There’s a light on the sea
And it’s shining for me
‘Cos I’m going away on the ocean
Sailor boy, they just said,
Grabbed me out of my bed,
Now my head’s getting giddy with motion.

Don’t you worry, Sweetheart,
I won’t be gone long
I’ll be coming home soon –
I promise.
I will carry your love
Deep inside of me –
When the night time comes
I’ll be yours.

There’s a light on the road
As the train pulls it’s load,
Infant soldiers so keen to get at them.
Mama, send me some socks,
‘Cos the rats got the lot
But we’re still singing in two feet of water

Don’t you worry, Sweetheart,
I won’t be gone long
I’ll be coming home soon –
I promise.
I will carry your love
Deep inside of me –
When the night time comes
I’ll be yours.

There’s a light in the sky,
So, at last, it’s goodbye
As we gather our masks at the station.
Pull the throttle out, Jim,
What a beautiful whim,
Now it could be a lengthy vacation.

Don’t you worry, Sweetheart,
I won’t be gone long
I’ll be coming home soon –
I promise.
I will carry your love
Deep inside of me –
When the night time comes
I’ll be yours.

Tracklist

High, dreaming on the seventh floor
I always need a little bit more distraction
I don’t want to work, I’d rather be in the sun
Cos they’re all out there…watch out…see those
Golden bodies passing my way
Golden bodies now summer’s here to stay
So tell me, what you gonna do tonight
Is there some place we can find
Dancing on the beach by moonlight
Til morning
Here under a banana tree
Sitting with my daiquiri rum beside me
It’s clear I’m never gonna give up this life of ease
Cos it’s alright…hold tight…see those
Golden bodies passing my way
Golden bodies now summer’s here to stay
So tell me, what you gonna do tonight
Is there some place we can find
Dancing on the beach by moonlight
Til morning

They saw the flags, it didn’t look so bad
they heard the news and how we could not lose
And they sang with the marching band
The sailors’ wives with anxious eyes
But it impressed them too
They even cheered up as the ships pulled clear
And though it was no-one’s fault
That men went off to war
I saw a thousand faces all along the shore…
The women were watching
So no-one thought of turning back
He didn’t fight for his country’s pride
His life was sold cos it was better than the dole
He even waved as they sent him away
But something’s changed – no this is not a game
She held his hand and it was cold and damp
She couldn’t hide from the feelings inside
Cos in the storm the night before
She heard him calling… goodbye goodbye goodbye
Won’t you give me a smile
I could be gone for a long long while
And though it was no-one’s fault
That he had to go to war
Among a thousand faces all along the shore
A woman was watching
He never thought of turning back

The girl in the gallery,
The way she moves her hair,
Footsteps in the Autumn leaves,
Turning and finding no-one there
Traces of you in the morning light
Traces of you in the night
You’re haunting me still
I don’t even have to try
I always find those…
Traces of you all around my life
Traces of you like a Knife
Twisting inside my heart
You’re tearing my world apart
Don’t torture me
The ring of the telephone
The quizzical hello
The glass in my hand shaking
Lying shattered in the snow
I saw a face in a picture show
Those Alborado eyes calling me
I see trees, I see indigo
I can’t keep up this disguise

Somewhere between the shades of grey
Where the sky meets the ocean
Invisible steel kissed the waves
Here it comes through the rain
Watching alone for birds of prey
Flying high out of the sunset
The picket patrol scans and waits
For a sign overhead
Cutting the spray she pitched and rolled
Unaware that she was chosen
Minutes away, the devil’s own
Had her marked from the rest
Here silicon heart hummed below
Careful eyes checked the readings
Deep in the dark, machines aglow
But nothing showed on the screens
Somewhere between the shades of grey
Where the sky meets the ocean
Invisible steel kissed the waves
Here it comes through the rain

What a situation
I want to take you beside the sea
But I’ve got no transportation
No tyres on the bike and the car’s got a leak
I had an inspiration
Something’s climbing above the trees
It’s silent aviation
No bottlenecks on the A23
Me oh my, watch me fly, through the sky, higher and higher
Eagle eye, one mile high, watch us fly
Love in a hot air balloon
Feelings of elation
Floating around in the atmosphere
It’s pure intoxication
Moet Chandon et personne conduire
Losing elevation
The sands have run out and we’re going down
She stubbed her cigarette out
And now we’re on course for the Eiffel Tower
Me oh my, watch me fly, through the sky, higher and higher
Eagle eye, one mile high, watch us fly
Love in a hot air balloon

Going for broke
There’s nothing around here to make me stay
Going for broke
Who’d be a loser and play it safe?
Roll the dice – spin the wheel
I’m gonna take a chance tonight
I’m gonna make a deal
Going for broke
This is the moment to shoot the moon
Going for broke
I haven’t got the time to waste on you
Roll the dice – spin the wheel
I’m gonna take a chance tonight
I’m gonna make a deal
Nothing to lose
Making my move
Nobody’s gonna use me
Going for broke
There’s something here inside me that won’t lie down
Going for broke
There’s nothing to tie me to this man’s town
Going for broke
One of these days you’re gonna see my face
Going for broke
One of these days you’re gonna know my name

All alone at the station
Oh, how I needed a drink
And as I stared at the table
I was starting to think
I must have fallen for love again
You’ve got me counting the days
Till you come back
I’m wondering if you have changed
In the night when I hold you
Will you whisper my name?
Will you sigh like you used to?
Will it ever be the same?

29 in Highgate, P.R. Queen
So socially unattainable
Down the line in Balham Johnny’s keen
Pursuing the unobtainable
I said Hey, you, up in the clouds
She’s spinning you like a circus wheel.

By moonlight, scheming all his moves
Detectives at her heels

Sally, what’s your game?
What are you trying to do?
Sally, I’m miles away
I can’t take my eyes off you.

Tea with Princes, dinner with the stars
She’s cool amongst High Society
Johnny takes her to a wimpy bar
And acts with perfect sobriety
I said Hey, you, up in the clouds
She’s spinning you like a circus wheel.

Call the Airforce, call the C.I.A.
She won’t escape this time

Sally, what’s your game?
What are you trying to do?
Sally, I’m miles away
I can’t take my eyes off you.

Taking off for ten weeks on the Nile
The Nights will be rich with mystery
Johnny’s swimming with the crocodiles
But he’s gonna teach her some history
I said Hey, you, up in the clouds
She’s spinning you like a circus wheel.

He’s in the gym, he’s on the driving range
It’s make or break this time.

Sally, what’s your game?
What are you trying to do?
Sally, I’m miles away
I can’t take my eyes off you.

Cold streets, everyone’s inside
There’s just me driving through the night
I want your heart, I need your love
I wanted you from the very start
Storm winds swirling in the snow
The last bridge to carry me back home
I want your heart, I need your love
I wanted you from the very start
Nothing matters anymore
I’ve acted like a fool
Cos every time I find a door
It always leads me back to you
I never could resist the smile
Dancing in your eyes
Each town passes in a haze
I’m free now and i can hardly wait
Long roads coming to an end
I’m so close to holding you again

Contenu Well here she comes through the trees
In her saffron robes and dangling beads
She’s a special child, touching the Holy Sea
Where white no longer is pure
And red, the colour of the cure.

In San Francisco she lights a flame
And in Brazilian bars they chant his name
She’s a special child who’s playing the God-find game
Where white no longer is pure
And red the colour of the cure
They’re taking your name away.

I don’t want your guru
I don’t need your paradise
I love you for what you are
Perfection’s not mine

No more family, no more friends
No expectations now, no bitter ends
For she’s a special child, with a castle she must defend
Where white no longer is pure
And red the colour of the cure
They’re taking your name away.

I don’t want your guru
I don’t need your paradise
I love you for what you are
Perfection’s not mine

Well, it’s over now, I think I know
We tried to work it out, someone let go
I’ve got a special place, your bridge to the outside world
Where white no longer is pure
And red the colour of the cure
They’re taking your name away.

I don’t want your guru
I don’t need your paradise
I love you for what you are
Perfection’s not mine’accordéon

Dust drew down the desert night
Stallions kick and moan.
All along the ridge the stormy light
Assailing the fortresses of stone
Father Eli took his watch
His keen eyes fixed right into the sky.
Daybreak found his chair was rocking still
No message could anyone find

Yena had a secret dream,
To touch the stuccoed stars.
From the deep of snow-enchanted woods,
He called them from afar
Hunters by the Deadman’s Spit
All struck dumb, the forest crowned in flame
The dragon rose into the burning air
Then everything lay still again – and so it’s

Oh, my time has come,
I never hoped for something quite like this

Shadows in the creeping mist
The dark beams circled close,
Baronesses played a hand of whist
Unseeing, the monolithic host
Meters racing, dials jammed,
The heat sears, the metals twists and tears
They’re all out on Pan Am 109
The giants melted into thin air…oh hear me

Oh, my time has come,
I never hoped for something quite like this.
Oh, I wait in the night

I’d packed my bags by ten past six
Subscriptions paid and sent
Through the fields to the landing strip
I’ll always wonder what you meant
Diamonds dancing, mountains shake
Wind bellows, the valley struck with gold,
With my photo of the Prince of Wales,
I might not get back till you’re old – and hear it

Oh, my time has come,
I never hoped for something quite like this.

Sunday morning
There’s a cold wind
Down by the Tatterdoo
Rocks are scarred with blue
No one saw her
Like a seabird
Fly high the crested waves
Saw her fall from grace
Solomon Brown
Solomon Brown
Facing the storm alone
Losing your way home
Can you hear me?
There’s a cruel sea
God knows how hard we tried
Save us from this night
Solomon Brown

Facing the storm alone
Losing your way home

I saw you today
And, through the distant years,
It all came back.

Two people, young and sheltered,
So unwary of the snares
We now know well.

You’re now a woman
But still brown and very beautiful,
You haven’t changed.

She took your place – oh, what a face,
Didn’t think I needed you
But I was wrong.

She came and she went out
Upon a voyage, it seems
She’s never coming back

For now you both are gone
It seems so long ago I was a
Happy man.

I saw you today
It didn’t seem as if
You’re coming back.

I saw myself today
It didn’t seem as if
I’m coming back.

And lo upon the hills
I see a shadow pass
To the other side –
We must accept these things.

Oh, how I love you.
Oh, how I love you.

(instrumental)

Now, now as the sun climbs the hills,
Softly she skips on the sand,
Daughter of the breeze
Free, like the swifts of the sky, I see her,
Dim, through the panes of my tears, I see her,
Then she is here, mine, always around me –
Mine till the morning mist comes.

Now, now that the evening must fall,
Weary, she sits by the river,
Kind winds toss her hair,
Free, like the swifts of the sky, I see her,
Dim, through the panes of the tears, I see her.

Then she is here, mine, always around me.
Her warm touch, glad to have found me.
Day-long – walking my kingdom,
Her soft smile speaking of freedom.

Now, now that the evening has gone,
Deep in a slumber she lies,
Golden hair to touch,
Free, like the swifts of the sky, I see her.
Dim, through the panes of my tears, I see her,
Then she’s no more than just an illusion,
Mine till the morning mist comes.

Tracklist

You couldn’t run, you couldn’t hide, they had their spies out on your track
You had some fun, you took a ride, you tried to fit into the pack
But all the time they knew you lied, they knew that you’d be bound to crack
Hospital Carolina

You dreamed of stars, of open cars and surfing out on Malibu
You drank in bars and Miromars, you shot the dice and skimmed the pool
You thought of saving your integrity before it came up for renewal
Hospital Carolina – so who needs Rudolf Steiner?

Let me hear you now
“Um and aargh, um and aargh, um”, was all he told me
I’m catching beriberi and I am feeling so low
“This is much too good for the people” he said
I said “don’t people have minds of their own?”
And it’s better that you agree
In this best of best industries
I was in the midst of a dream
I felt like shouting something obscene

A man appeared, he had a beard, he had a dog right at his feet
I said, “My song?”, he said “It’s long, it’s got no balls”,
I said: “that’s neat, but it took me thirty years to write”,
He said, “your image is incomplete”.
Hospital Carolina

The curtains up, the spotlights on, they’ve got you spitting at the crowd,
A needle match, a little scratch, and you’re above the busy cloud,
Going out and getting in a fight it makes the news, so you’ll be proud
Hospital Carolina – so who needs Rudolf Steiner?

Let me hear you now
“Um and aargh, um and aargh, um”, was all he told me
I’m catching beriberi and I am feeling so low
“This is much too good for the people” he said
I said “don’t people have minds of their own?”
And it’s better that you agree
In this best of best industries
I was in the midst of a dream
I felt like shouting something obscene

They’ve washed you up, they’ve squashed you up,
You find your brain is going bad
You played the game, its all the same, the wisest fools are really mad
You take a gun, to save our sons, and, God, his brain is bullet-proof
And so it’s welcome to the ministry of everlasting truth
Hospital Carolina – so who needs Rudolf Steiner?

Let me hear you now
“Um and aargh, um and aargh, um”, was all he told me
I’m catching beriberi and I am feeling so low
“This is much too good for the people” he said
I said “don’t people have minds of their own?”
Shooting to the top, be a great tin god
Then plummet to obscurity well,
And its better that you agree
In this best of best industries
And it’s better not to presume
Or it’s you that we will consume.

Used to lie awake
Frightened of the dark
Used to count the ghosts
Out in the hallway
Childhood fancies flee
And we learn to trust the night
But I’m haunted by a
Different kind of story.
And through me sleep,
You’re shining, filling my eyes

I want your love
I need your love
I’m holding on
Getting tangled up so badly
You’re giving me such a time
Don’t play the game
Don’t make me feel a fool.
I’m not superstitious,
Your love is the richest
I’m not superstitious,
This could be the special one.

April swept the streets
Pools of rain
She was borne away
Upon a silver steamer
Then, one afternoon
Someone ushered Summer in
I was forced to make a choice
Before the dream had settled
And now you stand your beauty
Filling my eyes.

I want your love
I need your love
I’m holding on
Getting tangled up so badly
You’re giving me such a time
Don’t play the game
Don’t make me feel a fool.
I’m not superstitious,
Your love is the richest
I’m suspicious,
This could be the special one.

She makes her face up in the looking glass
The bell is counting down the time
They’re shouting out to see the princess dance
She takes the key and starts her climb

Lucy, now that you’re famous,
Lucy, you’re still my dream,
Lucy, will you remember?
Lucy, oh Lucy will.

I always knew you’d reach the dizzy heights
And leave me stranded far below
And though it’s years since we were put to flight
My heart is aching still to know

Lucy, now that you’re famous,
Lucy, you’re still my dream,
Lucy, will you remember?
Lucy, oh Lucy will.

And so the lights burn out your name tonight
Back in your room the crowds all leave
Have fame and fortune been the dream you hoped
Or is it just a hollow scheme?

Lucy, now that you’re famous,
Lucy, you’re still my dream,
Lucy, will you remember?
Lucy, oh Lucy will

Side door, you’ll be the one
Side door, I’m telling you, won’t be undone
Side door, we’re coming on through
Side door, so steady so gentle and true
Someone with whom to take a broader view

Lockjaw, you won’t be the one,
Lockjaw, you’re out of date, old-fashioned fun,
Something to make you sleepy in the sun.

Nothing could be be so simple
Give a little bit more, you’ll soon see why
She’s hiding beneath her covers,
You’re playing it a bit cool
Your head’s up high, hang it down
And then love will come and see you
Happily on your way
Happily on your way
Happy to find your way.

Side door, you’re letting me in
Side door, I’m shutting you, keep out of the wind
She’s such a treat and oh, so masculine

Ground floor, you’re letting me down,
Ground floor, you show me the best place in town,
Somewhere discreet, to let our toupees down.

Nothing could be be so simple
Give a little bit more, you’ll soon see why
She’s hiding beneath her covers,
You’re playing it a bit cool
Your head’s up high, hang it down
And then love will come and see you
Happily on your way
Happily on your way
We’re happily on…

Nothing could be be so simple
Give a little bit more, you’ll soon see why
She’s hiding beneath her covers,
You’re playing it a bit cool
Your head’s up high, hang it down
And then love will come and see you
Happily on your way
Happily on your way
We’re happily on your way
Happy to find your way.

Side door, you’ll be the one

Where we are, it’s cold and lonely
There we are, oh God if only
Either one of us would go away

Where we are, is next to nowhere
Even the highway just hates to go there
Nothing in the world could make it stay

Why do we sit here in misery
Is it democracy or just insane?
You and your yen to be high in society
Speaking financially, it looks like rain:
And you say: “boy, you better be nice to me
I’ll get what is coming to you
I’ll take all the property too”.

Where we are is holy deadlock
God had a nerve when he named it wedlock
Couldn’t he have found another way?

Where we are, it’s cold and lonely
There we are, oh God if only
Either one of us would go away

Why do we sit here in misery
Is it democracy or just insane?
You and your yen to be high in society
Speaking financially, it looks like rain:
And you say: “boy, you better be nice to me
I’ll get what is coming to you
I’ll take all the property too”.

There was once a Marionette
Who walked in fields of silk and pearl, so light,
Then the darkness came upon me
I awoke, I could not see her face
Her voice across dark waters spoke
Please turn on the light, it’s growing cold.

She was once my Lady Friend,
I’d loved her countless times before, so light,
Then the darkness crept upon her
I awoke, I could not hear her voice
She left no sign or souvenir
Please turn on the light, it’s cold in here.

Something tells me we’ve burnt out all our boats
Setting sail upon a storm-ridden sea,
And putting faith in the Gods of ancient times
I had believed we could be strong and supreme
She was like a breath of autumn
She fell like the chestnut leaves.

So the moons rise slowly now
In swirling mists I dimly see, darkly,
Trapped in cobwebbed tunnel darkness.
Still as then, I cannot see her face,
Her voice is still accosting me.
Please turn out the lights, the last to leave.

(instrumental)

Say no word
She watched as she waited
By the iron gate
Veiled in black brocade
Tom was all alone
She spoke soft but breathless,
He took the half-a-crown
And thought how strange

Long ago, she knew a man
Who sailed the seas
And gave her a daughter
Through the vanished years
Fate bestowed a lady’s seat
She honoured it with grace
Hid the past and with it me

And now, she is everything to me
Though I was denied her tenderness
Years spent in gloom
I cried in my room
I believed I’d been quite deserted
But now that I find
She gave everything to me
Until it became quite impossible
Scorn upon scandal
Helpless to handle
She’s bitterly breaking now
Why is my dream disturbed?

Cold cut the wind
We pitched as we tossed
From cobblestone to track
Along the old canal
Fierce came the frost
The stone changed to pasture
Could anyone survive?
Has anybody seen?

Long ago a fox found out,
They laid the captain dead at his masthead
Searching everywhere,
Questioning the wind and trees
I beat the empty air,
Knowing it has seen her face
And now, I’d give everything to know
Why my flesh and blood must suffer so
Turning and tossing
From river to crossing
Causing great confusion
If only she knew she was everything to me,
Alone now, somewhere, she’s imploring me
Oh, please forgive me
I’ve been so thoughtless
She’s bitterly breaking now

For, she is everything to me
Though I denied her tenderness
Years spent in gloom
I cried in my room
I believed I’d been quite deserted
But now that I find
She gave everything to me
Until it became quite impossible
Scorn upon scandal
Helpless to handle
I pray we are not too late….

Bleak rose the towers
The rain lashed the horses
We found the gate ajar
Her cloak lay in a heap
The captain’s furled his sails
It comes as no surprise
She’s no longer here.

She drinks the morning air
She takes the utmost care
She’s very good
She sets the flowers aright
She gives the birds their flight
She’s very good – she’s very good to me.
Westminster strolling
Battersea rolling by
And in the night
You will find her at her easel
Drawing ducks and drakes,
Cathedral eyes
She is one of the best
You can be sure of it

Magdalen, of the misty eyes
You didn’t think I’d lose you again
Magdalen, sees the shifting skies
Her majesty makes mighty of men
Magdalen’s gone to Edinburgh spires
And she’s holding your life in her hands

Who holds the world outside?
Who stills the rising tide?
She’s very good
Who weaves the stars display?
Who seals the dwindling day?
She’s very good – she’s very good to me,
Oxford bells ringing,
Phantom choirs singing.

Magdalen of the misty eyes,
The world is waiting at your behest
Magdalen, sees the shifting skies
And old St. Ives stands firm in the West
Magdalen’s gone to Edinburgh spires
And she’s holding your life in her hands.

We watch the autumn glow
We take the evening slow
It’s very good
We hear the vespers rung
And night’s web deftly spun
It’s very good, it’s very good that she
Sleepy car stories;
Lighthouse lives
Gulls crying, “storm!”
And in the night
You will find her in the sistine chapel
Looking down
Cathedral mind
She was here from the start
She has seen all of it…

Magdalen, of the misty eyes
You didn’t think I’d lose you again
Magdalen, sees the shifting skies
Her majesty makes mighty of men
Magdalen’s gone to Edinburgh spires
And she’s holding your life in her hands
Holding our lives in her hands

Now that you don’t know me,
Is it gone forever, past?
Now my rock has crumbled
In the stormy winter blast.
Now the world is darkening
As I watch the farewell train,
Though once she spoke within me –
Strange, may never see you again.

Now the wind is asking:
How a rock so firm can fall.
Then the breeze he murmurs:
She rose not to save death’s call.
Now the leaves are rustling,
Do I hear them speak a name
That waits round every corner –
Strange, may never see you again.

Little girl, lilting lilac,
Autumn Queen, by this quiet brook,
Once you lay, breathing softly –
Now I watch the ashes burn,
A stranger who may not return
Rose with the dawn,
Sailed on the morning tide.
Take this, shining acorn,
Treasure it, through joy and sorrow
When you’re old, tired and lonely,
Open it – a voice will sigh,
A memory that went drifting by
Upon the tide that swept you from my side.

Now the bells are calling,
I must tread the homeward track.
Leave the whispering ripples
For the next part I must act.
Though I gave the whole world,
She remembers not my name.
That star beneath the bright lights –
Strange may never see you again.

Seven long years have gone by,
Scattered on the wind,
Fortunes made and squandered,
Ardour’s beacon growing dim.

Seven long years have now past
Neither glimpse nor word
Of the jewel that vanished
Though the case lay undisturbed.

Seven long years have I spent
Trying to forget,
But no man can banish
Heaven he has sought and met.

Through the trials and the tears
Still I cannot learn,
Ever hopeless dreaming
Perhaps some day you will return.

Dear Friend,
When you are gone,
There’ll always be this song
To remind you of where you once belonged.
Though for you fly way, your face will bless the day.
Safe road through stormy weather, let me hear you say:

The sun will shine again.
New dawns will rise again.
And we’ll be together, till the end.

Oh baby, what am I supposed to do?
Oh baby, when times get rough,
The going’s hard,
I’ll still be here for you.

The sun will shine again.
New dawns will rise again.
And we’ll be together, till the end.
