from what I do
No real communication moves out of my face
I’m beginning to think I’m just out of place
Won’t get in too deep, I want to get some sleep
To be ready for the big one
– waiting for the big one

(Gabriel)

“Hey Mac, see you down the Dolce Vita!
“Get back, we don’t have time
‘Cos I hear we’re sending off the heroes
When the yera goes, they’re out of the bay,
Trying to find a way
to make it alive”

“So long,” said four men to their families
“Be strong till we get back home
And if not, take care of all the children
Until then just hope and pray
We’re gonna find a way
to make it alive”

“You guys are crazy!”

They shout and then we leave the harbour.
In doubt, they’re acting weird
And the sea is whipping up a welcome
If hell come we’re all easy prey,
Trying to find a way
to make it alive”

“You guys are crazy!”

The captain’s hand shook for
the guys to get in place
He said, “Let’s look behind your face”.
With each corner covered, they were all around
Waiting for the midnight bell to sound.

“Out of sight,” cried Aeron through his glasses
“Don’t fight” said Gorham’s smile

All the while, his hand was on my shoulder
I was scared of being an easy prey,

Trying to find a way
to make it alive”

(Gabriel)

When the night shows
the signals grow on radios
All the strange things
they come and go, as early warnings
Stranded starfish have no place to hide
still waiting for the swollen Easter tide
There’s no point in direction we cannot
even choose a side.

I took the old track
the hollow shoulder, across the waters
On the tall cliffs
they were getting older, sons and daughters
The jaded underworld was riding high
Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky
and as the nail sunk in the cloud, the rain
was warm and soaked the crowd.

Lord, here comes the flood
We’ll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It’ll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you’re running dry.

When the flood calls
You have no home, you have no walls
In the thunder crash
You’re a thousand minds, within a flash
Don’t be afraid to cry at what you see
The actors gone, there’s only you and me
And if we break before the dawn, they’ll
use up what we used to be.

Lord, here comes the flood
We’ll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It’ll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you’re running dry.

Lord, here comes the flood
We’ll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It’ll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you’re running dry.

Drink up, dreamers, you’re running dry.
