Tracklist

Walking along the Camino Royale
The Mississippi sighs
Soft in the night when the wind starts to rise
And I’m lifted high around the corner
So I spin
Fast as a ride at the fair
Like a snake that flies through the air
When I cry enough i’m fired from a gun
And thrown through the doors
Only the fool learns to get through
Ahead I see candles floating in pails
Each placed upon a chair
Into a tent where they turn round the bend
Through a kitchen leading to a staircase
Now I stop
Seems that I’ve been led astray
There are no new answers today
This road is blocked
Only the fool learns to get through

My lucky number is on a prison door
And it’s found on everything I wear
And I’ve got to get away
From 151
Cell 151
Sharing with me is a man who shot his wife
And I’m afraid to fall asleep at night
Hear me when i cry
I can’t see the sky
Too much time
I left the world behind
And it makes me sad
Thinking about the past feeling bad
I know I’ve been blind
All I need is a space to unwind
But I can’t stay
In 151

(instrumental)

Time improves you or dilutes you
But there is no standing still
If you don’t scream nobody hears you
If you won’t fight then no-one will
When I’m walking
Walking through walls
Walking through walls
You can breathe under water
You will find it hard at first
Getting used to ritual slaughter
Feeling like your head might burst
Bare your teeth and bang your drum
Get up on your legs and start to run
No no no you can’t sit down
No-one’s friend and no-one’s clown
You can’t argue with a mad man
Age of reason’s sinking fast
As your arms become steel girders
Crashing through a sheet of glass
When I’m walking
Walking through walls
Walking
Walking through walls
Bare your teeth and bang your drum
Get up on your legs and start to run
No no no you can’t sit down
No-one’s friend and no-one’s clown
Walking
Walking through walls

A broken heart’s not easy to mend
Why must you break it again
When you lose your prize possession
Look around you’re no exception
Give it away
Your mind is all made up
When you lose your first love
You’ll never feel that way
No-one can take her place
When you lose your self-expression
It’s just time to change direction
Give it away
When you start you’re lovers and friends
But when you part you’re strangers again
Now the time just passes slowly
Time to live for yourself only
You watch the years go by
And she’s no longer there
Then one day you will find
That you no longer care
When you lose your prize possession
Look around you’re no exception
When you lose your self-expression
It’s just time to change direction
There’s no need for more protection

Far in the distance and way up high
Circling slowly beneath the sky
Lone in the air and the world is turning
Looking the eagle straight in the eye
What goes up must come down
And you circle all around
On your own
You’re seeing things in a dream
You learn to swing
Over trees
In the clouds
It’s a breeze
Blowing around
Leaving the ground and you’re feeling weightless
To the sea sparkling in the sun
There’s a beach and it’s time for landing
But it seems that you’ve just begun

(instrumental)

India rubber man
How far can you bend
Way across the sea far and wide
India rubber man
How long can you extend
The more I stretch the more you ask
Illusion has no end
India rubber man
How high can you ascend
Up and up and disappear
I’ll show you with my magic rope
India rubber man
How far will you go
I really have no plans
I work in a medicine show

5/5

Looking out the window
I see the red dust clear
High up on the red rock
Stands the shadow with the spear

The land here is strong
Strong beneath my feet
it feeds on the blood
it feeds on the heat

The rhythm is below me
The rhythm of the heat
The rhythm is around me
The rhythm has control
The rhythm is inside me
The rhythm has my soul

The rhythm of the heat
The rhythm of the heat
The rhythm of the heat
The rhythm of the heat

Drawn across the plainland
To the place that is higher
Drawn into the circle
That dances round the fire
We spit into out hands
And breathe across the palms
Raising them up high
Help open to the sun

Self-conscious, uncertain
I’m showered with the dust
The spirit enter into me
And I submit to trust

Smash the radio
No outside voices here
Smash the watch
Cannot tear the day to shreds
Smash the camera
Cannot steal away the spirits
The rhythm is around me
The rhythm has control
The rhythm is inside me
The rhythm has my soul

(Gabriel)

Thick cloud – steam rising – hissing stone on sweat lodge fire
Around me – buffalo robe – sage in bundle – run on skin
Outside – cold air – stand, wait for rising sun
Red paint – eagle feathers – coyote calling – it has begun
Something moving in – I taste it in my mouth and in my heart
It feels like dying – slow – letting go of life

Medicine man lead me up though town – Indian ground – so far down
Cut up land – each house – a pool – kids wearing water wings – drink in cool
Follow dry river bed – watch Scout and Guides make pow-wow signs
Past Geronimo’s disco – Sit ‘n’ Bull steakhouse – white men dream
A rattle in the old man’s sack say – look at mountain top – keep climbing up
Way above us the desert snow – white wind blow

I hold the line – the line of strength that pulls me through the fear
San Jacinto – I hold the line
San Jacinto – the poison bite and darkness take my sight –
I hold the line
And the tears roll down my swollen cheek – think I’m losing it – getting weaker
I hold the line – I hold the line
San Jacinto – yellow eagle flies down from the sun – from the sun

We will walk – on the land
We will breathe – of the air
We will drink – from the stream
We will live – hold the line
Hold the line – hold the line

(Gabriel)

The time I like is the rush hour, cos I like the rush
The pushing of the people – I like it all so much
Such a mass of motion – do not know where it goes
I move with the movement and … I have the touch

I’m waiting for ignition, I’m looking for a spark
Any chance collision and I light up in the dark
There you stand before me, all that fur and all that hair
Oh, do I dare … I have the touch

Wanting contact
I’m wanting contact
I’m wanting contact with you
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Give me the thing I understand
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Shake those hands, shake those hands

Any social occasion, it’s hello, how do you do
All those introductions, I never miss my cue
So before a question, so before a doubt
My hand moves out and … I have the touch

Wanting contact
I’m wanting contact
I’m wanting contact with you
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Give me the thing I understand
Shake those hands, shake those hands

Pull my chin, stroke my hair, scratch my nose, hug my knees
Try drink, food, cigarette, tension will not ease
I tap my fingers, fold my arms, breathe in deep, cross my legs
Shrug my shoulders, stretch my back – but nothing seems
to please

I need contact
I need contact
Nothing seems to please
I need contact

(Gabriel)

Suffocated by mirrors, stained by dreams
Her honey belly pulls the seams
Curves are still upon the hinge
Pale zeros tinge the tiger skin

Moist as grass, ripe and heavy as the night
The sponge is full, well out of sight
All around the conversations
Icing on the warm flesh cake

Light creeps through her secret tunnels
Sucked into the open spaces
Burning out in sudden flashes
Draining blood from well-fed faces

Desires form in subtle whispers
Flex the muscles in denial
Up and down its pristine cage
So the music, so the trial

Vows of sacrifice, headless chickens
Dance in circles, they the blessed
Man and wife, undressed by all
Their grafted trunks in heat possessed

Even as the soft skins tingle
They mingle with the homeless mother
Who loves the day but lives another
That once was hers

The worried father, long lost lover
Brushes ashes with his broom
Rehearses jokes to fly and hover
Bursting over the bride and groom

And the talk goes on

Memories crash on tireless waves
The lifeguards whom the winter saves

Silence falls the guillotine
All the doors are shut
Nervous hands grip tight the knife
In the darkness, till the cake is cut
Passed around, in little pieces
The body and the flesh
The family and the fishing-net
And another in the mesh

The body and the flesh

(Gabriel)

Shock the monkey to life
Shock the monkey to life

Cover me when I run
Cover me through the fire
Something knocked me out’ the trees
Now I’m on my knees
Cover me, darling please
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don’t you know when you’re going to shock the monkey

Fox the fox
Rat the rat
You can ape the ape
I know about that
There is one thing you must be sure of
I can’t take any more
Darling, don’t you monkey with the monkey
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don’t you know you’re going to shock the monkey

Wheels keep turning
Something’s burning
Don’t like it but I guess I’m learning

Shock! – watch the monkey get hurt, monkey

Cover me, when I sleep
Cover me, when I breathe
You throw your pearls before the swine
Make the monkey blind
Cover me, darling please
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don’t you know you’re going to shock the monkey

Too much at stake
Ground beneath me shake
And the news is breaking

Shock! – watch the monkey get hurt, monkey

Shock the monkey
Shock the monkey
Shock the monkey to life

(Gabriel)

Sat in the corner of the Garden Grill, with plastic flowers
on the window sil
No more miracles, loaves and fishes, been so busy with the
washing of the dishes
Reaction level’s much too high – I can do without the stimuli

I’m living way beyond my ways and means, living in the
zone of the inbetweens
I can see the flashes on the frozen ocean, static charge of
the cold emotion
Watched on by the distant eyes – watched on by the silent
hidden spies

But still the warmth flows through me
And I sense you know me well
No luck, no golden chances
No mitigating circumstances now
It’s only common sense
There are no accidents around here

I am willing – lay your hands on me
I am ready – lay your hands on me
I believe – lay your hands on me, over me

Working in gardens, thornless roses, fat men play with their
garden hoses
Poolside laughter has a cynical bite, sausage speared by the
cocktail satellite
I walk away from from light and sound, down stairways
leading underground

But still the warmth flows through me
And I sense you know me well
It’s only common sense
There are no accidents around here

I am willing – lay your hands on me
I am ready – lay your hands on me
I believe – lay your hands on me, over me
over me

Lay your hands on me
Lay your hands on me
Lay your hands on me, over me

(Gabriel)

6 x 6 – from wall to wall
Shutters on the windows, no light at all
Damp on the floor you got damp on the bed
They’re trying to get you crazy – get you out of your head
They feed you scraps and they feed you lies
To lower your defences – no compromise
Nothing you can do, the day can be long
Your mind is working overtime, your body’s not too strong

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
They put you in a box so you can’t get heard
Let your spirit stay unbroken, may you not be deterred

Hold on, you have gambled with your own life
And you face the night alone
While the builders of the cages
They sleep with bullets, bars and stone
They do not see your road to freedom
That you build with flesh and bone

They take you out – the light burns your eyes
To the talking room – it’s not surprise
Loaded questions from clean white coats
Their eyes are all as hidden as their Hippocratic Oath
They tell you – how to behave, hehave as their guest
You want to resist them, you do your best
They take you to your limits, they take you beyond
For all that they are doing there’s no way to respond

Hold on, hold on
They put you in a box so you can’t get heard
Let your spirit stay unbroken, may you not be deterred

Hold on, you have gambled with your own life
And you face the night alone
While the builders of the cages
They sleep with bullets, bars and stone
They do not see your road to freedom
That you build with flesh and bone

Though you may disappear, you’re not forgotten here
And I will say to you, I will do what I can do

You may disappear, you’re not forgotten here
And I will say to you, I will do what I can do
And I will do what I can do
And I will do what I can do

(Gabriel)

See me a big woman, big woman look how you dance
See me a big woman, big woman caught in a trance

Dancing on the tabletop, covered up with the Easter feast
You’re dancing for the fishermen, from the very large right
to the least
Dancing for the slow release, first the boy and then the beast
Then the beast

Burning, buring with the kiss of life
Burning, buring with the kiss of life

See me, a big woman, big woman so full of life
See me, a big woman, big woman going to be my wife

Watching for the different eyes – they change your face –
they come inside
Watch the spirits laugh and cry, watch them find a place
to hide
Watch the spirits talk in tongues, watch them take you for
a ride

Down at the ocean lies a body in the sand
Big woman sits beside, head in hand
With heat from her skin, and fire from her breath
She blows hard, she slows deep in the mouth of death

Burning, burning with the kiss of life
Burning, burning with the kiss of life
Burning, burning with the kiss of life

“Pop, le son de ce second album de Mike est résolument Pop !! Ouvert par un « Acting very strange » endiablé auquel Stewart Copeland (qui assure les drums avec un certain Pete Phipps) ne doit pas être étranger, ce disque capte tout de suite l’attention par son côté enjoué. D’autres titres tels que « Halfway there » ou « Who’s fooling who » sont amenés sur le même rythme d’enfer et l’on se surprendrait presque à penser que l’on est en train d’écouter un disque de …….. Police.

If I step into the light
And hold it in my hand
Nothing left to see,
Nothing left for me, anyway
I feel the world is slipping
Out of reach (I’m all alone)
It’s a memory
It’s a memory that used to be

In a little while
I know it’ll be too late
Somebody help me, please
Cos you’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange

Oh, you never come here any more
You never even call
To see if I’m alright
Get me through the night
Like you used to do

In a little while
I know it’ll be too late
Now I’m certain
That you’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange

Another lonely day without you, oh
I’m acting very strange without you, oh
Another lonely day without you, oh
I’m acting very strange without you, oh

Oh, the place is getting very hot
I’m afraid to stay
Something’s going on
Something’s very wrong with you and me
If I reach out to touch your face
There’s nothing there to touch
It’s a memory
It’s a memory of you and me

In a little while
I know it’ll be too late
Now I’m certain
That you’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange
You’re acting very strange

I’m acting very strange without you, oh
Another lonely day without you, oh
I’m acting very strange without you, oh
Another lonely day without you, oh

You’re acting very strange…

I’m acting very strange without you, oh…

There’s a light in every window
And it’s shining on your door
It’s put there to remind you
Of what you must answer for
Have you never had this feeling
There’s nothin’ you must hide
No day to remember
No day to recall

Every day is just another day
Every way is just another way
So try to remember
Please try to recall
Why don’t you believe me, oh
Why don’t you believe me, oh

And in a moment’s hesitation
Your defences are down
And your secret is out, it is out

Nightmares keep coming
Your dreams get confused
As you try to remember
The way that you were used
But you’ll have forgotten
You can’t recall
The way that it happened
And the things that you saw

Every face is just another face
Every place is just another place
That haunts you forever,
The day you can’t hide
Why don’t you believe me, oh
Why don’t you believe me, oh

And in a moment’s hesitation
Your defences are down
And your secret is out, is out

Someone points a finger
Someone knows the truth
‘Bout the day you’ve been hiding
The day you were used
But the nightmares keep coming
Your dreams get confused
As you try to remember
As you try to recall
But you know in your heart
Someone will find

That day you remember
That day you can’t hide

That day you remember
That day you can’t hide

Maxine, well have you been?
Maxine, long time no see
Maxine, such a surprise
Maxine, just look out tonight

I hear you been livin’ in Paris
Under an assumed fame
They say that you’ve been married
If not in passion at least in name
Damn you, girl, it still hurts me
No man was ever safe, yeah
Taming the shrew comes easy
If any man knew your taste, Maxine

Maxine, how times have changed
Maxine, well nothing’s the same
Maxine, everything’s gone
Maxine, your home ain’t your own

You suit those European clothes
In a foreign sort of way
You still wear that air of distinction
In your fatefully stunning way
Damn you, girl, it still hurts me
And the years just made it worse
In fact our love is divided
Between the blessed and the cursed, Maxine

Maxine, don’t bring back the past
Maxine, life is too fast
Maxine, oh everything’s changed
Maxine, nothing’s the same
Maxine, Maxine

I do remember, do you remember
I still remember, do you remember
I still remember, do you still –

Maxine…

(Rutherford/Palmer)

Oh, I think I know the story
I’ve been hiding it for so long
Are you running away?
Cos I’m in love with you
There’s nothing you can do
I’m in love with you

Why when we get halfway there
Why when we get halfway started
Why when we get halfway there
Do I feel it’s so half-hearted?

(Make up your mind) making up your mind
(Better decide) you better decide this time
How can you call this loving?
You know it’s all or nothing

I’m not afraid to tell the truth
I’ve been hiding it for so long
Oh, I think you already know
That I’m in love with you, with you

Why when we get halfway there
Why when we get halfway started
Why when we get halfway there
Do I feel it’s so half-hearted?

(Make up your mind) making up your mind
(Better decide) you better decide this time
How can you call this loving?
You know it’s all or nothing

Why when we get halfway there
Why when we get halfway started
Why when we get halfway there
Do I feel it’s so half-hearted?

(Give me a sign) why don’t you give me?
(Give me a line) why don’t you believe me?
How can you call this loving?
You know it’s all or nothing
Why when we get halfway there
Why when we get halfway there

(Make up your mind) making up your mind
(Better decide) you better decide this time
How can you call this loving?
You know it’s all or nothing

(Make up your mind) why did you do it?
(Better decide) why can’t you believe it?
How can you call this loving?
You know it’s all or nothing…

They think they know me
But they couldn’t be more wrong
They’re not hearing what I’m singing
When I sing my song
They say I’m aimless
They don’t know I’ve got a plan
Mystified by me
They don’t understand

They tried out pocket-book psychology
They’d better think again
When they try sussing me

Who is fooling who
Who is fooling, who is fooling
Who is fooling, who is fooling who

They think they know me
But they couldn’t be more wrong
They’re not listening what I’m singing
When I’m singing out this song
Well they think they know me
But they haven’t got a clue
I’m the one who knows
Who is fooling who

They think I’m an open book
But they can’t see
They’re in the darkroom
When it comes to reading me

Who is fooling who
Who is fooling, who is fooling
Who is fooling, who is fooling who

You think you’re with me
But you couldn’t be more wrong
They’re not following me closely
But they only trail along
Who do you think is fooling who
It could be me who’s fooling you, hey hey

Who’s been fooling who
Who’s been fooling who

I won’t say you’re lacking
But you just have no idea
You’re not hearing what I’m singing
Though I’m singing loud and clear
You’ll never make it
As a player in my band
We can’t have that
Oh no, who is fooling who

You think I’m no good
But there’s nothing I can do
Think again
I know who is fooling who

I am the one who knows
Who is fooling who, oh
Think once again, I know
Who is fooling who, oh

Who is fooling who

I am the one who knows
Who is fooling who, oh
Think once again, I know
Who is fooling who, oh

Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
They are all protesting, you’re luckier than the rest

You were the last one, to find out what you want
While all your friends went, chasing their careers
They called you crazy and said you’d never make it
They all moved out to their suburbia that year
Life is so good, no one else could see it
It never stopped you from hawkin’ it around

You knew you had it, long before they found it
Everywhere the doors slammed, everybody turned you down (but)

Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
They are all protesting, it’s only luck at best

Now fame has hit you, old friends keep on calling
And all the slamming doors are taken off the hinge
They all remember the encouragement they gave you
You have to turn each time and try to hide a grin
It’s good to be there, they said you’d never make it
That satisfaction’s feeling good to know

You knew you had it, long before they found it
Everywhere the doors slammed, everybody turned you down (but)

Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
They are all protesting, you’re luckier than the rest

Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
Couldn’t get arrested
You’re luckier than the rest
Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
Couldn’t get arrested
You’re luckier than the rest
Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had

Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
Couldn’t get arrested
You’re luckier than the rest
Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested
You keep on investing
You’re luckier than the rest
Couldn’t get arrested, couldn’t get arrested

I suppose you think I’m crazy
I suppose you think I’m mad
You will never understand
Why I’m alone, oh I’m alone, but I

Such a lot of information
Such a lot of useless talk
And there is no way to avoid it
So I’m alone, oh I’m alone, but I

I don’t think I wanna know…

I don’t think I wanna know
And I don’t think I wanna know

Ask all the questions
Answer all the lies
Many men have told me
That you wouldn’t be surprised
I’m so alone, I’m so alone, but I

I don’t think I wanna know…

I don’t think I wanna know
I don’t need this information
Information…

But I think I’ll find an answer
If you’ll just give me the chance
There are people in the world today
Who won’t even question that
They don’t need this information

And now I’m asking you, the only way I know
And you are telling me you cannot keep control
If you think of me
If you think of me the way I am
If you think of me and what I mean
If you think of me the way I ask you now

I don’t think I wanna know…

I don’t wanna be another fool…

(Rutherford)

When the day is weary
All the things that we have said
Take on a different meaning
Now the world has gone to bed
I need to feel you near me
Put your arms around me now
And we will stay together
Watch the world go by somehow

It’s a dream I thought we might have had
But it’s too late, I’m losing you

Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes up again
I will hideaway, till your love comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free
You never, oh never know

When the streets are empty
Not a soul is to be found
And the wind around us
Covers every other sound
As you turn the corner
See my light up on the hill
All I’ll ever ask you
Is you’ll stay with me until

It’s a dream I thought we might have had
But it’s too late, I’m losing you

Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes back to me
Hideaway, till your love comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free
You never, oh never know
Until darling, nothing left to show

Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes up again
Until somebody, hideaway
And your love comes back, comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free
Until somebody, yeah, oh never know
‘Til darling…

Après l’énorme succès commercial de Face Value, et après l’enregistrement de la tournée Abacab avec Genesis, Philou récidive avec Hello I must be going… même ambiance, même qualité, rien à jetter.

Well you can tell ev’ryone I’m a down disgrace
Drag my name all over the place.
I don’t care anymore.
You can tell ev’rybody ’bout the state I’m in
You won’t catch me crying ‘cos I just can’t win.
I don’t care anymore I don’t care anymore

I don’t care what you say
I don’t play the same games you play.

‘Cos I’ve been talking to the people that you call your friends
And it seems to me there’s a means to and end.
They don’t care anymore.
And as for me I can sit here and bide my time
I got nothing to lose if I speak my mind.
I don’t care anymore I don’t care no more

I don’t care what you say
We never played by the same rules anyway.

I won’t be there anymore
Get out of my way
Let me by
I got better things to do with my time
I don’t care anymore I don’t care anymore
I don’t care anymore I don’t care anymore

Well, I don’t care now what you say
‘Cos ev’ry day I’m feeling fine with myself
And I don’t care now what you say
Hey I’ll do alright by myself
‘Cos I know.

‘Cos I remember all the times I tried so hard
And you laughed in my face ‘cos you held all the cards.
I don’t care anymore.
And I really ain’t bothered what you think of me
‘Cos all I want of you is just a let me be.
I don’t care anymore D’you hear? I don’t care no more

I don’t care what you say
I never did believe you much anyway.

I won’t be there no more
So get out of my way.
Let me by
I got better things to do with my time
I don’t care anymore
D’you hear? I don’t care anymore
I don’t care no more
You listening? I don’t care no more
No more!

You know I don’t care no more!

(Collins)

When I opened your letter yesterday
I could not believe my eyes
‘Cos I’ve already given all I have to give
And I think it must have slipped your mind
But I remember not so long ago
I gave it all, it’s gone
And I gave it all to you
Now I’m living on borrowed time, but it’s mine

Oh, d’you hear me?
I cannot believe it’s true
Are you really doing the things you do.
No I cannot believe it’s you, really you

Oh these people I’m talking to don’t understand
They don’t seem to realize
They’re listening but they’re not hearing me
They’re being too cruel to be kind
Any kind of feeling that I had is gone
‘Cos I gave it all, it’s gone
And I gave it all to you
Now I’m living on borrowed time, but it’s mine

Oh, d’you hear me?
I cannot believe it’s true
Are you really doing the things you do.
No I cannot believe it’s you, really you

Over and over I keep on telling myself
Over and over I hope I’m gonna make up
Over and over I know it’s really happening
And there’s nothing that I can say
‘Cos nothing can change all the things that you’ve done to me
Nothing can make me stay

Oh, ‘cos you know I cannot believe it’s true
Are you really doing the things you do
No I cannot believe it’s you, really you

I know it’s a crying shame, it’s all the same to you
It seems all so well laid out but I cannot get through
Never meant it to show
It started happening, that’s all you know.

Oh, I gave it all to you
Now I’m living on borrowed time, but it’s mine

Oh, d’you hear me?
I cannot believe it’s true
Are you really doing the things you do
No I cannot believe it’s you, really you

Over and over I keep on telling myself
Over and over I Hope I’m gonna make up
But over and over I know it’s really happening
And there’s nothing that I can say
‘Cos nothing can change all the things that you do to me
Nothing can make me stay

‘Cos you know I cannot believe it’s true
Are you really doing the things you do
No I cannot believe it’s you, really you

My mom and daddy both say
I must be crazy to be this infatuated
But I know you know
We got something special never felt before
You get me going just looking at you
And the feeling’s not hard to recognise so
Alright I’ll come out in the open with it
Will you walk out with me.

Cos you’re the first girl I’ve ever loved
Tell me do you feel the same way
Well I’ll show you I’m not like all the rest
Cos I know who I am

Your skin is smooth as silk and your eyes like stars
You’re just like a picture book standing there
But I can’t go on
No, I can’t go on thinking you don’t feel the same way that I do

I’ll be so careful I’ll hold you like china
I’ll promise not to hurt you I’ll hold you like china
You won’t feel nothing, I’ll hold you like china
‘Cos I know it’s your first time

Your mum and dad don’t like me
And they tell me every time I call around to see you
I don’t know why
Cos I always straighten my tie and comb my hair
I know your brother thinks that
I’m a limp wristed wimp from the other side of town
I know he’s got me wrong
Because I’m really not like that, I’ll tell you why

You’re the first girl I’ve ever loved
Tell me do you feel the same way
Well I’ll show you I’m not like all the rest
‘Cos I know who I am

I remember the very first time I held your hand
And that was the last time you were so close to me
But I can’t go on
No, I can’t go on thinking you don’t feel the same way as I do

I’ll be so careful I’ll hold you like china
I’ll promise not to hurt you I’ll hold you like china
You won’t feel nothing, I’ll hold you like china
‘Cos I know it’s your first time

I know you know and now I want to, I want to tell everybody
I know you know and now I want them all to see…

(Collins)

You said you would, you didn’t and I wanna know why
And don’t make no excuses
You promised, you promised, you better explain
Tho’ I don’t know what the use is
You said you could, you couldn’t, now why did you lie
You made it look so easy
You did it, why do it, what was your point?
Laughing while you tease me

Oh, do you know and do you care?

I said I did, I shouldn’t cos the magic will go
It happened once before
You’ll see it, you’ll steal it and take it away
And then come back for more
Don’t say you weren’t, you were ‘cos I saw you myself
It’s too late for your reason
You’re lying, you’re lying, you’ve done it this time
I’m sick of all the cheating

Oh, well do you know and do you care?

‘Cos I watch you
oo every day I watch you pass me by
I’ll get you
Yes in the end I’ll get you
Just watch me try

Oh you make it hard to be hard but I’m trying my best
Cos down inside I’m burnin’
You want it, you get it, now take it and run
I’ll hide how much it’s hurtin’

Oh, well do you know and do you care?
Oh, well do you know and do you care?

(Holland/Dozier/Holland)

I need love, love
ooh, ease my mind
And I need to find time
someone to call mine;

My mama said
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
But it’s a game of give and take
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
Just trust in a good time
No matter how long it takes

How many heartaches must I stand
Before I find the love to let me live again
Right now the only thing that keeps me hanging on
when I feel my strength, ooh, it’s almost gone

I remember mama said
You can’t hurry love
No you’ll just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
It’s a game of give and take
How long must I wait
How muck more must I take
Before loneliness
Will cause my heart, heart to break?

No, I cant bear to live my life alone
I grow impatient for a love to call my own
But when I feel that I, I can’t go on
Well these precious words keep me hanging on

I remember mama said
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
Well, it’s a game of give and take
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
Just trust in a good time
No matter how long it takes, now break!

Now love, love don’t come easy
But I keep on waiting
Anticipating for that soft voice
To talk to me at night
For some tender arms
hold me tight
I keep waiting
Ooh, till that day
But it ain’t easy (Love don’t come easy)
No, you know it ain’t easy

My mama said
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
It’s a game of give and take…

(Collins)

Well it don’t matter to me what you say, what you say
And it don’t matter to me what you’re doing alright, alright.

Because I’ve heard it all so many times before
Just what you’re saying and
I don’t really want to hear it all no more, no more
Don’t wanna hear it no more

Cos there’s no way that you can run
Cos I’m gonna find you
And there’s nobody that you can turn to
cos I’ll be behind you just to remind you

That it don’t matter to me what you say, what you say
Well it didn’t matter to me what you’re doing alright, alright

It seems to me it’s been too easy for you for too long
So you’d better climb down before you fall and hurt your pride, your pride
You’re gonna hurt your pride

Cos there’ nowhere that you can run to
Cos I’m gonna find you
And there’s no place that you can stay
Cos I’ll be behind you just to remind you

Well it don’t matter to me what you do
Well it don’t matter to me, I’m talking to you, talking to you
Well it don’t matter to me believe me
Well it don’t matter to me…

(Collins)

I can hear thru’ these walls
I can hear it when they’re foolin’ around
I can hear thru’ these walls
And I hear ev’ry sign, ev’ry sound
I can hear thru’ these walls
In the dark with the shades pulled down

Ev’ry word that they say
Ev’ry noise they make feels it’s coming my way

My fav’rite moment
Putting the glass up next to the wall
Imagination
Tho’ I see nothing, I hear it all
Putting my sign up
Do not disturb me, speak or shout, inside out
Oh mind my clothes, they’re all laid out

I can see thru’ my windows
I can see the girls and the boys
I can see thru’ my windows
And I can imagine the noise
I can see thru’ my windows
I can see them playing with toys

Oh I hope it won’t end
If I promise not to touch, just be a friend

Life is so lonely
I don’t get high off just being me
I like pretending
Wanting to touch them, wanting to see
It’s only normal
Creeping behind you, now don’t shout, ‘cos it’s alright
They keep the windows locked and the door shut tight

Oo I’m feeling like I’m locked in a cage
No way in, no way out, and it gets so lonely
Am I really asking a lot
Just to reach out and touch somebody
‘Cos when I look thru’ my windows or open my door
I can feel it all around me

I can hear thru’ these walls
I can hear it when they’re foolin’ around
I can hear thru’ these walls
And I hear ev’ry sight, ev’ry sound
I can hear thru’ these walls
In the dark with the shades pulled down

Ev’ry word that they say
Ev’ry noise they make feels it’s coming my way

Ah yeah…

(Collins)

You were lonely and you needed a friend
And he was there at the right time with the right smile
Just a shoulder to lean on
Someone to tell you it’ll all work out alright

Don’t let him steal your heart away
No, don’t let him steal your heart away
Don’t let him steal your heart away
No, don’t let him steal your heart away

You can look at him the way you did me
And hold him close say you’re never letting go
But any fool can see you’re fooling yourself
But you ain’t fooling me

So don’t let him steal your heart away
No, don’t let him steal your heart away

And don’t pack my suitcase, I’ll be back
And don’t take my pictures off a’ the wall
Oh, did you hear me?
Don’t let him change a thing ‘cos I’ll be back
Jus tell him to pack his things and get out of your life
And just give me one more chance
I’ll show you I’m right, I’m right

‘Cos I’ve been thinking and I know it was me leaving you lonely
But hoping you could be strong
But could you look at me straight
Tell me what else can I do but say I was wrong?

So don’t let him steal your heart away
No, don’t let him steal your heart away

Well he’s gonna try to make it work for you
Make you think your whole life’s been leading to this
But whatever you do
Think about me and don’t be fooled by his kiss

And don’t let him steal your heart away
Please, don’t let him steal your heart away

And don’t pack my suitcase, I’ll be back
And don’t take my pictures off a’ your wall
Oh, did you hear me?
Don’t let him change a thing ‘cos I’ll be back
Jus tell him to pack his things and get out of your life
And just give me one more chance
I’ll show you I’m right
You know I’m right

You were lonely and you needed a friend
And he was there at the right time with the right smile
Just a shoulder to lean on
Someone to say don’t you worry it’ll all be alright
But he’s no good for you
He’ll make you think your whole life’s been leading to this
And whatever you do
Think about me, oh, and don’t be fooled by his kiss

Why can’t it wait ’til morning?
We can talk about it then
‘Cos I’ve had a drink too many
And my troubles, well I ain’t got any

Why can’t it wait ’til daylight?
Things will seem much clearer then
I’m tired and my eyes are weary
And I just want you lying here with me

So close your eyes
I’ll make it oh, so nice

Well I don’t wanna think about what we’ve said
And I don’t wanna know why we hurt ourselves
‘Cos I just wanna hold you so close to me
It’ll take care of itself and I wanna sleep

So why can’t it wait ’til next time?
‘Cos that time may never come
Stay here with your arms around me
You’re going nowhere without me

So close your eyes
I’ll make it oh, so nice for you

It/Watcher of the skies). Me and Virgil pourtant indispensable !). A noter que la “troisième” face contient le Medley In the cage/Cinema Show/Slippermen/Afterglow

Seul “Funny feeling” peut évoquer “The show”.

Tracklist

Hope I don’t wake in the morning
Find you running right away
Every hour I’m down and worried
Dream about it night and day
To many places you can go
When drowning in your sleep
But no one wants to lie awake
For hours counting sheep
I’m fine what about you
OK tell me the news
We all know how to fight
When there’s something to lose
In my mind l feel elation
For many days
I know you’ll go
Surrounded by four walls
And by yourself you’ll stay inside
Behind your own front door
Well I need to be on my way
Hope to get through another day
Well you know what shape I’m in
And it seems I can never win

Don’t want a picture
To pin upon my wall
Just want someone to
Help me forget that’s all
I don’t want to be here on my own
Hungry as a dog without a bone
Don’t want a postcard
Showing some distant view
Just want someone to
Laugh when I blow a fuse
And I don’t want to be alone
I don’t want to cry and moan
Nobody can hear a single word I say
As I walk the floor
Seems there’s nothing more
Time to go to sleep once more
But in my dreams there’s a place
Where it’s never too late
I see nothing has changed
And that’s where you still remain

Your face is like angel
But what if you won’t let me touch you
You can change into a dragon
But what if your flume is imagined
Feel like I’m lying on a bed of nails
You’re taking the wind right out of my sails
Can’t let go
I never hear you saying
I’m giving you all of my loving
I’m sure you’ve got a reason
But one day you know I’ll get even
Yes I’m getting tired
Playing diplomat
Why is she always taking
The shirt off my back

Hey it’s no surprise that you are going tonight
Well alright
Had a funny feeling
I don’t want to go on wasting your time
Well alright
Had a funny feeling
That came the whole morning through
It’s not hard to do
I’m just not getting through
Don’t live a lie
I’d rather say goodbye
Please don’t explain
No use pretending it’s the same
You don’t have to tell me I’ve known it all day
Well alright
Had a funny feeling
I don’t see a happy ending coming our way
Well alright
Had a funny feeling

(instrumental)

Beneath the scattered light
Across bare hills of night
I dreamt a train just missed me
Another came in sight
I ran across the track
Then had to turn right back
A new one came straight at me
The next behind my back
Nowhere else to turn to
There’re walls on either side
Why must the embankment be so high
Beside myself with weakness
And faint from running wild
I could hear the sound of
Burning coal
They never seem to stop
But always get to smoke
Right out between two tunnels
I ran until I woke

I’m not on the ball
Living in a world of so much change
Thought that I might be much stronger
When I’m far away from you
What I’d give to learn to
Turn back time
Sometimes words are dancing
Like caterpillars moving on a page
I would send you all my letters
Feels like living in a cage
What I’d give to learn to
Turn back time
Your love is bound to see me through
Your warmth is bound to find a way
Your touch is all I really need
Your smile the one and only key

Look up on the wall, there on the floor,
Under the pillow, behind the door.
There’s a crack in the mirror.
Somewhere there’s a hole in a window-pane.
Do you think I’m to blame?
Tell me do you think I’m to blame?

(When they do it) you’re never there.
(When they show it) you stop and stare.
(Abacab) He’s in anywhere.
(Abacab)

If you’re wrapping up the world
‘Cos you’ve taken someone elses girl,
When they turn on the pillow,
Even when they answer the telephone,
Don’t you think that by now,
Tell me, don’t you think that by now.

(When they do it) you’re never there.
(When they show it) you stop and stare.
(Abacab) He’s in anywhere.
(Abacab) Doesn’t really care.

you want it, you got it, you gotta go
you want it, you got it, now you know

It’s an illusion, It’s a game,
Or reflection of someone else’s name.
When you wake in the morning,
Wake and find you’re covered in cellophane.

Well, there’s a hole in there somewhere.
Yeah, there’s a hole in there somewhere.
Baby, there’s a hole in there somewhere.
Now there’s a hole in there somewhere.

(When they do it) you’re never there.
(When they show it) you stop and stare.
(Abacab) he’s in anywhere.
(Abacab)

Talk to me, you never talk to me.
Ooh, it seems that I can speak.
But I can hear my voice shouting out.
But there’s no reply at all.

Look at me, you never look at me,
Ooh, I’ve been sitting, staring, seems so long.
But you’re looking through me
Like I wasn’t here at all.
No reply, there’s no reply at all.

Dance with me, you never dance with me.
Ooh, it seems that I can move,
I’m close to you, close as I can get.

Yet there’s no reply at all,
There’s no reply at all.

I get the feeling you’re tryin’ to tell me,
Is there something that I should know?
What excuse are you tryin’ to sell me?
Should I be reading stop or go, I don’t know.

Be with me, seems you’re never here with me,
Ooh, I’ve been trying to get over there.
Ah, but it’s out of my reach.
And there’s no reply at all.
There’s no reply at all.

I get the feeling you’re trying to tell me;
Is there something that I should know?
What excuse are you trying to sell me?
Should I be reading stop or go, I don’t know.

Maybe deep down inside,
I’m trying for no one else but me.
Too stubborn to say, “The buck stops here.
It’s not the one you’re looking for.”
But, maybe deep down inside,
I’m lying to no one else but me.
Oh but my back is up.
I’m on my guard – with all the exits sealed.

Listen to me, you never listen to me,
Ooh, and it seems there’s no way out,
I’ve been trying, but we cannot connect,
And there’s no reply at all,
There’s no reply at all,
There’s no reply at all,
No reply at all.

Is anybody listening – oh oh,
No reply at all…

The fires are burning in another land,
Don’t start counting, don’t start counting.
Colder and colder, the ice is moving closer
And it gets me down.
Going round and round and down the same old track.

Pack on my back, going swiftly nowhere,
Heart in my ear beating like a drum.
Where will you go?

All by yourself.
(Hah, hah, hah, hah, hah, hah.)

And now I’m standing on the corner.
Waiting in the rain,
But then in sunlight without warning,
I invent a name,
Me and Sarah Jane,
We had a special thing going,
Me and Sarah Jane.

It was a time of love and laughter,
It wouldn’t come again,
We had our round of joy but after,
Then began the pain,
Me and Sarah Jane.
We had a special thing going,
Me and Sarah Jane,
Sarah Jane.

Searching for a clue.
Traces on the sand.
First I’m flying, going round round round,
Then I’m sliding going down down down,
Doesn’t matter where I start I always end up
Falling through those same old crowded rooms.

Me and Sarah Jane,
We had it coming
All the pain,
Walking down the streets,
And finding nothing is the same,
And now the city lights are dimming one by one,
It costs too much money to keep them all on.

Me and Sarah Jane,
In silence walk along the shore,
Tears of joy and mocking laughter,
Words lost in the wind.
The tide was rising,
But there we stayed,
We had no fear of dying
We weren’t afraid.

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

Found that man reported missing,
He wandered in his home.
It don’t seem to bad if you consider
Just what he’s been through.

Seems he met up with a gang of thieves,
Who mistook him for a man of means,
They locked him up then found he had no money,
So they let him go again.
Now he’s back at home and happy
Just to see the kids.

I wish that I could really tell you
All the things that happened to me
And all that I have seen.
A world full of people their hearts full of joy,
Cities of light with no fear of war,
And thousands of creatures with happier lives,
And dreams of a future with meaning and no need to hide.

Oh, keep it dark.

It seems strange to have to lie,
About a world so bright.
And tell instead a made-up story,
From the world of night.

I wish, that I could really tell you,
All the things that happened to me
And all that I have seen,
A world full of people their hearts full of joy,
Cities of light with no fear of war,
And thousands of creatures with happier lives,
And dreams of a future with meaning and no need to lie,
No need to hate,
No need to hide.

Oh, keep it dark.

Too big to fly, dodo ugly so dodo must die,
Doggo with fear on its side, can’t change, can’t change the tide.
Dog baiter, agitator, asking questions, says he wants to know why.
Ain’t no reason that money can’t buy.
Mink he pretty so mink he must die, must die, must die.

Sun he giving life in his light,
Part of the system,
Friend to man, friend to the trees,
No friend to the snowman.
Where does he go, what does he do?
Does he meet with the mole, the stream, the cloud
And end up at the bottom of the sea.

Fish he got a hook in his throat,
Fish he got problems
Where does he go, what does he do?
Does he hope he’s too small, to poor a haul,
Who’ll end up being thrown back in the sea.
I’m back in the sea.

Caretaker, horror movie,
Only one eye, only needs one boot,
Sweet lady, she knows she looks good
Vacuum coming for the bright and the brute.

Big noise, black smoke
So pig-headed couldn’t see the joke.
But it ain’t funny
Ask the fly on the wall
It’s only living
It don’t matter at all, at all, at all.

Pimp, he make you drool and grunt,
He got an answer.
One he got a dream of love,
Deep as the ocean.

Where does he go?
What does he do?
Will the siren team with Davy Jones,
And trap him at the bottom of the sea?

I’m back in the sea.
I’m back in the sea.
I’m back in the sea.

Lurker (Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

Meanwhile lurking by a stone in the mud
Two eyes looked to see what I was and
Then something spoke and this is what
It said to me…….

Clothes of brass and hair of brown
Seldom need to breathe
Don’t need no wings to fly
Ooh and a heart of stone
And a fear of fire and water
Who am I?

Clothes of brass and hair of brown
Seldom need to breathe
Don’t need no wings to fly
And a heart of stone
And a fear of fire and water
Who am I?

Was it you or was it me?
Or was it he or she?
Was it A or was it B?
Or was it X or Z?

Was it you or was it me?
Or was it he or she?
Was it A or was it B?
Or was it X or Z?

Was it you or was it me?
Or was it he or she?
Was it A or was it B?
Or was it X or Z?

Was it you or was it me?
Or was it he or she?
Who dunnit?

I didn’t, I, I didn’t do it….

Oh but we know, we know, we know…

So was it you or was it me?
Or was it he or she?
Was it A or was it B?
Or was it X or Z?

Was it you or was it me?
Or was it he or she?
Was it A or was it B?
Or was it X or Z?

Was it you or was it me?
Or was it he or she?
Was it A or was it B?
Or was it X or Z?

Was it you or was it me?
Or was it he or she?
Was it you or was it me?
Who dunnit?

I, I, I didn’t, I didn’t do it…

But we know, we know, we know…
Yeah we don’t know, we don’t know, we don’t know…
We all know, we all know, we all know…

See the lonely man there on the corner,
What he’s waiting for, I don’t know,
But he waits everyday now.
He’s just waiting for something to show.

And nobody knows him,
And nobody cares,
‘Cos there’s no hiding place,
There’s no hiding place – for you.

Looking everywhere at no one,
He sees everything and nothing at all – oh.
When he shouts nobody listens,
Where he leads no one will go – oh.

He’s a lonely man, there on the corner,
What he’s waiting for, I don’t know,
But he waits everyday now.
He’s just waiting for something to show – oh.

Nobody knows him,
And nobody cares,
‘Cos there’s no hiding place,
There’s no hiding place – for you and me.

Are we just like all the rest,
We’re looking too hard for something he’s got
Or moving too fast to rest.
But like a monkey on your back you need it.
But do you love it enough to leave it – ah.

Just like the lonely man there on the corner,
What he’s waiting for, I don’t know – oh.
But he waits every day now.
He’s just waiting for that something to show – oh.

Who’s the lonely man there on the corner,
What he’s waiting for, I don’t know.
But he’s there every day now.
And he’s just waiting for something to show – oh.

Who’s the lonely man there on the corner,
What he’s waiting for, I don’t know.
Oh but he waits every day now.
He’s just waiting for that something to show.

(Rutherford)

Ah, don’t you know, I’ve been on my own
But I’m coming home.
And I’d like you to be there,
I feel a little cold in the air,
And you’re not anywhere.
You’re just another face, I used to know.
But there is still a chance to hold on to our love,
‘Cos I gave you everything, everything I had.

Ooh, like it or not
You have done it this time
And like it or not, I’ve had enough.

Ooh, like it or not
There’s a lot I could say
‘Cos I’ve got a lot on my mind.

It won’t be very long
You’re just another face
That I once used to know
And I gave you everything,
But what have I got to show? Oh Oh

Oh, like it or not
You are out on the street
And like it or not
That’s where you will stay.

Oh, like it or not
There’s another thing darling,
Well I just could not stand another day
‘Cos if you want to know,
That there is still a chance to hold on to our love
‘Cos I gave you everything
Everything I had – Everything I had.

It’s been a long, been a long long time
Since I held anybody, since I loved anyone.
Oh it’s been a long, been a long long long time
But if I’m right or if I’m wrong, does it matter anyway?

It’s been a long long long long time
Since I held anybody, since I loved anyone.
Ooh it’s been a long long long long time
But if I’m right or if I’m wrong, does it matter anyway?

Ooh it’s been a long long long long time
Since I held anybody, since I loved anyone.
Oh it’s been a long, been a long long long time
I’m right, if I’m wrong, does it matter anyway?

It’s been a long long, long long long time
Since I held anybody, since I held

It’s funny you know,
‘Cos there’s an old rock ‘n’ roller
He’s got nowhere to go.
Did you ever think of taking him in?
Somebody help him, somebody please.

Put another record on
‘Cos he likes that song.

It’s funny you know,
Ooh he never done nothing, done nobody wrong,
Did he think about changing his name,
But I’m gonna tell him it’s the same old game.

Put another record on
Round and round and round and around – oh
Ah – see him smile.

Well lately I’ve seen him
Walking down the street, kinda moving his feet,
Everyone I know looks the other way
Somebody help him, somebody say –

Put another record on
Round and round and round and around – oh
Ah – see him smile.

It’s funny you know,
‘Cos there’s an old rock ‘n’ roller
He’s got nowhere to go.
Did you ever think of taking him in?
Somebody help him, somebody please.

Just put another record on
Put another record on
Put another record on Cos you know we like it
Put another record on Cos you know we like it…

(Abacab)

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

Parle-moi, tu ne me parles jamais.
Ooh, il semble que je peux parler.
Mais je peux entendre ma voix hurler.
Mais il n’y a pas de réponse du tout.

Regarde-moi, tu ne me regardes jamais,
Ooh, je suis resté assis, à regarder, ça semble si long.

J’ai l’impression que tu essaies de me dire;

Et ça me plombe.

(hah, hah hah hah hah hah)

Me et Sarah Jane,

Oh ça a été un long, été un long long long moment

Oh ça a été un long, été un long long long moment

Oh ça a été un long, été un long long long moment

Beaucoup du reste, comme In the air tonight a (aurait ???)

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord
I’ve been waiting for this moment, all my life, Oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord

Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I’ve seen your face before my friend
But I don’t know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off the grin, I know where you’ve been
It’s all been a pack of lies

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord
I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life, Oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord
And I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life, Oh Lord, Oh Lord

Well I remember, I remember don’t worry
How could I ever forget, it’s the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, no you don’t fool me
The hurt doesn’t show; but the pain still grows
It’s no stranger to you or me

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord…

(Collins)

It must be love, I’m feeling
This must be love
Oh this must be love, I’m feeling
This must be love

Well I wait in every day, just in case,
You decide to call
And I can hardly wait, ‘cos I never thought time could pass so slowly

It must be love, I’m feeling
This must be love
Oh this must be love, I’m feeling
This must be love

Happiness is something I never thought I’d feel again, but now I know
It’s you that I’ve been looking for
And day by day more and more
I know what you think, you’ve heard it before
Don’t tell me I know
But this feeling inside my heart,
You know I’m never letting go
‘Cos I think that…

It must be love, I’m feeling
This must be love
Oh this must be love, I’m feeling
This must be love

Words can only say so much
It’s hard to express
The things you do to me
You’re everything I could ever dreamed you’d be

This must be love, I’m feeling
This must be love
Oh this must be love, I’m feeling
This must be love…

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

I held the book so tightly in my hands,
I saw your picture, heard you call my name
It was strange I could not look away
I had to be there, I wanted to go

You gave me no reason
you gave me no warning
But I was with you,
by your side
Give me the strength, so I can help you
And I can be strong now, they don’t frighten me

It’s written in the book

The sun is hotter than before
But inside it’s cold, I wonder why
But if the fire within your heart can beat the storm
Well I believe we can make it right

It’s time now
to show our feelings
Looking through you
your heart’s empty
Whatever happened to you, you can’t change it,
Nowhere to run to, please, oh please don’t let me down

But wait a minute I don’t understand
it’s getting stronger, hold my hand
Don’t want to leave you I don’t want to go
But I’m a’ losing all control
Can’t you see me I’m slipping away
I can only stay if you’ve the will to keep me here
Oh Lord

It’s written in the book

I held the book so tightly in my hands
Saw your picture, heard you call my name
Oh, and even though we never, never touched
I keep waiting for you just the same

La la la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la la…

(Collins)

The roof is leaking and the wind is howling
Kids are crying ‘cos the sheets are so cold
I woke this morning found my hands were frozen
I’ve tried to fix the fire, but you know the damn thing’s too old

It’s been months now, since we heard from our Mary,
I wonder if she ever made the coast
She and her young man, they both moved out there
But I sure hope they write, just to let us know

And me, I’m getting stronger by the minute
My wife’s expecting, but I hope she can wait
‘Cos this winter looks like it’s gonna be another bad one
But Spring’ll soon be here,
Oh God I hope it’s not late

Ma and Pa lived here, and theirs before them

Tried their hardest to make it a home
Seems so long now since they passed over
Hope my children’ll try to make it their own

The roof is leaking and the wind is howling
Kids are crying, ‘cos the sheets are so cold
I woke this morning found my hands were frozen
I’ve tried to fix the fire, but you know the damn thing’s too old

And me, I’m getting stronger by the minute
My wife’s expecting, but I hope she can wait
‘Cos this winter looks like it’s gonna be another bad one
But Spring’ll soon be here,
Oh God I hope it’s not late

So you finally came right out and said it girl
What took you so long
It was in your eyes, that look’s been there for too long
I’m waiting in line
Would you say if I was wasting my time

Or did I miss again
I think I missed again oh

I think about it from time to time
When I’m lonely and on my own

I try to forget and yet, still rush to the telephone
I’m waiting in line
Would you say if I was wasting my time

Or did I miss again
I think I missed again oh
Or did I miss again
I think I missed again oh

Well it feels like something you want so bad
Then you think you’ve got it, but it’s something you already had
You can feel it all around you, but it’s something you just can’t touch
And I feel it coming at me
I can feel it coming at me

Or did I miss again
I think I missed again oh
Or did I miss again
I think I missed again

I’m waiting in line, but would you say if I was wasting my time

Or did I miss again…

(Collins)

Just as I thought I’d make it
You walk back into my life
Just like you never left

Just as I’d learned to be lonely
You call up to tell me
You’re not sure if you’re ready
But ready or not, you’ll take what you’ve got and leave

Leave me alone with my heart
I’m putting the pieces back together again
Just leave, leave me alone with my dreams
I can do without you, know what I mean…

I wish I could write a love song,
To show you the way I feel
Seems you don’t like to listen
Oh but like it or not, take what you’ve got and leave

Leave me alone with my heart
It’s broken in two and I’m not thinking too straight
Just leave, leave me alone with my dreams
You’ve taken everything else, you know what I mean

(Collins)

I never thought I’d ever get tired of playing games
But I’ve been holding back for too long
Now the time has come to get it right
Now’s the time to show them all that they’re wrong

‘Cos they said thunder and they said lightning
It would never strike twice
Oh but if that’s true, why can’t you tell me
How come this feels so nice, Oh it feels alright

Never ever did believe in guiding lights
‘Cos what you didn’t hold, slipped away
Oh but there’s a feeling deep down in my shoe
‘Cos things look like they’re going my way

‘Cos they say thunder and they say lightning
It would never strike twice
Oh but if that’s true, why can’t you tell me
How come this feels so nice, Oh it feels alright

I never ever did believe in a second chance
You get, just one crack of the whip, that’s all
If you played the game, you got treated right
Oh but I’m not playing the game, no more

‘Cos they say thunder and they say lightning
It would never strike twice
Oh but if that’s true, why can’t you tell me
How come this feels so nice, Oh it feels alright

(Collins)

If you feel it do it,
You don’t need a reason
For all you know it could be good for you

To show your feelings
Don’t just leave them
Do the things you believe in, it’s alright
Don’t worry turn around, I will still be here

I’m not moving…no really
You just try and push me out
No, I’m not moving…no really
No, I’m not going anywhere tonight

If you think it, say it
‘Cos no-one will stop you
Don’t keep quiet, just ‘cos you think you ought to
Feel free to shout it loud, speak your mind, spit it out

‘Cos I’m not moving…no really
You just try and push me out
No I’m not moving I can sit it out
No really, there’s no hurry
So don’t worry turn around, I will still be here

If it hurts don’t do it
‘Cos no-one can take you make you drink
And no-one can tell you what you think
Remember if your spirit starts to sink
Don’t worry turn around, I will still be here

(Collins)

I read all the letters, I read each word that you’ve sent to me
And though it’s past now, and the words start to fade
All the memories I have start, still remain

I’ve kept all the pictures, but I hide my feelings so no-one knows
Oh sure my friends all come round, but I’m in a crowd on my own
It’s ‘cos you’re gone now, but your heart, still remains
And it’ll be here if you come again

You see, I’d heard the rumours, I knew before you let me know
But I didn’t believe it, not you,
No you would not let me go
Seems I was wrong, but I love, I love you the same
And that’s the one thing that you can’t take away but just remember…

If leaving me is easy,
Going back is harder…

(Lennon/McCartney)

Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream
It is not dying, It is not dying.
Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void
It is shining, oh it is shining.
That you may see the meaning of within
It is beginning, oh it is beginning.

That love is all and love is ev’ryone
It is knowing, oh it is knowing.
And ignorance and hate may mourn the dead
It is believing, oh it is believing.
So play the game, existence to the end
Of the beginning, of the beginning.

Of the beginning, of the beginning…

“Recommandé : Un mélange ici de morceaux instrumentaux pour guitares, d’autres carrément planants, pour synthétiseur, et une suite instrumentale plus rock avec Mike Rutherford à la basse. Enregistrés en 1976 et 1977, variés, éclectiques mais réussi.”

I saw you today
And, through the distant years,
It all came back.

Two people, young and sheltered,
So unwary of the snares
We now know well.

You’re now a woman
But still brown and very beautiful,
You haven’t changed.

She took your place – oh, what a face,
Didn’t think I needed you
But I was wrong.

She came and she went out
Upon a voyage, it seems
She’s never coming back

For now you both are gone
It seems so long ago I was a
Happy man.

I saw you today
It didn’t seem as if
You’re coming back.

I saw myself today
It didn’t seem as if
I’m coming back.

And lo upon the hills
I see a shadow pass
To the other side –
We must accept these things.

Oh, how I love you.
Oh, how I love you.

(instrumental)

Now, now as the sun climbs the hills,
Softly she skips on the sand,
Daughter of the breeze
Free, like the swifts of the sky, I see her,
Dim, through the panes of my tears, I see her,
Then she is here, mine, always around me –
Mine till the morning mist comes.

Now, now that the evening must fall,
Weary, she sits by the river,
Kind winds toss her hair,
Free, like the swifts of the sky, I see her,
Dim, through the panes of the tears, I see her.

Then she is here, mine, always around me.
Her warm touch, glad to have found me.
Day-long – walking my kingdom,
Her soft smile speaking of freedom.

Now, now that the evening has gone,
Deep in a slumber she lies,
Golden hair to touch,
Free, like the swifts of the sky, I see her.
Dim, through the panes of my tears, I see her,
Then she’s no more than just an illusion,
Mine till the morning mist comes.

“Suite logique de l’album précédent, il en reprend les recettes, le son et ses musiciens mais lui ressemble un peu trop étrangement d’ailleurs (“Time to get out” faisant penser à “Every day”, “Slogans” à “Clocks”, etc…)

“The steppes” ouvre l’album de manière orientale, avaçant progressivement. “Time to get out” et sa double harmonie évoquent “Every day”, sans le solo de guitare.

Find me ninety miles from Cuba
In a land that has no borders
If the bomb can do it for you
We refuse to take your orders
We remember what you taught us
Time to get out, while you can
23 and one half billion
Joints were smoked by lunchtime that Thursday
On the Steppes it’s not so easy
Vodka helps them sing much stronger
Place your bets which side lives longer
Time to get out, while you can…

Endless fog and rain
Grounded ‘plane
There an unshaved man
Was exchanged
Wonder if, a cold grey sky
They led me here to die
(You can telephone from here)
When you wish
(Time to run away from here)
Won’t be missed at all
Turn the snow to red
Someone fled
Tell the viewers
Were you starved or fed?
Running wild, a hunted deer
Her eyes were filled with fear
(People dream in colour here)
So they said
(Shine your shoes from ear to ear)
Right or left, the west

Round and round and up and down
Round and round and up and down
Drinking all the wine we found
Not so easy to remain
Steady, happy
Round and round and up and down
Round and round and up and down
Drinking all the wine we found
Not so easy to remain
Steady, happy
Say it soft and say it slow
Tell me what I want to know
Pour it ’till it overflows
Love may come and love may go
Such a pity

Yes, I’m such a simple man
Just book me on the flight
Every day’s another place
Playing into the night
And you can’t unwind
You’re wrecked before the show
Everything’s fine when you feel
that ‘Johnny go go go’ – go go
Will you play tonight for me?
Promise I’ll do my best
Yes, rock music should be free
Money’s worth less and less
And the walls should be cracked
Four red faces make a noise
All dressed in black
I can’t tell if they are girls or boys – or boys
Will you play tonight for me?
Promise I’ll do my best
Yes, rock music should be free
Money’s worth less and less
And the walls should be cracked
Four red faces make a noise
All dressed in black
I can’t tell if they are girls or boys – or boys – or boys

I’ll tell you a story
About a girl who came my way
We upped and married
Three kids, a dog in Sante Fe
Now she’s gone I’m by myself
I’m gonna join
A sentimental institution
I’m gonna pack
Pack all my little old blues away
But I didn’t stay left on the shelf
Mrs. Johnson from Wisconsin
She’s a widow, plain to see
And Minnesota from Dakota
Likes the way I make her tea
Sweet as candy
I’m gonna join
A sentimental institution
No-one to stop me
From playing Benny Goodman all day
So if you want romance
Just step my way
The band starts to play
I can thrill her
With Glenn Miller
Or a song from
Louis Armstrong
With Jim Dorsey
Or Arty Shaw, we
Know this magic can’t go wrong
Old and lovely
She’s so wealthy
But so ugly
I’ve gone crazy
Someone help me do

When you move up close to me and run your fingers through my hair
I feel like when you’re positive, I’m more like Hercules unchained
Don’t ever try to sleep with me, I might get very nasty
As for beating people up for me, for someone’s liable to get paid

Hunt’s in the night, for that you got a love allergy
Hercules unchained

So you wear a part of me, I feel as though you might be watching
Every psycho fool I’m not sure, ooh you’re driving me insane
Your eyes are black, your hair is smooth, but I can’t care enough for you
Your love is like a sewer main, I wonder if you’ll die and we’ll get framed

Now easy go, cos that you got a love allergy
Hercules unchained

Well you tell me that you love me then you kiss me and you hug me
Then you kick me where it hurts, you know I think this situation’s strained
You tell me I’m your Romeo, you’re power-plus and man-of-moment
Guess we’d better move the scene to Superman and Lois Lane

I’m easy go, cos that you got a love allergy
Hercules unchained

Je n’ai jamais reussi à accrocher à No self control, Not one of us, et je ne sais même pas à quoi ressemble Lead a normal life !

I know something about opening windows and doors
I know how to move quietly to creep across creaky wooden floors
I know where to find precious things in all your cupboards and drawers
Slipping the clippers
Slipping the clippers through the telephone wires
The sense of isolation inspires
Inspires me
I like to feel the suspense when I’m certain you know I am there
I like you lying awake, your bated breath charging the air
I like the touch and the smell of all the pretty dresses you wear
Intruders happy in the dark
Intruder come
Intruder come and leave his mark, leave his mark

I am the intruder

(Gabriel)

Got to get some food
I’m so hungry all the time
I don’t know how to stop
I don’t know how to stop

Got to get some sleep
I’m so nervous in the night
I don’t know how to stop
No, I don’t know how to stop
I don’t know how to stop
I don’t know how to stop

Got to pick up the phone
I will call any number
I will talk to anyone
I know I’m gone too far
Much too far I gone this time
And I don’t want to think what I’ve done
I don’t know how to stop
No, I don’t know how to stop

There are always hidden silences
Waiting behind the chair
They come out when the coast is clear
They eat anything that moves
I go shaky at the knees
Lights go out, stars come down
Like a swarm of bees

No self-control

You know I hate to hurt you
I hate to see your pain
But I don’t know how to stop
No, I don’t know how to stop

Street after street
Night after night
I walk on through the rain
I walk on through the rain
I don’t know how to stop

I got no means to show identification
I got no papers show you what I am
You’ll have to take me just the way that you find me
What’s gone is gone and I do not give a damn
Empty stomach, empty head
I got empty heart and empty bed
I don’t remember
I don’t remember

I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything
-anything at all

Strange is your language and I have no decoder
Why don’t you make your intentions clear
With eyes to the sun and your mouth to the soda
Saying, “Tell me the truth, you got nothing to fear
Stop staring at me like a bird of prey
I’m all mixed up, I got nothing to say
I don’t remember
I don’t remember

I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything
Anything at all

I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don’t remember, I don’t recall
I got no memory of anything
absolutely anything at all
I don’t remember

The streets are lined with camera crews
Everywhere he goes is news
Today is different
Today is not the same
Today I make the action
Take snapshot into the light, snapshot into the light
I’m shooting into the light

Four miles down the cavalcade moves on
Driving into the sun
If I worked it out right
They won’t see me or the gun

Two miles to go, they’re clearing the road
The cheering has really begun
I’ve got my radio
I can hear what’s going on

I’ve been waiting for this
I have been waiting for this
All you people in TV land
I will wake up your empty shells
Peak-time viewing blown in a flash
As I burn into your memory cells
‘Cos I’m alive

They’re coming ’round the corner with the bikers at the front
I’m wiping the sweat from my eyes
-It’s a matter of time
-It’s a matter of will
And the governor’s car is not far behind
He’s not the one I’ve got in mind
‘Cos there he is-the man of the hour, standing in the limousine
“I don’t really hate you
-I don’t care what you do
We were made for each other
-Me and you
I want to be somebody
-You were like that too
If you don’t get given you learn to take
And I will take you.”

Holding my breath
Release the catch
And I let the bullet fly

All turned quiet-I have been here before
Lonely boy hiding behind the front door
Friends have all gone home
There’s my toy gun on the floor
Come back Mum and Dad
You’re growing apart
You know that I’m growing up sad
I need some attention
I shoot into the light

(Gabriel)

And through the wire I hear your voice
And through the wire I touch the power
And through the wire I see your face
It’s through the wire

Friday night, you’re staying at home I want you
I’m tickling and clicking a metronome I want you
Prowling the waterhole-I wait for the kill I want you
Pressure’s building-overspill I want you

And through the wire You are secure
And through the wire We can talk
And through the wire We can walk
It’s through the wire

Watchmaker steadies his delicate hand I want you
For barbeque parties on blood red sands I want you
Caught in the strugle tight on the rod I want you
Bring out the devil to bring out the god I want you

And through the wire I hear your voice
And through the wire I touch the power
And through the wire I see your face
It’s through the wire

Driving ’round the city rings
Staring at the shape of things
I talk in pictures not in words
Overloaded with everything we said
be careful where you tread
Watch the wire

And through the wire You are secure
And through the wire We can talk
And through the wire We can walk
And through the wire We’re clinging like leeches
And through the wire We push out tailormade speeches
And through the wire We get so strange across the border
We get so strange across the border

Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane
Jane plays with Willi, Willi is happy again
Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Britt
Adolf builts a bonfire, Enrico plays with it
-Whistling tunes we hid in the dunes by the seaside
-Whistling tunes we’re kissing baboons in the jungle
It’s a knockout
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers-war without tears
Games without frontiers-war without tears

Jeux sans frontieres

Andre has a red flag, Chiang Ching’s is blue
They all have hills to fly them on except for Lin Tai Yu
Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games
Hiding out in tree-tops shouting out rude names
-Whistling tunes we hide in the dunes by the seaside
-Whistling tunes we piss on the goons in the jungle
It’s a knockout
If looks could kill they probably will
In games without frontiers-wars without tears
If looks could kill they probably will
In games without frontiers-war without tears
Games without frontiers-war without tears

It’s only water
In a stranger’s tear
Looks are deceptive
But distinctions are clear
A foreign body
And a foreign mind
Never welcome
In the land of the blind
You may look like we do
Talk like we do
But you know how it is

You’re not one of us
Not one of us
No you’re not one of us
Not one of us
Not one of us
No you’re not one of us

There’s safety in numbers
When you learn to divide
How can we be in
If there is no outside
All shades of opinion
Feed an open mind
But your values are twisted
Let us help you unwind
You may look like we do
Talk like we do
-But you know how it is

You’re not one of us
Not one of us
No you’re not one of us

(Gabriel)

It’s nice here with a view of the trees
Eating with a spoon?
They don’t give you knives?
‘Spect you watch those trees
Blowing in the breeze
We want to see you lead a normal life

September ’77
Port Elizabeth weather fine
It was business as usual
In police room 619
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

When I try to sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

You can blow out a candle
But you can’t blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

And the eyes of the world are
watching now
watching now
