Bref…

(Face B de Working In Line)

And it really doesn’t matter what you say or what you do
After many years of being oh-so close, it’s over

I know you know, I know
Now that I’m out in the cold with the lonely people
Darling, darling, darling, darling, darling
I never thought that I could feel so all alone
Cos I will be whatever I should be, for you

I know you know, I know
Now that I’m out in the cold with the lonely people
Darling, darling, darling, darling, darling
You know it hurts me so, to be so all alone

And though it’s dark around us, I can see love in your eyes
I’ve covered all the angles, nothing will be a surprise

Cos I know that you know, I know you know
That everything is better in the morning
You’ve got to say that I, say that I
I’m really out of place

Oh, I know I’m a lucky boy
Now that I’m out in the cold with the lonely people
Darling, darling, oh darling, darling, darling
It leaves me cold to think, it’s after all these years

You hear they tell me something, I can see that in your eyes
And though I’ve covered all the angles, will it still be a surprise?

(Rutherford)

(Face B de Against All Odds de Phil Collins)

Did you ever wonder
Just who’s in control
Underneath the surface
Feel a different world

I feel the knife in my shoulder
But it doesn’t hurt at all
I’ll still be the loser
Whichever way I fall

It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake
It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake
It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake
It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake

I don’t think you care
Just what’s goin’ on
They get some information for you
Don’t stay too long

I can do what I want to
And I could say what’s in my mind
I’ve gotta make some decisions
I’m running out of time

It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake
It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake
It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake
It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake
It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake
It’s just a dream that I had and I’m making a big mistake

(Face B de The Living Years)

Don’t stop now, it’s a work of art
Watching you work the route takes away my breath
Show him how, show him what to do
It’s a master-class, baby I’m impressed
She said, “Who do you think you’re talkin’ to?
I treat all my men with a little respect”
I said, “That may be the case baby,
But I know who you are, I don’t wanna be next”

(Ooh) Don’t waste your time, don’t throw those lines at me
(Ooh) Too many friends, too many casualties
(Ooh) You point those eyes just like a loaded gun
(Ooh) I’m not about to be just anyone

Things don’t change, there will always be
Someone the same as you, someone the same as me
That’s okay, there’s no need to rush
Please don’t adjust your philosophy
She said, “Who do you think you’re talkin’ to?
All I ask is just a little respect”
I said, “That may be the case baby,
But I know who you are, I don’t wanna be next”

(Ooh) Don’t waste your time, don’t throw those lines at me
(Ooh) Too many friends, too many casualties
(Ooh) I don’t need this, I need a tender heart
(Ooh) You worked alone, I knew that from the start

(Ooh) Don’t waste your time, don’t throw those lines at me
(Ooh) Too many friends, too many casualties
(Ooh) You point those eyes just like a loaded gun
(Ooh) I’m not about to be just anyone

No, no, no, keep away from me baby
I know who you are, hey, don’t wanna be next
Keep away, you’re wasting your time, you’ll ruin your lines, oh yeah

(Rutherford/Robertson)

(Face B de Get Up et Stop Baby)

I didn’t get it, not at all
When to run or when to crawl
Consistency, that’s not my game
A whisper, then a shout
My youthfulness, I sense today
Forever may have fell away
Reluctantly, I have to say
It’s time we talked things out

Cos I think I’ve got the message
I can hear you loud and clear
You don’t have to spell it out for me, my dear
You don’t have to paint a picture
Or whisper in my ear
Cos I think I’ve got the message, loud and clear

I don’t know what gets into me
Makes me act so foolishly
The steady hand, once in control
Been missing, here of late
I know it’s been a bumpy ride
So up and down, from side to side
I’ll get my head out of the clouds
And try to see things straight

Cos I think I’ve got the message
I can hear you loud and clear
You don’t have to spell it out for me, my dear
You don’t have to paint a picture
Or whisper in my ear
Cos I think I’ve got the message, loud and clear

You don’t have to paint no picture
Or whisper in my ear
I think I’ve got the message loud and clear
Yes, I think I’ve got the message
Loud and clear

(Rutherford/Robertson)

(Face B de Over my shoulder)

I’m thinking, I’m always the last to know
Seems like, I come on a little slow
You disappear before my eyes
How come I was the last to realize
Oh oh oh oh

Hoping, praying for something new
Wishing, that somebody might be you
Saw you standing in the street
Never thought we ever get to meet
Oh oh oh oh oh

Are you for real or just a fantasy
I like to think you just exist for me
So real to me
Whatever I do it only goes to show
It seems to me I’m still the last to know
Oh oh oh oh oh

Seems like, I’m always the least aware
Thinking, yeah
It’s not that I didn’t care
I got nobody else to blame
But it would help me if I knew you’re name
If I knew you’re name

Are you for real or just a fantasy
I like to think you just exist for me
Oh you feel so real
Whatever I do it only goes to show
It seems to me I’m still the last to know

Oh oh oh
I’m always the last to know
Don’t you know I’m thinking
Always the last to know
And I ask you
You disappear before my eyes
How come I’m the last one to realize
Always the last to know
Always the last

One two, one two

You’re dreamin’, your fast Dina has turned sixty-three
You hate readin’, you hate ridin’, you hate history
Your standing in nomans land til you hear the band checking
One two, (one two, one two)

No Chopin, or Beethoven, just a little R N B
’cause, in your dreams, in your dreams, in your dreams
You’ll be up there to
In your dreams, in your dreams, in your dreams
There’ll be lovin’ you

Every weekend it’s always the same
The boys watching Eric, the girls watch in vain
And the young contenders sit down here again
There all down here again
Boys at the front

Your hands spinnin’, with young women, playin’ on your mind
They say traction, but no action, ’cause you don’t have the time
Nobody can make you choose, so you play the blues
‘casue you want to (one two, one two)

Young liein’, you keep tryin’, not to toe the line
‘casue, in your dreams, in your dreams, in your dreams
You’ll be up there to
In your dreams, in your dreams, in your dreams
There’ll be lovin’ you

Every weekend it’s always the same
The boys watching Eric, the girls watch in vain
And all the young contenders sit down here again
Ain’t no trouble going down
Boys at the front

In your dreams, in your dreams, in your dreams
You’ll be up there to
In your dreams, in your dreams, in your dreams
There’ll be lovin’ you

Every weekend it’s always the same
The boys watching Eric, the girls watch in vain
And all the young contenders sit down here again
Ain’t no trouble

Every weekend it’s always the same
The boys watching Eric, the girls watch in vain
And the young contenders sit down here again
Down here again
Boys at the front

Boys at the front
Boys at the front

Let me go said the little boy
And it’s just like me
Let me go said the little boy
And it’s just like me

And they stole my future, and they stole my place
And it’s just like me
But they won’t tell my story, they won’t show my face
And it’s just like me

When every single thing in the world is broken
There’s nothing left worth hanging on to

All I wanted was the tender touch
Never wanted much, but noone belived me
All I needed was a little luck
It would have meant so much, if someone belived me
All I needed was a little time
When we threw that line, well it worked out fine
All I wanted was the tender touch
Now it means so much, cause somebody needs me

Let me go said the little boy
And it’s just like me
Let me go said the little boy
Hey, it’s just like me

And it’s bit by bit, and piece by piece
And it’s just like me
I can’t see no conclusion, I can’t get no relief
And it’s just like me

When every mothers son in the world was running
I had my spirit broken in two

All I wanted was the tender touch
Never wanted much, but noone belived me
All I needed was a little luck
It would have meant so much, if someone belived me
All I needed was a little time
When you threw that line, well it worked out fine
All I wanted was the tender touch
Now it means so much, cause somebody needs me

Let me go
And it’s just like me

And it’s just like me

When every single thing in the world is broken
There’s nothing left worth hanging on to

All I wanted was the tender touch
Never wanted much, but noone belived me
All I needed was a little luck
It would have meant so much, if someone belived me
All I needed was a little time
When you threw that line, well it worked out fine
All I wanted was the tender touch
Now it means so much, cause somebody needs me

All I wanted was the tender touch
Never wanted much, but noone belived me
All I needed was a little luck
It would have meant so much, if someone belived me
All I needed was a little time

All I wanted was the tender touch

(Face B de Another Cup Of Coffee)

Lying sleepless wide awake, wondering how much I can take
You never change
Tired of living with your lies, comes to me as no surprise
You never change

No more tears left to cry
I have to forget you, all over again
No matter how many times that you try
I know that you never change

Like a habit hard to break, I can learn from my misstakes
You never change
Now I feel like I’ve been here before, oh a thousand times or more
But you never change

No more tears left to cry
I have to forget you, all over again
No matter how many times that you try
I know that you never change

All this time I finally realize that it’s all over
There’s no point in taking time to talk it over
There’s to much sorrow, to much pain to go through it all again
Cause you never change

No more tears left to cry
I have to forget you, all over again
No matter how many times that you try
I know that you never

No more tears left to cry
I have to forget you, all over again
No matter how many times you try to explain
I know that you never change

You never change

You don’t know what love is baby, someday you may
You don’t know the hurt you cause
And all the thoughtless things you say

You don’t know, you don’t know

You don’t know what trust is maybe, someday you find
Someone is obsessed by you
Remember to be kind, then you know

What you don’t know

Cut to the chase
Spare me the lie, right to your face with no disguise
I’m not beeing mean, seems you’ve a lot to learn

Well you don’t need to be smart, or try to be cool
Noone suggesting you’re a fool
To your face, to your face, to your face

Baby, you don’t know what love is, someday you may
You don’t know the pain you cause
With all the crazy things you say

You don’t know, oh you don’t know

You don’t know what hope is baby, you have to try
Put your faith in someone, doesn’t mean he’ll make you cry

You don’t know, you don’t know

Put down your guard
Give me a break, just take a chance that’s all it takes
To my face, to my face, to my face

Tell me, You don’t know what love is, someday you may
You don’t know the pain you cause
With all these crazy things you say

You don’t know, no you don’t know

You don’t know what love is baby
But someday you may
And you don’t now the hurt you cause
All the silly thoughtless things you say

You don’t know, you don’t know, you don’t know baby
You don’t know the thoughtless things you say
You don’t know what love is
Someday you may, someday you may

You don’t know

Nobody told me what I had to do to make you happy
Nobody told me what I had to do to make you stay
Somebody help me, how can I get your attention
Somebody tell me, why have we ended up this way

When I first saw you
Darling always from the start, I wanted to be with you
If I could only hold you
Take you in my arms, I can be there too

Tell me again, is there nothing I can do
To make you belive, every word I’m saying is true
Tell me you know what I mean

Nobody told me that I would be running round in circles
Nobody told me I’d just be waiting by the phone
Somebody help me, tell me ther’s no misunderstanding
Somebody tell me, why am I sitting here alone

All I’m asking
Darling look into my eyes, tell me what you see
Is it a dream
Or is it a fading memory, of you and me

Tell me again, is there nothing I can do
To make you belive, every word I’m saying is true
Tell me you know what I mean

Nobody told me what I had to do to make you happy
Nobody told me what I had to do to make you stay
Somebody help me, how can I get your attention
Somebody tell me, why we’ve ended up this way

Nobody told me, Nobody told me
Somebody help me, Somebody help me

Face B de A Beggar On A Beach Of Gold

Help me, help me understand
I still find it hard to comprahend
Tell me, tell me who I am
The one who shared your life or just a friend

I can read your heart like an open book
But I can’t belive the thinhgs you do
I can’t belive the things you do

Show me, show me what you need
Do you really know or do you care

You don’t now me if you think I can’t see
promises you break when I’m not there

I can read your face like an open book
But I can’t belive the things you do
I can’t belive the things you do

When you’re alone and looking out across the years
You’re caught in space, you’re caught in time

And when you add up all the laughter and the tears
I hope your future will be mine

Help me, help me understand
I still find it hard to comprahend
Tell me, tell me who I am
The one who shared your life or just a friend

Just a friend

Life is a Rat Race
Chasing easy money

Life is a Rat Race
Chasing your tail

Life is a Rat Race
All animals could have it,
Running around and never fail

Easy money’s gonna come your way, maybe
Easy money’s gonna break your heart

Life is a Rat Race
Chasing easy money

Life is a Rat Race

It can be in the way you walk
If you don’t know where you’re going to
It’s in the way that you make love to your lady friend
Some people can just sit still
You can tell that they got it
And even if you can’t dance
You can smile while you pretend

Oh yeah, yeah
Look around
It’s everywhere
Oh yeah, yeah
You’ll find
It’s everywhere

It can be in the way you wear your clothes
When you’re going out the night
It can be in the way that you tip that hat
To a passer-by
It can be in the way that you hold someone’s hand, so tight
And it can be in the way that you kiss a long lost friend Goodbye

Oh yeah, yeah
Look around
It’s everywhere
You can almost touch it
Oh yeah, yeah
You’ll find
It’s everywhere

I just remember
It’s not how smooth you move
It’s what you can’t see
That touches somebody’s heart

Just reach out
It’s everywhere

Reach out and touch it

Oh yeah
It’s everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, everywhere

Listen

It can be in the way you that put your arm
Around someone and give them some comfort
It can be in the thing you say
To show you care
It can be in the way that you talk
To your loved one on the telephone
And it can be in the way you run your fingers through your head

Oh yeah, yeah
Look around
It’s everywhere
So strong you can almost touch it
Oh yeah, yeah
You’ll find
It’s everywhere

Check it out people
You’ll know
It’s everywhere
Ain’t no mystery
You can find it
If you’re looking
You know
It’s everywhere

Remember
It’s what you can’t see
that touches somebody’s heart

Just reach out
It’s everywhere

Yeah, yeah,
It’s everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, everywhere
It’s everywhere

Just catch the feeling people
You know
It’s everywhere

Reach out and touch it
Reach out and touch it
It’s everywhere

Yeah, yeah
It’s everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, everywhere

(Released as bonus track from the Dance Into The Light Sessions)

Lying awake
I look out my window
Wondering to myself
If this madness will ever seize
Oh but I see a light
I see her crack of hope
And I close my eyes

They can’t tear this love apart
Though they try
Should we believe in the things they say ?
Oh but how would they know ?

‘Cos in another time
Another place
It might have been so different

Oh we set aside the world
We’ll laugh
We’ll show them all
If we can float across the stream
Just smile and float across the stream
We’ll see it all pass us by

You know what ?
Oh they don’t know
‘Cos in another time
In another time another place
It might have been so different
Oh but here we are
And here we’ll stay
We’ll set aside the world

We can float across the steam
We can float across the stream
Find a path we want
I know we will
I know we will
Find a path we want
Reach across the hill
And reach across the hill
We gonna go
Believe me, we gonna go
We gonna go
We gonna make it
We gonna make it
‘Cos nothing can stop us now
No, no, nothing can stop us now
We’re gonna make it
Yes, we’re gonna make it, girl
Because nothing can come between us
Not now, nothing can come between us
They try so hard
We can do it
We can do it
We can do it if we want it
We can do it girl
Oh we can do it
We’re gonna cross the street
Find a path for you all

Lying awake
I look out of my window
Wondering to myself
Will this madness ever seize
Oh but I see a light
I see her carck of hope
And I close my eyes
I close my eyes
Nothing can come between us now
We close our eyes
Close our eyes

You’ve been in love that little bit too long
You’ve been in love and I think that you know
You’ve been in love it’s time to move on
You’ve been in love and it’s starting to show

She’s getting to used to your face, getting too used to your smile
She’s saying the same things every morning before you leave her
You’d better run, find out what’s going through her mind
You’d better look out, cos he’s not far behind
You’ve been in love that little bit too long
You’ve been in love and I think that you know
You’ve been in love it’s time to move on
You’ve been in love and it’s starting to show

Suddenly she’s trying to please you, you start to think she’s acting strange
And after all these years she wears make-up in the morning
You’d better run, find out what’s going through her mind
You’d better look out, cos he’s not far behind

Did you really believe she’s doing it all for you?
Oh, can’t you see, there’s somebody else
You never showed it, you should have known it

You’ve been in love, yeah you’ve been in love
You’ve been in love, yeah you’ve been in love

Going round singing all those love songs, songs you haven’t heard for years
You’re gonna have to ask her why she’s so happy
You’d better run, find out what’s going through her mind.
But it may be too late, and I know why

You’ve been in love that little bit too long
You’ve been in love and I think that you know
You’ve been in love it’s time to move on
You’ve been in love and it’s starting to show
You’ve been in love that little bit too long
You’ve been in love, I think that you know
You’ve been in love it’s time to move on
You’ve been in love and it’s starting to show
To show, show, you’ve been in love, oh oh

If you see the light on in the window of my room
I’ll be looking out though the shades are drawn
If you should hear someone quietly calling out for your hair
Don’t be alarmed it might just be me

Take me with you, take me there
I’ll go with you anywhere
Show me all the things you know
Are you with me, are you there
I’ll be with you everywhere
Show me all the things you know, you know, you know, you know

The sun always seems to shine on the other side of the mountain
The water is clearer on the other side of the hill
All that water comes to me, ooh as I lay down
Where I am is where I should be

Take me with you, take me there
I’ll go with you anywhere
Show me all the things you know – oh
Are you with me, are you there
I’ll be with you everywhere
Show me all the things you know

I’m holding them close to me
All those things I learned
But there’s no questions and answers
So we watch the candle burn, on and on

So the candle burns all night, burns so bright until morning
When I wake I find myself alone
So if you see me – are you here? – hear someone cry, calling out
Rescue me and take me home – take me home

Take me with you, take me there
I’ll go with you anywhere
Show me all the things you know – you know
Take me with you, take me with you
Take me with you, take me with you
Show me all the things you know
Please show me

Please take me, show me
Just take me, show me…

They come from miles around just to hear him play
He’s on the same street corner almost every day
And there’s always a crowd wherever he goes
And when he blows his horn, well everybody knows

I only wanna see him play
All the girls ‘n’ boys they wanna see him play
Nobody else they wanna see him play
And he brings a tear to the eye
He’ll make you smile of make you cry
And nobody asks him why
Cos they just wanna see him play

They come from every way, every night
He’s got a band so out there, it’s outta sight
And the boys in the dancehall are rocking in the aisle
The girls up front – they wanna see him smile

I only wanna see him play
All the girls ‘n’ boys they wanna see him play
Nobody else they wanna see him play
And he brings a tear to the eye
He’ll make you smile of make you cry
Ooh, nobody asks him why
Cos they just wanna see him play

Yeah, he’s the man with the horn
Ooh they wanna see him play
Yeah, he’s the man with the horn
Ooh they wanna see him play
Yeah, he’s the man with the horn
You know they wanna see him, they wanna see him
They wanna, they wanna, they wanna see him play

(Play it, Don!)

Ah, station to station, coast to coast
Well you can hear all his records on the radio
He makes every evening feel like Saturday night
And if you’re happy or sad he’ll make the feeling right

I only wanna see him play
All the girls ‘n’ boys they wanna see him play
Nobody else they wanna see him play
And he brings a tear to the eye
He’ll make you smile of make you cry
Ooh, nobody asks him why
Cos they just wanna see him play

Yes, you know they wanna see him, they wanna see him
Chow, they know they wanna see him, they wanna see him
They wanna, they wanna, they wanna see him play
They wanna see him play, play, play, play
Oh, all the girls and boys wanna see him play
All the girls and boys wanna see him play
All the girls and boys…

Well I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so patiently
Out of the blue you call
You’re leaving him to be with me now

Now maybe I’m right, or maybe I’m wrong
Oh, I gotta know now
I’ll take what you got, so you’d better hold on
You’d better believe it

Cos that’s how I feel when I’m in your arms
That’s how I feel when I’m with you
You make me feel like never before
That’s how I feel when I’m with you

He doesn’t treat you good
He doesn’t say the things that I say
So when he turns around
You’re gonna stab him in the back and then walk away

Now maybe I’m right, or maybe I’m wrong
Oh, I gotta know now
I’ll take what you got, so you’d better hold on
You’d better believe it

Cos that’s how I feel when I’m in your arms
That’s how I feel when I’m with you
You make me feel like never before
That’s how I feel when I’m with you

You’ve been away too long
And now you’re coming home
But I won’t believe it until
I’m holding you tight, tight, tight tonight

Now maybe I’m right, or maybe I’m wrong
Oh, I gotta know now
I’ll take what you got, so you’d better hold on
You’d better believe it

Cos that’s how I feel when I’m in your arms
That’s how I feel when I’m with you
You make me feel like never before
That’s how I feel when I’m with you

That’s how I feel when I’m in your arms
(That’s how I feel when I’m with you) ooh, yeah
That’s how I feel when I’m in your arms
That’s how I feel when I’m with you
That’s how I feel when I’m with you

With a young man, with his heart on his sleeve
Had the body of a man, and a trust of a child
He never meant to hurt anybody
But he broke some hearts along the way

Ooh, it’s all over
Ooh, it’s all done
Ooh, it’s all over
Or, has it just begun?

All that he spoke came right from his heart
Though some had been hurt by the things he had said
Go walking in the long grass to find his peace
Sometimes it’d grow so tall he’d lose his way

Ooh, now it’s all over
Ooh, it’s all done
Ooh, it’s all over
Or, has it just begun?

Ooh, it’s all over
Ooh, it’s all done
Ooh, it’s all over
Or, has it just begun?

I look out the window every day, I see the world go by
Watching I sit and wait for you
Just hoping you’ll catch my eye
You see me stare but I don’t care
I like the way you smile
One day I’ll get to talk to you
Ooh, right now well I’m too shy

But in my world of make believe
You’re the one what I need, oh, oh…

I could imagine me with you
But it’s an impossibility
I’d love to try to realise, I gotta deal with reality
But if you turn my way, I’d look away, ooh even face-to-face
And deep inside me, inside my mind
Someone else is trying to take my place

But in my world of make believe
You’re the one what I need, oh, oh…
Oh, come with me, I’ll show you everything
Come with me, ooh
Come with me, I’ll show you everything
It could be, come along with me and let me take you there, oh, oh…

I look out the window every day, I see the world go by
Watching I sit and wait for you
Ooh, just hoping that you’ll walk by
But if you turn my way, I’d look away, ooh even face-to-face
And deep inside, ooh in my mind
Someone else is trying to take my place

In my world of make believe
You’re the one what I need, oh, oh…

Come with me, ooh
Come with me, I’ll show you everything
It could be, come along with me and let me take you there, oh, oh…

All of my life, come with me, come with me, come with me…
All of my life…
I like the way you smile
All of my life…

I don’t want to see you go
There’s too much to say.

But it’s gone on for too long
I know how much it hurts to hear
You show it and I know it
So there’s no reason for the tears.

I don’t want to see you go
Don’t want to see you cry.

‘Cos I’ve been there and I know it
How much it hurts being left behind
If you hold on, just be strong
There’ll come a time.

All things will come to pass, you know
All things will come around

I see your bags are packed
I guess that means you won’t be back
There’s nothing left could keep me chained
To get you, bring you back again.

If you hold on, won’t be long
We’ll find our time and place once more
Just hold tight, it’s alright
We’ve been here before.

All things will come to pass, you know
All things will come around.

But if you don’t want to stay, say goodbye
My number’s on your wall
‘Cos I’ve been there and I’ve seen it
It’s there beside those other guys
So keep it, you may need it
There’s no more reason for the lies.

(Phil Collins demo version released as B-side of
“We Wait And We Wonder” single, 1994)

Well it was one of those great stories
that you can’t put down at night
the hero knew what he had to do
and he wasn’t afraid to fight
the villain goes to jail, while the hero goes free
I wish it were that simple for me.

And the reason that she loved him
was the reason I loved him too
and he never wondered what was right or wrong
he just knew – he just knew.

Shadows and shape mixed together at dawn
but by time you catch them simplicity’s gone
and so we sort through the pieces
my friends and I
searching through the darkness to find
the breaks in the sky.

And the reason that she loved him
was the reason I loved him too
and he never wondered what was right or wrong
he just knew – he just knew.

And we wonder, yes we wonder
how do you make sense of this
when the hero kills the maiden
with his kiss – with his kiss.

Well it was one of those great stories
that you can’t put down at night
the hero knew what he had to do
and he wasn’t afraid to fight
the villain goes to jail, while the hero goes free
I wish it were that simple for me
– if it were that simple for me.

(Collins)

(Released as B-side of “We Wait And We Wonder” CD single, 1994)

When I saw him last
he had that look in his eyes
I said, “Do you need to talk?”
he said, “No.”
So I called him up, asked him again and I waited a while –
he began to speak, then he started to cry

You know some things are best left unspoken
and some things just never work out
and sometimes, seems you try and you try and whatever you do
There’s a fix that you’re in, and you just can’t get out
he said, “I need your help, I need it now
Give me the strength to go on”

Though I didn’t know what
I knew that something was wrong
but he still had his pride
he’d tell me in time
Well this feeling inside
kept eating at me
I was losing a friend, and I had to know why

When I heard the voice on the phone, I knew it was bad news
so I rushed to be by his side
and we said goodbye for the last time
I gently hugged him, and kissed him goodbye
he whispered, “I need your help, I need it now
Give me the strength to go on.”

We were always laughing
I just remember laughing, mama
We were always laughing

Oh I need your help, I need it now
Give me the strength to go on

Though as time goes by, and it all becomes clear
we can see the deceit, we see the lies
So I asked myself, over and over, and over again
What did they know? What did they hide?
Fools, leading the innocent blindly
Fools, turning away

And I know that
when I think of my friend with that look in his eyes
and if they told the truth, he might be here today
I need your help, I need it now
Just give me the strength to go on, on

I remember the laughing
We were always laughing

Oh no – it’s just strength we need now
Just the strength to go on…

Just set your sight high, look
’em right in the eye and take it
And make a big big big noise.
Don`t ask why
Just take it wise and making it
Make that a big big big big noise.

You can feel it in the air
Feel it everywhere
There`s a spirit moving
At just look, it`s all around you
Just take a look around you people stars ??? to loose it
Cos if you wanted you gotta go get it
Just to listen up
if there`s something that you need
You better believe

Just set your sight high, look
’em right in the eye and take it
And make a big big big noise.
Don`t ask why
Just take it wise and making it
Make that a big big big big noise.

Better make your play
Don`t let her thing like right or wrong, get it
Cos there`s nothing to it if you just if you reach out and do it, it`ll be ok
Just catch yourself a piece of the action
Just to listen up
if there`s something that you need
You better believe

Just set your sight high, look
’em right in the eye and take it
And make a big big big noise.
Don`t ask why
Just take it wise and making it
Make that a big big big big noise.

Cos if you wanted you gotta go get it
Just to listen up
if there`s something that you need
You better believe

Just set your sight high, look

And make a big big big noise.
Don`t ask why
Just take it wise and making it
Make that a big big big big noise.

Dreams will all come true
Being here with you
And time will fly
Caring each day more
Than the day before
Till spring rolls by
And when the springtime has gone
Will my love linger on

‘Cause I’ll be loving you
Always
With a love that’s true
Always
When the things that you plan
Need a helping hand
I will understand
Always, always

Days may not be fair
Always
But that’s when I’ll be there
Always
Not for just an hour
No, no, not for just a day
Not for just a year
Oh but always

Days may not be fair
Always
But that’s when I’ll be there
Always
Not for just an hour
No, no, not for just a day
Not for just a year
Oh but always

Until forever is through
Until there’s just me and you
Always
Oh always

While the city starts to sleep
She’s watching over you
Smoke hangs on the downtown skyline
Moon pushes through
But some people’s on fire tonight
Wind rushing round their feet
Someone’s gonna sleep well tonight
Word is on the street

So high flyer, high flyer
Fly high tonight
Fly angel, fly higher
Fly here tonight

It’s a tribal thing we’re seeing
War paint on the face
A question of territory, pride and space
People strutting and feathers flying
It’s a sorry scene
Someone’s sleeping well tonight
Word is on the street

So high flyer, high flyer
Fly high tonight
Fly angel, fly higher
Fly high tonight

Brother, my brother
Don’t let me down again
Mother oh mother
Wipe your tears again

High flying bird embraced him
Held him to her breast
Soft feathers brushed his face
Finally came to rest
Gently rocking him to and fro
He quietly went to sleep
Someone’s found a place of peace tonight
Word is on the street
So high flyer, high flyer
Fly high tonight
Fly angel, fly higher
Fly away tonight

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Running at the door
She stopped to brush her hair
Glancing up and down at her reflection

Did she look ok ?
Just in case he looked away
She thought of some excuses for conversation

She knew that he was cute
She’s seen him yesterday
Talking and laughing with his sister

How long does he stand ?
Will he still be there ?
She satisfied herself with this
But knew she’d only stare

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

All the night before
His name was everywhere
Though she didn’t know exactly what to call him

Inventing stories
To pass away the time
Until she’d find the courage to confront him

Managing to mention him
In everything she said
She knew she never felt like this before

How long was he staying ?
Will he still be there ?
Oh she knew the time had finaly come
She’d ask him then and there

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

In a second her heart was broken
She couldn’t believe her eyes
Her pulse was beating faster every minute

Looking out at the window
A car was driving off
His holidays was over, the romance with it

Running out the door
Tears in her eyes
She didn’t know what to say or what to do

Did he leave an address
Would he be back next year
Slowly the sunshine started poking through

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

Hey, now
Hey, now
Seems we’re looking at some sunshine

They say every action
Has an opposite and an equal one
For each little action
It’s like you’re looking back at a loaded gun

So don’t fire the first shot
Before you think it through
When you can hear above the push and shove
Then it’ll all come back to you
Yes it all comes back to you

You don’t remember
What you did to get where you are right now
You don’t recall it
But you must’ve done something wrong somehow

You can’t be an island
In anything that you do
You can put it out – a scream and shout
But it’ll all come back to you
Yes it’ll all come back to you

Your reflection
Looks into your face
Putting you back in your place
As you ride for the fall
He will always be calling your name
Cause when it’s all said and done
He and you are both one and the same

One word in anger
And another comes back to break your day
One voice of reason
And everybody will hear the things you say

One punch in frustration
Could be leaving you black and blue
But if you give your heart
Wake up, get smart
Then it’ll all come back to you
Yes it’ll all come back to you

Your reflection
Looks into your face
Putting you back in your place
As you ride for the fall
He will always be calling your name
When it’s all said and done
He and you are both one and the same

So don’t fire the first shot
Before you think it through
When you can hear above the push and shove
Then it’ll all come back to you
Yes it’ll all come back to you

Extra tracks - Live at the Rainbow 1973

1 : Dancing with the Moonlit Knight

2 : The Cinema Show

3 : I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)

4 : Firth of Fifth

5 : More Fool Me

6 : The Battle of Epping Forest

7 : Supper’s Ready

Que signifie cet horrible fade out à la fin de Man on the corner ? Où sont passés Me and Virgil et Match of the Day, toutes deux faces b ?

Well there’s a place where two worlds collide
The pile of stone against the pull of the tide
You can stay with your feet on the ground
Or step into the water, leave the dry behind

On the shoreline
Meet me on the shoreline
Where you can only swim if you try

Well, if there’s somewhere on the other side
It might be better, it might be as bad
Someday soon you’ll have to make a move
Cos you can’t stay forever, ah just waiting

On the shoreline (on the shoreline)
Meet me on the shoreline (on the shoreline)

Take me over, lead me through

Well can you take me there, to the other side
Where everything is new, uncertain and strange
Don’t ever let me go till we’re there
I don’t know what it is I’m looking for
And until it’s found I won’t be sure…

Well, there are squares in the game of life
When you can keep on moving or turn aside
Yes, there are times when you have to decide
To put your feet in the water, or stay

On the shoreline (on the shoreline)
Meet me on the shoreline (on the shoreline)
Where you can only swim if you try
I’ll be there – oh
On the shoreline (on the shoreline)
I’ll be there on the shoreline (on the shoreline)
Where you can only swim if you try
I’ll be there
I’ll be there – oh
Yes, I’ll be there
I’ll be there…

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

1991. Released as B-side of “Jesus He Knows Me” single, 1992.

In life there are those decisions
Which direction you should take
It’s only later that you realize
All those simple mistakes you make
I don’t like being alone
Don’t wanna be by myself
But since you’ve gone that’s all I can think oF
I can’t think of nothing else

Oh, I said I’m sorry, soon I give it up
You know I’m sorry, soon I give it up
You know I’m sorry, soon I give it up
Cos my heart’s on fire
My heart’s on fire

Woh can you take me there
Oh, come back and take me there
Cos I need to be with you
Be there with you

Yes there is no denying
Our love is not untrue
I know I’ve lied so many times before
But deep down there’s only you
I need you here by my side
Together our love could grow
But first you have to believe that I want you
More than you’ll ever know

Woh, I said I’m sorry and I give it up (give it up)
You know I’m sorry, soon I give it up (give it up)
You know I’m sorry, soon I give it up (give it up)
Cos my heart’s on fire
My heart’s on fire

Woh can you take me there
Oh, come back and take me there
Cos I need to be with you
Be there with you

(give it up, give it up, give it up…)

With it we take our chances
What will be will be
But I don’t care what the people may think
Just as long as you’re here with me
Don’t like being alone
Don’t wanna be by myself
And since you’ve gone, well that’s all I can think of
I can’t think of nothing else

Woh, I said I’m sorry and I give it up (give it up)
You know I’m sorry soon I give it up (give it up)
You know I’m sorry soon I give it up
Cos my heart’s on fire
My heart’s on fire

Woh can you take me there
Oh, come back and take me there
Cos I need to be with you
Be there with you
You, be there with you

Hearts on fire
Hearts on fire
Hearts on fire
My heart’s on fire
Hearts on fire, hearts on fire…

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

What was it you said to me
Back in the days when things looked fine
’bout how we would be together
Until we left the earth behind
Oh, it’s funny how things can change
Cos there was a time I thought I’d be the one
Who’d leave and start again
But now I’d stay forever

Ooh my hopes are as the leaves upon the water
Just sunk in the night
And though I know you couldn’t care, you oughtta
Ah, the end of a life
Or maybe when you’re older, and you’re thinking back
You might recall
Now did I act carefully, did I do right?
Or were we meant to be, all of our lives
In love and harmony, all of our lives?

So now, take my hand
Come, hold me closely
As near as you can
Believing all that we could be
And all that we have been
And all that we are

Everyday seems summertime
The river flow with wine
Ooh when you were here with me
I wish we’d stayed that way forever

Oh my hopes are as the leaves upon the water
Just sunk in the night
And though I know you couldn’t care, you oughtta
Ah, the end of a life
Or maybe when you’re older, and you’re thinking back
Well you might recall
Now did I act carefully, did I do right?
Or were we meant to be, all of our lives
In love and harmony, all of our lives?

So now, take my hand
Come, hold me closely
As near as you can
Believing all that we could be
And all that we have been
And all that we are

Oh my hopes were as the leaves upon the water
Ah, sunk in the night
And though I know you couldn’t care, you oughtta
Oh, the end of a life
And maybe when you’re older, and you’re thinking back
Oh, you might recall
Now did I act carefully, did I do right?
Or were we meant to be, all of our lives
In love and harmony, all of our lives?

Paperlate paperlate
Paperlate paperlate

Paperlate, oh I’m sorry but there is no one on the line
Paperlate, oh I’m sorry but rest easy no news is good news

Ooh it’s too easy to live like clockwork
Tick tock watching the world go by
Any change would take too long
So dry your eyes
Ooh it’s too easy to live in a cold sweat
Just sitting dripping in pools below
You can wipe your face
Kill the pain
But the fever won’t go, no no

Paperlate
Pull it together now
Put your feet back on the ground
Paperlate
Ooh don’t worry now
You’re not alone
Look around you
Paperlate
Ooh I’m sorry but there’s no one on the line
Paperlate
Ooh I’m sorry but rest easy no news is good news

Ooh it’s too easy to compute your future
Taking no risks and playing too safe
Any change would take too long
So dry your eyes
Ooh it’s too easy to talk about rocking the boat
Making changes and changing track
But you’d better not lock that door
Cos you’ll be coming back

Ah you’re breathing faster
Silence the only sound
There’s no need to be nice on the way up
Cos you’re not coming down

Paperlate paperlate
Paperlate paperlate
Paperlate paperlate
Paperlate paperlate

Paperlate
Ooh I’m sorry but there’s no one on the line
Paperlate
Oh I’m sorry but rest easy no news is good news…

The girl from all those songs
Who made everything feel right
She came in like an angel, into your lonely life
And filling your world with light
Oh, and everybody told you “you’re oh so lucky”

Curtains part revealing a country scene
Clothed in green and brown
Evidence of autumn
And recent rain
On a winding lane, a byway
Walking on that road is a certain girl
In all the world the one
Guaranteed to move you and turn your head
When all’s been said and done

The girl from all those songs
Who made everything feel right
She came in like an angel, into your lonely life
And filling your world with light
Oh, and everybody told you “you’re oh so lucky”

The night is clear but cool
Ooh maybe dawn is breaking as you turn to find her gone
Then you see the note
Ooh you cannot believe it
And you think you’ll go insane…

But that was many years ago
And though the pain is dim
A something still remains
Though you hardly can recall
Her face or form
Her memory lingers on
Ooh she made everything feel right
She came in like an angel (in like an angel),
Into your lonely life (into your life)
And filling your world with light
Oh and everybody told you “you’re oh so lucky”

Ooh yeah
You know I never wanted to be closer
And I’ll still be here until it’s over
No, no I never wanted to be closer
But you’ll be back, I could’ve told you

Well I always knew
Yes I could see it coming
Your ambitious streak
You always want things beyond your reach
Well now you’ve got what you wanted
And you’re free to be the things
You always said you’d be
You’re up there looking down
Tell me what do you see – oh

Cos you know
You know I never wanted to be closer
And I’ll still be here until it’s over
No, no I never wanted to be closer
Yeah, but you’ll be back, I could’ve told you

Well it seems to me
That you’ve got to fight for yourself
In this world we live in
It’s dog-eat-dog and never give in
Why worry when you’re holding the aces
Don’t throw it away cos you know
I’d rather be you than me
Up there looking down
Tell me what do you see – oh

hey hey yeah

Ooh yeah
You know I never wanted to be closer (never wanted)
And I’ll still be here ’til it’s over
No, no I never wanted to be closer (never wanted)
Ooh but you’ll be back, I could’ve told you

It’s been a long time coming
But at last we seem to be moving on, straight ahead
We’re finally getting something done
Time flies and ‘fore you know it
You’ll be getting closer to where
You always knew you’d be
Up there looking down
Tell me what do you see – oh

Cos you know
No, no I never wanted to be closer (never wanted)
I’ll still be here until it’s over
No, you know I never wanted to be closer (never wanted)
Yeah but you’ll be back, I could’ve told you

hey hey yeah…

INSIDE

Brother Seems they’re letting him out next year
He’s behaving himself, I hear
Governor Conway says it will be fine
Just as long as he can tow the line

It’s the same old story
But it says here “Mum you’re not to worry”
‘Cos some you lose and some you lose

At this party, he was on his own
All he did was say he’d take her home
But it seems they didn’t go straight there
‘cos on the porch, she told him,
“put your hand here”

Yes it’s that same old story
They told her mum she’s not to worry

Police “If what she says is so,
we’ll never let him go!”

Him “Never a word could be heard
Not even the sound of a bird
Singing it over again, telling a different story
Never the same as before
See the summer going out by the door”
Brother And now that you’ve paid for those lies
Get another disguise

“It’s twenty years now since our Kid came free
Oh I remember August ’53
But it wasn’t quite like they said
With that behind you, you can’t plan ahead
Yes it’s the same old story
They say you’re free, but don’t worry
What they said’s not so
They’ll never let you go!”

Him “Never a word could be heard
Not even the sound of a bird
Singing it over again, telling a different story
Never the same as before
See the summer going out by the door”
Brother And now that you’ve paid for those lies
Get another disguise

You are terrified by the smallest sound
Because you live your life in such a sheltered world
As do those who surround you
Well I have seen you stung by poisonous flies
And you suffer much too much from their bites
There you sit in your comfort watching other people get caught by the
storm

Many a thing that used to be a secret
Has become so talked about
Not worth a second thought
There’s different kinds of secrets now
Times change, it’s not enough to say
It seemed a good idea a hundred years ago
You think it’s not your problem
It really doesn’t matter at all

Every stone that’s thrown must fall to the ground
But you don’t give a thought to where they might come down
You are feeding the fire over which you’ll be roasted

Anywhere that they don’t speak the same
In any place that they don’t think the same
You think it’s not your problem
No no

You think it’s not your problem
It really doesn’t matter at all
Oh…

Maybe it’s not your fate to be a leader of men
But you just leave it all to someone else and complain
You could be so much stronger, but it really doesn’t matter any longer
Cos you’re feeding the fire over which you’ll be roasted
Cos you’re feeding the fire over which you’ll be roasted

I see your smiling face, by the open door
There’s the morning light
Shining in your hair, and in your eyes

And just a little way behind that smile of yours
I see another one, oh so far away
If only for one second, I could hold you close to me
When the Master calls for me again
There’s nothing I can say, or I can do

Goodbye, my love
Time has come to say farewell
I hear the call again
Goodbye to the world
I’ve sheltered for so long
Oh there’s so much my love, that I can never say

And in a little while, in a little while
There’s nothing left to see

As the years go by and I have not returned
And the night has come, falling all around
Ooh if you count the stars you’ll know
How many have gone out
And when the Master calls for me again
There’s nothing that I can say
Or I can do

Stand in the sun
Shut your eyes and feel the world
It’s changing every day
Goodbye my love
Each day will seem so long
Ooh there’s so much I feel, that I can never say

I can’t see you
I can’t feel you anymore
I’ve just a memory of that open door

When they went to bed that night no-one would have believed
That in the morning light would not be there
The dark hung heavy on the air like the grip of a jealous man
No place was there known to have been spared
Then panic took control of minds as fear hit everyone
The day the light went out of the daytime sky

Artificial light could hardly penetrate the gloom
Nothing out of reach could be observed
Looting, pillage, murder, rape became the rule of that day
Who hit him no one knew or whom he hit
Cars were caught in pileups and the planes could never land
The day the light went out of the daytime sky

“Now I can rest here after my journey
Now I can feed here before I continue”

Some there were who’s heads were clear who sought, tried to find
The nature of this deadly foe, the dark
It seemed the sun was still somewhere though hidden from their sight
By something, though amorphous, yet alive
And so they looked for ways to rid themselves of the parasite
The day the light went out of the daytime sky

“Now I can rest here after my journey
Now I can feed here before I continue”

They tried in many fruitless ways to see the noonday sun
By blasting with their missiles through the dark
But soon a kind of sleepy state came over everyone
Till nothing seemed to stir or even breathe
And when the darkness chose to disappear not many had survived
Then came a shadow – another had arrived
And again the light went out the daytime sky

She packed her bags and dressed
Long before the sunrise
No one knew
She told them many times
About how she would teach them
And now it’s time
Standing quietly by the door
Her face is numb with fear
She stops and then goes on
“Leave forever – it’s now or never”

Quickly walking down the street
It’s cold and grey, dawn’s breaking
She don’t mind (she don’t mind)
Why she feels so grown up now
Her life is just beginning
She don’t know (she don’t know)
She’s standing in the pouring rain
Her make-up’s running down
She wonders now she’s here
“Where will I go? Who do I know?”

Now, now she’s not quite so sure
I may be wrong but home seems so much more friendly now
And they might worry but she doesn’t want them to
Cos causing pain, that’s not the thing that she set out to do

So she’s back in bed before
Anyone can miss her
She feels good (she feels good)
Knowing the chance was there
Deciding not to take it
That’s her choice (that’s her choice)
She’s still awake, her mum comes in
“Me and dad, we’ve had a chat
And we’re sorry for the things we said
Please forgive us – you wouldn’t leave us?”

(Banks/Collins/Rutherford)

Who put fifty tons of shit on the Foreign Office roof?
Who suffers from nine known diseases?
Who gets up in the morning when the sun comes up
And makes their beds, paper clips, bus tickets
All around their heads?
Who congregate around Trafalgar Square
Taking pot shots at the tourists?
Oh you’ve got to watch out
When you wander round the square in the morning
Cos they’re everywhere, they’re everywhere

Here we have an honest man
A civil servant to boot
He lived high up in the Ministry
And when he wished to make a point
He knew just what to do
His window ledges were all covered in grease
“I want them out of here”

He said to me, “I want them gone”
Because you see – Oh don’t you see
None of us are getting any younger
You’ve got to follow your nose
And if it tells you that you’ve got to go
Well that’s because, they’re everywhere,
They’re everywhere

So we called in those men, those horrible men
We set them to work on the rooftops
You see their van is very plain
And I know they’re too ashamed
To wear their by appointment badges anymore
Sometimes they use vaseline, sometimes they use the pill
I’ve often seen them with a gun
But as the years go by, old habits seem to die
And nowadays they knockatize them all
Oh you’ve got to watch out
As you wander round the square in the morning
Oh they’re everywhere, they’re everywhere

(Banks/Collins/Hackett/Rutherford)

Released as B-side of singles “Ripples”, 1976 and “Your Own Special Way”, 1977.

Stepping out the back way
Hoping nobody sees
Feeling can be easy
Think how I feel

What will you say?
What will you do?
Why can’t you see?
It’s yourself I love

Don’t you know I’d like some answers
You could give me a call
I hardly know the reason
And I really feel no good at all

Where will you go?
Where will you be?
Where can I try?
It’s yourself I love

Quelle direction on devrait prendre

Ensemble notre amour pourrait grandir

(laisse tomber, laisse tomber, laisse tomber…)

Alors essuie tes yeux

Alors essuie tes yeux

Eh bien il me semble

Ca a été long à venir
Tu as toujours su que tu serais
Là-haut regardant en bas
Dis-moi ce que tu vois, oh

Car tu sais

Oh je me souviens Août 1953

Released as B-side of “Land Of Confusion” single, 1986.

Chaque jour semblera si long

Who put fifty tons of shit on the Foreign Office roof?
Who suffers from nine known diseases?
Who gets up in the morning when the sun comes up
And makes their beds, paper clips, bus tickets
All around their heads?
Who congregate around Trafalgar Square
Taking pot shots at the tourists?
Oh you’ve got to watch out
When you wander round the square in the morning
Cos they’re everywhere, they’re everywhere

Here we have an honest man
A civil servant to boot
He lived high up in the Ministry
And when he wished to make a point
He knew just what to do
His window ledges were all covered in grease
“I want them out of here”

He said to me, “I want them gone”
Because you see – Oh don’t you see
None of us are getting any younger
You’ve got to follow your nose
And if it tells you that you’ve got to go
Well that’s because, they’re everywhere,
They’re everywhere

So we called in those men, those horrible men
We set them to work on the rooftops
You see their van is very plain
And I know they’re too ashamed
To wear their by appointment badges anymore
Sometimes they use vaseline, sometimes they use the pill
I’ve often seen them with a gun
But as the years go by, old habits seem to die
And nowadays they knockatize them all
Oh you’ve got to watch out
As you wander round the square in the morning
Oh they’re everywhere, they’re everywhere
