Mais Sérieusement : l’Irlande du nord dans That’s the way it is, l’Apartheid dans Colours, les sans abris dans Another day in paradise, les relations père – fils dans All of my life et Father to Son. Heureusement, il reste des morceaux legers et efficaces : Something happened on the way to heaven et Find a way to my heart. In the air tonight : Another day in paradise.

The signs are getting clearer, clearer than you need
The writing’s on the wall, for you to see

You never thought you’d ever get the taste
You never thought that it could be this good
Just tell me what you want and I’ll find the key
Reach out and touch it’s all yours.

If you hang in long enough, you’ll do it
Just hang in long enough

You’re down on the ground, or so you say
You’d sell the hole in your pocket, if you could find a way
Don’t ask me how I know, you don’t wanna hear
It’s been a long hard road, and the end is getting near.

You never thought you’d ever get the chance
You never thought your break would come along
If you tell me what you want, I’ll find the key
Just reach out and touch it’s all yours

If you hang in…

They always say
The best things in life are free
But you want to have everything
Well you’re going to have to beg if you want it all.

So hang in long enough, you’ll do it
Hang in long enough

They’ll let you out, then pull you in
Playing hell with your emotions,
You’ll feel like giving in.

So just hang in long enough…

(Collins)

All day long he was fighting for you
And he didn’t even know your name
Young men come and young men go
But life goes on just the same

And I don’t know why
Why do we keep holding on
I don’t know why
Pretending to be oh so strong
Oh why
Is there something I don’t know
Or something very wrong, with you and me
or maybe

That’s the way it is, there’s nothing I can do,
That’s just the way it is.

They’ve been waiting for word to come down
They’ve been waiting for you night and day
They won’t wait any longer for you
It may already be too late

And I don’t know why…

You see the dying, you feel the pain
What have you got to say
If we agree that we can disagree
We could stop all of this today

It’s been your life for as long as you can remember
But you cannot fight no more
You must want to look your son in the eyes
When he asks you what you did it for

‘Cos all day long he was fighting for you
And he didn’t even know your name
Young men come and young men go
But life goes on just the same

I don’t know why…

(Collins)

We never talked about it
But I hear the blame was mine
I’d call you up to say I’m sorry
But I wouldn’t want to waste your time

‘Cos I love you, but I can’t take any more
There’s a look I can’t describe in your eyes
Yes we could try, like we tried before
When you kept on telling me those lies

Do you remember…?

There seemed no way to make up
‘Cos it seemed your mind was set
And the way you looked it told me
It’s a look I know I’ll never forget

You could’ve come over to my side
You could’ve let me know
You could’ve tried to see the difference between us
But it seemed too far for you to go.

Do you remember…?

Through all of my life
In spite of all the pain
You know people are funny sometimes
‘cos they just can’t wait
To get hurt again

Do you remember…?

There are things we won’t recall
Feelings we’ll never find
It’s taken so long to see it
Cos we never seemed to have the time

There was always something more important to do
More important to say
But “I love you” wasn’t one of those things
And now it’s too late

Do you remember…?

(Collins/Stuermer)

We had a life, we had a love,
But you don’t know what you’ve got ’til you lose it
Well that was then and this is now
And I want you back
How many times do I have to say I’m sorry

How can something so good go so bad
How can something so right go so wrong
I don’t know, I don’t have all the answers
But I want you back
How many times can I say I’m sorry

You can run, and you can hide
But I’m not leaving less you come with me
We’ve had our problems but I’m on your side
You’re all I need, please believe in me

I only wanted someone to love
But something happened on the way to heaven
It got a hold of me and wouldn’t let go
And I want you back
How many times do I have to say I’m sorry

You can run…

They say you can’t take it with you
When you go
And I believe it
But taking what I’ve got or being
here with you, you know
I’d rather leave it

You can run…

(Collins)

Deep inside the border
Children are crying
Fighting for food
Holding their heads
Breaking their bread with a stone

All along the roadside
people are standing
watching the sun
shielding their eyes
Brushing the flies from their face

Tell me, what can you say
Tell me, who do you blame
Like a mirror you see yourself
These people each have a name

All around the township
Young men are dying
(of) hunger and thirst
The well has run dry
The tears from her eye feeds her son

Tell me…

You can say you’re pulling back
We see the pictures everywhere
But what we don’t see is what’s
Going on behind the closed doors
And you don’t seem to care

Do you expect me to believe you
How can you really think
You can take your horse down to the water
Hold a gun at his head
And make him drink

No matter what you say, it never gets any better
No matter what you do, we never see any change

People living without rights
Without their dignity
How loud does one man have to shout
To earn his right to be free

You can keep your toy soldiers
To segregate the black and white
But when the dust settles
And the blood stops running
How do you sleep at night?

No matter what you say…

What makes you so high and mighty
What makes you so qualified
You can sit there and say
How many have their freedom
But how many more have died

You decide to sit in judgement
Trying to play God yourself
Someday soon the buck is gonna stop
Stop with you and noone else

No matter…

She calls out to the man on the street
“Sir, can you help me?
It’s cold and I’ve nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?”

He walks on, doesn’t look back
He pretends he can’t hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh think twice, it’s another day for
You and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it’s just another day for you,
You and me in paradise

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she’s been crying
She’s got blisters on the soles of her feet
Can’t walk but she’s trying

Oh think twice…

Oh lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she’s been there
Probably been moved on from every place
‘Cos she didn’t fit in there

Oh think twice…

(Collins)

You’ve gotta shout if you’ve got something to say
I know it’s getting bad, you read it every day
And you, you can try your best to fight it
But you can’t make it on your own

Someone better tell the people up there
I think they ought to know, the bubble’s just about to bust
Tell them they’d better beware
The word is on the street, get up on your feet, and shout out

The kids out there don’t know how to react
The streets are getting tough and that’s a matter of fact
and I, I can’t take it any longer
But we can’t make it on our own

The people there find it hard to relate
They don’t know how it feels to be standing there on your own
Believe me, it’s never too late
It’s time to make a move, get up on your feet and shout

Stop, look down, everybody, do you see what’s going on
around you, stop…

Shout out, shout it out, shout loud
Shout out, shout it out, shout loud

There are people who give and there are people who take
But I believe it’s gonna get better
Realise what a difference you make
And don’t turn away, Hey! I’m talking to you!

So there’s only the one solution
Stop and think what’s going on
You can draw your own conclusions
But we won’t make it on our own

Someone better tell the people up there
I think they ought to know
The bubble’s just about to burst
Tell them they’d better beware
The word is on the street
Get up on your feet and shout

Stop, look down, everybody
Do you see what’s going on
Around you, stop…

(Collins)

All of my life, I’ve been searching
For the words to say how I feel.
I’d spend my time thinking too much
And leave too little to say what I mean
I’ve tried to understand the best I can
All of my life.

All of my life, I’ve been saying sorry
For the things I know I should have done
All the things I could have said come back to me
Sometimes I wish that it had just begun
Seems I’m always that little too late
All of my life

Set ’em up, I’ll take a drink with you
Pull up a chair, I think I’ll stay
Set ’em up, cos I’m going nowhere
There’s too much I need to remember, too much I need to say

All of my life, I’ve been looking
But it’s hard to find the way
Reaching past the goal in front of me
While what’s important just slips away
It doesn’t come back but I’ll be looking
All of my life

Set ’em up…

All of my life, there have been regrets
That I didn’t do all I could
Making records upstairs, while he watched TV
I didn’t spend the time I should
It’s a memory I will live with
All of my life.

(Collins)

Somewhere down the road, you’re gonna find a place
It seems so far, but it never is
You won’t need to stay, but you might lose your strength
on the way

Sometimes you may feel you’re the only one
Cos all the things you thought were safe, now they’re gone
But you won’t be alone, I’ll be here to carry you along
Watching you ’til all your work is done

When you find your heart, you’d better run with it
Cos when she comes along, she could be breaking it
No there’s nothing wrong, you’re learning to be strong
Don’t look back
She may soon be gone, no don’t look back
She’s not the only one, remember that

If your heart is beating fast, then you know she’s right
If you don’t know what to say, well, that’s all right
You don’t know what to do?
Remember she is just as scared as you

Don’t be shy, even when it hurts to say
Remember, you’re gonna get hurt someday, anyway
Then you must lift your head, keep it there
Remember what I said
I’ll always be with you don’t forget
Just look over your shoulder I’ll be there.

If you look behind you, I will be there.

(Collins)

Find a way to my heart, and I will always be with you
From wherever you are, I’ll be waiting
I’ll keep a place in my heart, you will see it shining through
So find a way to my heart, and I will, I will follow you

This journey’s not easyfor you, I know
If your footsteps get too faint to hear, I’ll go
Cos you know, questions are never that easy
And never the same
You have the answer believe me
If you have the faith

Find a way to my heart…

Time may come, and time may go, I know
If you should call out for me, I’ll go
But you know, there is a code to be broken
I wrap it around
Without a word being spoken
Without a sound

There’s a reason I hide my heart
Out of sight out of mind
And when I find out just who you are
The door will be open for you to..

Find a way to my heart…

I am the throwback
But you don’t know I walk amongst you every day
I don’t need moonlight
Or any secret word to make the change in me

I don’t know what you see in your rules
In conversation or in delicate feelings of romance

If you know some place I can go
Then I ask you lead me to the door

In deepest midnight
That time of night when even dogs believe in ghosts
I walk the backstreets
Of every dirty city searching for the route

That leads me back to where I belong
I don’t know how but I’m trapped in the wrong time

If you know some place I can go
Then I ask you lead me to the door

Nobody sees me no one believes me
Nobody understands the words that I say

Tell me you see me say you believe me
Tell me you understand and I will be free – oh

I guess I don’t fit the times
I’m just a throwback
I’m trapped but still I search for a clue
From far away I hear the call
Come on back to me

I am the throwback
I have no use for anything I see
I’d like to find a country
Where no one else has ever been before

I don’t know what you’re wanting from life
I just don’t understand your tricks and your slyness

If you know some place I can go
Then I ask you lead me to the door

(I’m just a throwback)
(I’m just a throwback) I’m just a throwback
(I’m just a throwback) Don’t need no moonlight
(I’m just a throwback) I’m just a throwback

(Banks)

Night and once again I hear you calling
In my mind you speak the words I long to hear
I see your face can even feel your breathing
Though I know that you are never really there

If I had been born bolder you would be truly next to me

So then
I’ll be waiting I’ll be waiting
I’m waiting just for you

To stroke your hair and feel your arms around me
To talk of things we did or we would do
Would be the kind of magic I’d believe in
But there’s some things even wizards cannot do

If I had been born bolder I wouldn’t need a magic wand

So then
I’ll be waiting I’ll be waiting
I’d give up all for you
What else can I do
I’m waiting just for you

We stand together in the evening sun
Unspoken thoughts we share as one
Golden light on distant mountains
Slowly fades as surely as the light of dreams

Don’t think about tomorrow
In the darkness I can still believe you’re here
If the power of thought can give a vision substance
Then in truth you are alive and close to me

If I had been born bolder I would take you in my arms
Who’s to stop me reaching for you the only one is me

So then
I’ll be waiting I’ll be waiting
I’d give up all for you
What else can I do
I only dream of you
What else can I do
I’m waiting just for you
What else can I do

I’ll be waiting

If you want me to I will be your fairy princess
Your dream of romance
If you ask me then I can be your queen of darkness
Take you below

It don’t matter at all
Devil or priestess – teacher or fool
What you want will be what you receive
I am the answer to all of your dreams

If you wanted a creature from another dimension
I’m the answer
If you wanted a reason for an endless conflict
I’m the one

It don’t matter at all
Devil or priestess – teacher or fool
What you want will be what you receive
I am the answer to all of your dreams

I can be your nightmare
And then I’ll take you places you didn’t mean to go
Or take a long look
Into the future
I’ll tell you many things that you didn’t want to know

If you want me to I will be your humble servant
Need your protection
If you ask me then I can be your fearless fighter
Your Joan of Arc

It don’t matter at all
Devil or priestess – teacher or fool
What you want will be what you receive
I am the answer to all of your dreams

Build me up – bring me down
Put me back on my feet again
Please leave me alone

If you want me to I will be your fairy princess
Your dream of romance
If you ask me then I can be your queen of darkness
Take you below

It don’t matter at all
Devil or priestess – teacher or fool
What you want will be what you receive
I am the answer to all of your dreams

Build me up – bring me down
Put me back on my feet again
Please leave me – please leave me alone

I was always insecure
I never was too sure
That what we did that night was right
Or very wrong

It was never in dispute
It was always understood
But I can’t leave it there

Now what am I supposed to do about it

Rest your weary head with mine
I’ll take you through the night
And bring you to the dawn in hope

But don’t turn your head around
No matter what you see
You cannot return

You’re caught by the magnet
Drawn to the light
Like a prisoner you are captured
You are left without a choice

Now it’s all because of you
That I don’t know what to do
My memory’s confused when
I recall that night

Now the coin is in the air
And I don’t know if I care too much
Which way it lands

Oh and what am I supposed to do about it

Rest your weary head with mine
I’ll take you through the night
And bring you to the dawn in hope

But don’t turn your head around
No matter what you see
You cannot return

You’re caught by the magnet
Drawn to the light
Like a prisoner you are captured
You are left without a choice – oh

That night Rest your weary head with mine
Take me through the night I’ll take you through the night
Take me through the night to the dawn And bring you to the dawn in
hope

It’s all because of you But don’t turn your head around
I don’t know what to do No matter what you see
My memory’s confused that night You cannot return

Oh I can’t undo that night…

When private rainclouds form
And tears seem the likely solution
Try to shelter from the storm
Who knows what tomorrow might bring

Now the sun breaks through the dark
And life isn’t quite as confusing
Release your cloud of woe
And follow its course with your eyes

Higher higher into the blue sky
Higher higher than the tallest of mountains
Higher higher into the sunlight
Higher higher till it vanishes from view

And I will watch as it goes
And I will follow the cloud till it is gone

Though the past has let you down
Don’t be too hard on the future
You can make it through the day
Who knows what tomorrow might bring

Higher higher into the blue sky
Higher higher than the tallest of mountains
Deeper deeper into the distance
It’s not too late for you – oh yeah
Higher higher into the sunlight
Higher higher till it vanishes from view

And I will watch as it goes
And I will watch as the cold wind blows
And I will watch as it goes
And I will follow the cloud till it is gone

When private rainclouds form
And tears seem the likely solution
Try to shelter from the storm
Who knows what tomorrow might bring to you
Dream what tomorrow might give to you
Believe what tomorrow might bring

Dry forever the sun blinds off the whitewashed walls
Unbelieving she looks up from the unswept floor
You don’t have to go you don’t have to tell me
All that talk of lofty causes wrapped in foolish pride
That’s a lie

That you don’t have to tell me

I don’t wanna hear how wisdom walks beside you
Or how God is inside you again

No wire marks the border
No fence or wall
No town breaks this horizon
Nothing at all

Dust surrounds her the men go hungry for disaster
All they leave behind are
The old and useless and the broken
That never will be mended

I don’t wanna hear you’re captured by the madness
Of ideas long discredited from other people’s minds
They’re all lies

That you don’t have to tell me

All that comes of this is poverty and hardship
Still you don’t absorb a word I say

But now there is a border
A line of blood
Now men patrol the border
But they’re dead

(Banks)

The hot seat’s vacant cos he gave up the reins
He’s kissed his title goodbye run far away
He’s gone to ground in some hole – I don’t know where
All I know is somehow that I’m big man up here

I don’t need your worship
Just need a sacrifice each day
No need to worry
Just want to help in every way

I just don’t know what all these levers are for
Well I don’t know it but I’m reasonably sure
I’ve got a red light warning – I don’t know why
Maybe it will go away if I close my eyes

I don’t need your worship
Just need a sacrifice each day
No need to worry
Just want to help in every way
Help every day
In every way

I don’t know what’s come over me
I’m really feeling rather strange

I got no time for wisdom cos I’m the fool
I got no time for those who won’t obey my rules
Some day I won’t be teacher – I don’t know when
Ha but I’m gonna please myself until then

I don’t need your worship
Just need a sacrifice each day
No need to worry
Just want to help in every way
Help every day
In every way

Don’t need your worship
Just need a sacrifice each day
No need to worry
Just want to help in every way
Help every day
In every way

Wandering in a daze
Through a cold mechanical maze
I am lost and confused
I am always the loser
You tell me there’s a place
Where I can be alive

Is it near is it far is it somewhere between
This land you say exists that I’ve never seen
Call me please talk to me tell me the truth
I need to believe like a house needs a roof
Is it strange is it wonderful I need to know
Do you have a picture that you can show
The minute to capture the moment has come
The minute to capture the moment has come

It’s easy to believe
But less easy to imagine
I’ve grown so used to not coping
Waiting eternally hoping
Wishes come and go
But this one will stay I know
Could the time for adventure be
Just around the corner

Is it near is it far is it somewhere between
The land you say exists that I’ve never seen
Call me please talk to me tell me the truth
I need to believe like a house needs a roof
Is it strange is it wonderful I need to know
Do you have a picture that you can show
The minute to capture the moment has come
The minute to capture the moment has come

I wonder if it’s true
Do I put my faith in you
Do I risk one more failure
To add to this tale
Or do I turn my back
And slowly walk away
Please tell me if you know

Is it near is it far is it somewhere between
The land you say exists that I’ve never seen
Call me please talk to me tell me the truth
I need to believe like a house needs a roof
Is it strange is it wonderful I need to know
Do you have a picture that you can show
The minute to capture the moment has come
The minute to capture the moment has come

(Banks)

The more I dream of you
The less you want me to
The more I need to hold you
The less you seem to care

If I knew what I was meant to do
Then I’d be doing it all the time
If I could find the key
I’d keep the doorway open wide

But I will stay with you
Forever if you want me to
As long as there’s a heaven
And that’s a long long time

To yearn without reward
To plan and hope in vain
It’s you that has the power you know
To soothe and end this pain

Another season passes
But the sky is always grey
Autumn leaves and summer breezes
Can’t bring on a change

But I will stay with you
Forever if you want me to
As long as there’s a heaven
and that’s a long long time

The more I hide it the more it shows
The more confused I feel
And on my own alone
Tell me what am I supposed to do?

It’s so hard to understand
What means so much to me
What fills my heart with fire
Will only leave you cold

I wonder what you’re thinking
As we play the game again
I wonder if you knew my thoughts
You’d still want me to say

That I will stay with you
Forever if you want me to
As long as there’s a heaven
And that’s a long long time

The more I hide it the more it shows
The more confused I feel
And on my own alone
Tell me what am I supposed to do?

The more I hide it the more it shows…

(And diamonds aren’t so hard to find)

Don’t let it bring you down
Your woman’s gone and left you
The taxman’s here he’s knocking on your door – oh

Don’t let it bring you down
Your brand new house is burning
They’re dumping toxic waste in your backyard – oh
Your next door neighbour’s gone and won the pools
The life’s so bad you wish that it was all over – over

You and I
Could leave this all behind
Dream a little
Leave ourselves behind

Come with me
Where dragons rule the air
And diamonds aren’t so hard to find
And come what may
Heroes never fail
And time stands still
No matter if you’re young or old

Don’t let it bring you down
Nothing lasts for ever
Even female movie stars grow old – oh

We try to break the rules and never age
We try so hard but everything’s in vain
Then one day you wake and find that it’s all over – over

You and I
Could leave this all behind
Dream a little
Leave ourselves behind

Come with me
Where dragons rule the air
And diamonds aren’t so hard to find
And come what may
Heroes never fail
And time stands still
No matter if you’re young or old

So come with me
Where dragons rule the air
And diamonds aren’t so hard to find…

Last rites of innocence”, “A bed, a chair and a guitar”, “The sleeping sea”…

It must be hard
being an angel
when the devil in your heart
won’t set you free
it must be hard
being an angel
when the world has let you down
imperfection all around

Hey look at me
it must be hard
it must be hard
it must be hard.

Nobody’s perfect
all of the time
nobody’s perfect
we are what we are
there’s no perfect reason
and no perfect rhyme
for most of the time
that’s what we’re looking for.

Gentlemen gentlemen please!
can you please support the notion
of what I’m saying here
that the person here in question
must be an angel here on earth
if they can’t see a human being
for what a human being’s really worth
gentlemen please!

Nobody’s perfect
all of the time
nobody’s perfect
we are what we are
there’s no perfect reason
and no perfect rhyme
for most of the time
that’s what we’re looking for.

It must be hard
being an angel
it must be hard
when the world has let you down
it must be hard
being an angel
it must be hard.

Nobody’s perfect
all of the time
nobody’s perfect
we are what we are
there’s no perfect reason
no perfect rhyme

that’s what we’re looking for…

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door

I know that I’m a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I’m a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I’m afraid that’s all we’ve got

You say you just don’t see it
He says it’s perfect sense
You just can’t get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It’s too late when we die
To admit we don’t see eye to eye

So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It’s the bitterness that lasts

So Don’t yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don’t give up, and don’t give in
You may just be O.K.

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It’s too late when we die
To admit we don’t see eye to eye

I wasn’t there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn’t get to tell him
All the things I had to say

I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I’m sure I heard his echo
In my baby’s new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It’s too late when we die
To admit we don’t see eye to eye

(Rutherford/Robertson)

I believe in Jesus
his father’s only son
I do believe he sees us
with the loaded gun.

I believe in the magic
Of the Mujahedin
I still believe in Daniel Ortega
the sun in Omega, the Lord of the Rings
I believe in most everything.
I believe, I believe

I have a friend in England
who says I must escape
the meetings of Mao and Nixon
it’s an old debate.

But I believe in the magic
of the King and the Queen
And I still have a young rebel’s sympathy
radical symphonies still have a ring
I believe in most everything.
I believe
I fear this muddled thinking
has to go some time
I fear this sinking feeling’s
not the best of signs
I feel I’m in trouble
as the Eighties close
I look to the future
I’m frightened, I’m scared U suppose.

You may think it’s foolish
that I still believe in love
You laugh and you sneer
-it’s cruel
It’s what I’m thinking of.

I believe in the magic
in the power of the soul
one to one’s my equation
that carries the nation on to the goal
we’re all brothers and sisters, I’m told.

I believe, I believe, I believe in love
do you believe what you’re seeing
Oh I believe in love.

I believe in love
I believe, I believe,
I believe, I believe, I believe in love.

(Rutherford/Neil)

There is nothing wrong with me
there’s nothing wrong with you
maybe we’re just blind to see
each other’s point of view.

Nobody knows what we had.

You could do much better,
you could do much worse than me.
I could have walked right out on you
there was nothing stopping me

Nobody knows what we had.

We were running of passion
we were running out of time
there’s a face to fit the future
there’s a face to fit the crime.
Now the truth is on the table
and the ghost is plain to see
there’s nothing wrong with you or me.

I won’t live in your world,
you can’t live in mine
We don’t hate each other darlin’
we just gave up trying.

Nobody knows what we had.

Maybe I’m not crying
maybe I don’t mind
But it hurts just knowing
your children won’t be mine.

Nobody knows what we had.

(Rutherford/Neil)

He’s a poor boy in his pocket
he’s a poor boy in his shoes.
he’s done his time
he’s stood in line
that boy has paid his dues.

He ain’t looking for a handout
he’s just looking for a start
he don’t hate anyone
he don’t carry a gun
you can tell that kid is smart.

So you can’
t keep that poor boy down
you can be unkind
you can rob him blind
but you can’t keep that poor boy down.
you can lie and cheat
you can chain his feet
but you can’t keep that poor boy down.

And all down throughout the ages
the kid’s been treated rough
just take a look
in any history book
you can see that times were tough.

Now we move up to the nineties
up to the 21st
one day he’ll stand
a full grown man
and be the same as all of us.

So you can’t keep that poor boy down
you can lock him up
you can break his cup
but you can’t keep that poor boy down.

You can fight and steal
you can drag your heels
but you can’t keep that poor boy down
You can kick his ass
if the kid’s got class
you can’t keep that poor boy down.

Let’s stop the truck
go back and pick him up
you can’t keep that poor boy down.

Let him go!!

(Rutherford/Neil)

While you’re defending yourself
maybe you’d like to explain
are you a king for a day
is it some ancient campaign
Warpaint your flag on your face
Gather the troops on the line
you never made a mistake
There at the scene of the crime.

blood on your hands
blood on your feet
down in the pouring rain
what do you care
out on the street
we’re gonna drive you insane
nobody else to blame for all that.

Where are the angry young men
where are the fighters or yore
looking for trouble again
looking to settle a score.

Why do you reincarnate
why will you always be here
pour out a nation of hate
pour out an ocean of tears.

blood on your hands
blood on your feet
down in the pouring rain
what do you care
out on the street
we’re gonna drive you insane
nobody else to blame for all that.

Nobody questions the power elite
who’s gonna take up the strain
nobody else to blame!

(Rutherford/Neil)

I don’t want to condescend
I just want to be your friend
I don’t want to drive your car
I just want to make a start
with you

I don’t want to touch your lace
I just want to touch your face
but everytime I reach for you
you say you don’t want me to – you say
don’t
don’t hold my hand
you don’t understand
don’t push too hard
don’t go too far – don’t

you don’t seem to be concerned
when you make my body burn
you don’t want to torture me
it’s just a little purgatory
I don’t want to call you names
you insist on playing hames
when I try to state my case
you just put me in my place — you say
don’t
will you walk with me
will you talk with me
open your heart
and be human to me
it’s not fantasy
it’s reality
This need for you that’s
Consuming me.

I don’t want to tempt no fate
you just won’t communicate
when I try some sympathy
You just turn your back on me
You say don’t

(Rutherford/Robertson/Young)

Hey, hey one fine day
you’re going away ooh
what do you say, little girl.

Yeah it’s you I’m talkin’ to
tell me what right have you
to leave me black and blue.

You say nothing lasts forever
no never, ever, ever
but the goods you got
oh God, you know it’s hot, hot, hot, hot, hot.
Ooh, it’s hot.

That’s right it’s black and white
you’re saying day is night
But you leave me black and blue.

You say nothing’s everlasting
and that love is just the last thing
that you feel you want.
You know you got
You know it’s hot, hot, hot, hot, hot.

We’ll I’ve tried to make it on my own
But I just can’t leave your love alone.

Maybe just maybe, I’ll get it sometime
from a boat or a plane or a magical sign
Send me the pieces, that make up my heart
I’ll put them together, a part by a part by ….

Hey you I’m talking to,
Tell me what right have you
to leave me black and blue
yeah what right have you, what right
to leave me black and blue
you wanna fight
you’re saying day is night
you leave me black
bring back the pieces that make up my heart
and I’ll put them together, a part by a part by a…

Hey you I’m black and blue.

(Rutherford/Neil/Young)

Four o’clock in the morning
waiting for the light
it’s another day dawning
another day
a better life.

Walk out in the morning sun
I’m always going to be
with you

Lay down when your day is done
I’m always going to be
with you.

I don’t blame you for crying
no-one else could see
but today we’ll be flying
forever you
forever me.

Walk out in the morning sun
I’m always going to be with you
Lay down when your day is done
I’m always going to be
with you

No doubts now we’re free to run
I’m always going to be
with you.

It’s a beautiful,
Beautiful day….

(Rutherford/Robertson)

These are dangerous times
that were living in
and there are dangerous signs
that were giving in to fear
late one night, I’m lying here
I thought I heard a sound.

Tell the mothers and the babes
tell the old, tell the sick they will be safe
get the young males. Tell them to be brave
I was so concerned with saving live
I never saw you pull the knife.

High on the mountains
across seven seas
All of the people
why me, why me?
Do you feel so frustrated
Frightened and feared
answer my question
Why me, why me, why me
why me, why me, why me?

You’re such an angry young man
with all your grievances
people don’t understand,
they just can’t understand
what you must do to stay alive.

So you try to justify
all the violence and hate, before your eyes.
Through the ages better men than you have tried
to give what is not theirs to give
to take the land where others live.

High on the mountains
across seven seas
all of the people why me, why me?
Do you feel so frustrated
frightened and feared
answer my question
why here, why now,
why here, why now, hey here,
why now, why me?

Oh, for now you have the power
the guns and all the swords
but nature has a nasty habit
of balancing her flaws.

Now you may try to break my body
lock me up and throw away the key
but you’ll never break my spirit
I’m free!

red rain is coming down
red rain
red rain is pouring down
pouring down all over me

I am standing up at the water’s edge in my dream
I cannot make a single sound as you scream
it can’t be that cold, the ground is still warm to touch
this place is so quiet, sensing that storm

red rain is coming down
red rain
red rain is pouring down
pouring down all over me

well I’ve seen them buried in a sheltered place in this town
they tell you that this rain can sting, and look down
there is no blood around see no sign of pain
hay ay ay no pain
seeing no red at all, see no rain

red rain is coming down
red rain
red rain is pouring down
pouring down all over me

red rain-
putting the pressure on much harder now
to return again and again
just let the red rain splash you
let the rain fall on your skin
I come to you defences down
with the trust of a child

red rain is coming down
red rain
red rain is pouring down
pouring down all over me
and I can’t watch any more
no more denial
it’s so hard to lay down in all of this
red rain is coming down
red rain is pouring down
red rain is coming down all over me
I see it
red rain is coming down
red rain is pouring down
red rain is coming down all over me
I’m bathing in it
red rain coming down
red rain is coming down
red rain is coming down all over me
I’m begging you
red rain coming down
red rain coming down
red rain coming down
red rain coming down
over me in the red red sea
over me
over me
red rain

you could have a steam train
if you’d just lay down your tracks
you could have an aeroplane flying
if you bring your blue sky back

all you do is call me
I’ll be anything you need

you could have a big dipper
going up and down, all around the bends
you could have a bumper car, bumping
this amusement never ends

I want to be your sledgehammer
why don’t you call my name
oh let me be your sledgehammer
this will be my testimony
show me round your fruitcage
‘cos I will be your honey bee
open up your fruitcage
where the fruit is as sweet as can be

I want to be your sledgehammer
why don’t you call my name
you’d better call the sledgehammer
put your mind at rest
I’m going to be-the sledgehammer
this can be my testimony
I’m your sledgehammer
let there be no doubt about it

sledge sledge sledgehammer

I’ve kicked the habit
shed my skin
this is the new stuff
I go dancing in, we go dancing in
oh won’t you show for me
and I will show for you
show for me, I will show for you
yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do mean you
only you
you’ve been coming through
going to build that powerr
build, build up that power, hey
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
going to feel that power, build in you
come on, come on, help me do
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
I’ve been feeding the rhythm
it’s what we’re doing, doing
all day and night

(Gabriel)

in this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I’ve changed my face, I’ve changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose

don’t give up
‘cos you have friends
don’t give up
you’re not beaten yet
don’t give up
I know you can make it good

though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we’d be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn

drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground

don’t give up
you still have us
don’t give up
we don’t need much of anything
don’t give up
’cause somewhere there’s a place
where we belong

rest your head
you worry too much
it’s going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don’t give up
please don’t give up

‘got to walk out of here
I can’t take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river’s flowing
that river’s flowing

moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no-one needs

don’t give up
’cause you have friends
don’t give up
you’re not the only one
don’t give up
no reason to be ashamed
don’t give up
you still have us
don’t give up now
we’re proud of who you are
don’t give up
you know it’s never been easy
don’t give up
’cause I believe there’s the a place
there’s a place where we belong

(Gabriel/Rhodes)

I want to be with you
I want to be clear
but each time I try
it’s the voice I hear
I hear that voice again

I’m listening to the conversation
judge and jury in my head
it’s colouring everything
all we did and said
and still I head that sharp tongue talking
talking tangled words
I can sense the danger
just listen to the wind

I want you close I want you near
I can’t help but listen
but I don’t want to hear
hear that voice again

I want to be with you
I want to be clear
but each time I try
it’s the voice I hear
I hear that voice again

I’m hearing right and wrong so clearly
there must be more than this
it’s only in uncertainty
that we’re naked and alive
I hear it through the rattle of a streetcar
hear it through the things you said
I can get so scared
listen to the wind

I want you close I want you near
I can’t help but listen
but I don’t want to hear
hear that voice again

what I carry in my heart
brings us so close or so far apart
only love can make love

I want you close I want you near
I can’t help but listen
but I don’t want to hear
I hear that voice again

I want to be with you
I want to be clear
but each time I try
it’s the voice I hear
I hear that voice again

for anne sexton

looking down on empty streets, all she can see
are the dreams all made solid
are the dreams all made real

all of the buildings, all of those cars
were once just a dream
in somebody’s head

she pictures the broken glass, she pictures the steam
she pictures a soul
with no leak at the seam

lets take the boat out
wait until darkness
let’s take the boat out
wait until darkness comes

nowhere in the corridors of pale green and grey
nowhere in the suburbs
in the cold light of day

there in the midst of it so alive and alone
words support like bone

dreaming of mercy st.
wear your inside out
dreaming of mercy
in your daddy(‘s arms again
dreaming of mercy st.
‘swear they moved that sign
dreaming of mercy
in your daddy’s arms

pulling out the papers from the drawers that slide smooth
tugging at the darkness, word upon word

confessing all the secret things in the warm velvet box
to the priest-he’s the doctor
he can handle the shocks

dreaming of the tenderness-the tremble in the hips
of kissing Mary’s lips

dreaming of mercy st.
wear your insides out
dreaming of mercy
in your daddy’s arms again
dreaming of mercy st.
‘swear they moved that sign
looking for mercy
in your daddy’s arms

mercy, mercy, looking for mercy
mercy, mercy, looking for mercy

Anne, with her father is out in the boat
riding the water
riding the waves on the sea

I’m on my way, I’m making it
I’ve giot to make it show, yeah
so much larger than life
I’M going to watch it growing

the place where I come from is a small town
they think so small
they use small words
-but not me
I’m smarter than that
I worked it out
I’ve been stretching my mouth
to let those big words come right out

I’ve had enough, I’m getting out
to the city, the big big city
I’ll be a big noise with all the big boys
there’s so much stuff I will own
and I will pray to a big god
as I kneel in the big church

big time
I’m on my way-I’m making it
big time big time
I’ve got to make it show yeah
big time big time
so much larger than life
big time
I’m going to watch it growing
big time

my parties all have big names
and I greet them with the widest smile
tell them how my life is one big adventure^
and always they’re amazed
when I show them round my house, to my bed
I had it made like a mountain range
with a snow-white pillow for my big fat head
and my heaven will be a big heaven
and I will walk through the front door

big time
I’m on my way-I’m making it
big time big time
I’ve got to make it show-yeah
big time big time
so much larger than life
I’m going to watch it growing
big time big time
my car is getting bigger
big time
my house is getting bigger
big time
my eyes are getting bigger
big time
and my mouth
big time
my belly is getting bigger
big time
and my bank account
big time
look at my circumstance
big time
and the bulge in my big big big big big big big

we do what we’re told
we do what we’re told
we do what we’re told
told to do

we do what we’re told
we do what we’re told
we do what we’re told
told to do

one doubt
one voice
one war
one truth

excellent birds

flying birds
excellent birds
watch them fly, there they go
falling snow
excellent snow
here it comes. watch it fall

long words
excellent words
I can hear them now

this is the picture, this is the picture
this is the picture, this is the picture

I’m sitting by the window
watching the snow fall
I’m looking out
and I’m moving, turning in time
catching up. moving in
jump up! I can land on my feet. look out!

this is the picture, this is the picture
this is the picture, this is the picture

looking out. watching out
when I see the future I close my eyes
I can see it now

I see pictures of people, rising up
pictures of people, falling down
I see pictures of people
they’re standing on their heads, they’re ready
they’re looking out, look out!
they’re watching out, watch out!
they’re looking out, look out!
they’re watching out, watch out!

I see pictures of people
I see pictures of people

love I get so lost, sometimes
days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
when I want to run away
I drive off in my car
but whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are

all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
the heat I see in your eyes

love, I don’t like to see so much pain
so much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive

and all my instincts, they return
and the grand facade, so soon will burn
without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
the heat I see in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes
in your eyes in your eyes

He was a fallen angel from the Tower of Babble
Strung out on the high wire
Another skyline drifter an immaculate stranger
A legend for the wild west end
So when you’re running in the slipstream of the ratrace veterans
Only one thing left to do
Take a breath slide away Quicksilver
The clean cut easy way through

It’s no Easy Rider ain’t no Midnight Cowboy
Took his place at the starting line
Cos he left you behind with his reputation
Lone Ranger still fresh in our minds
So when you’ve worked out the problems and you’ve worked out the angles
And you’ve worked out what you wanted to do
Take a breath slide away Quicksilver
The only style that you ever knew
That you ever knew

Everyone’s wanting a shortcut to somewhere
Everyone’s needing someone to look up to
Everyone’s looking for somebody’s hero
Are they nowhere to be found?
– Are they nowhere to be found?

With the high heels clicking out the avenue semaphore
Tapping out a serious distress
To yesterdays zeros those reluctant young heroes
Need a light to lead them out of this mess
So when you’re running in the slipstream of the ratrace veterans
Only one thing left to do
Take a breath slide away Quicksilver
It’s a clean cut easy way through

He was a fallen angel from the Tower of Babble
Strung up on the high wire
Another skyline drifter an immaculate stranger
A legend for the wild west end
So when you’ve worked out the problems and you’ve worked out the angles
And you’ve worked out what you wanted to do
Take a breath slide away Quicksilver
The only style that you ever knew
That you ever knew

Everyone’s wanting a shortcut to somewhere
Everyone’s needing someone to look up to
Everyone’s looking for somebody’s hero

You call this victory you say the battle’s won
You call this justice when without her there’s no sun
You call this freedom, well you make up your own mind
I call this madness looking from the other side

When this thing started
It was more than just a dream, that kept us warm
Through every crazy moment we pushed on
Searching for the perfect sky
To be as one again
As one together we would fly

You call this victory you say the battle’s won
You call this justice when without her there’s no sun
You call this freedom, well you make up your own mind
I call this madness looking from the other side

Now I must get ready
To face up to what I see now is the truth
I need to see your eyes again on fire
And hear the beating of your heart
We had so little time
So little time for turning back
I know it’s oh so easy to forget
And I know it’s oh so easy to regret
And maybe time can take this fear away
Reminding me you were so sure
You had the key and you had found the door
Hey lady –

You call this victory you say the battle’s won
You call this justice when without her there’s no sun
You call this freedom, well you make up your own mind
I call this madness looking from the other side

You call this victory…

The stars ignite as the sun sets
And disappears in a river of dancing molten gold
In the moon rise the lion steps out tonight

No law, no sin, no rip it up and start again
No tears, no pain, no fear, no more chains

The office walls are closing in
As the telex machines perversely sing ignored
You’re hypnotised and the lion roars within

No law, no sin, no rip it up and start again
No tears, no pain, no fear, no more chains
Why are we here? Not just to live and breathe
I cannot sleep, I need the beast
I need some action, I need destruction
I’ll return to the wild, I’ll return to the child I said
No sense of emotion adrift in the ocean
Here we are knee-deep in stars, knee-deep in stars

City nights caressed in a shroud
All is quiet and the silence is tentatively loud
You kiss the streets as you crawl on your hands and feet

No law, no sin, no rip it up and start again
No tears, no pain, no fear, no more chains

Why are we here? Not just to live and breathe
I cannot sleep, I need the beast
I need some action, I need destruction
I’ll return to the wild, I’ll return to the child I said
No sense of emotion adrift in the ocean
Here we are knee-deep in stars, knee-deep in stars

Moving in the darkness
Phosphorus eyes, jungle pride
A glisten of madness, a wave of sadness
The lion never sleeps, he’s never at peace
He stalks so boldly, so nervous, so coldly
Vicious serenity, perverse intensity
Head bowed stretched proudly, embrace the earth
Same blood, same soul, same breath, same goal

The office walls are closing in, feel the sensation
Telex machines perversely sing raw communication
And you’re hypnotised, a transformation
The lion steps out tonight

And you kiss the damp streets with ease
As you crawl on your hands and feet
Naked is the beast and the beast is forever free
You are the lion, you are the lion of symmetry
Golden warrior savage, savage creature
You are the lion, you are the lion of symmetry

No law, no sin, no rip it up and start again
No tears, no pain, no fear, no more chains…
