The lamb lies down on Broadway”…

Calling all stations
Can anybody tell me, tell me exactly where I am
I’ve lost all sense of direction
Watching the darkness closing around me
Feeling the cold all through my body
That’s why I’m calling all stations
In the hope that someone hears me
A single lonely voice

I feel the sensation disappearing
There’s a tingling in my arms
And there’s a numbness in my hands

All the broken promises
All my good intentions don’t add up to very much
And I realise whatever happened, whatever happened
I remember all the moments that I’ve wasted in my life
All the things I was always gonna do
Why is it now when it’s too late
That I’ve finally realised it’s important to me
To think that everything that’s dear to me
And is always in my heart
Could so easily be taken
And it’s tearing me apart
Going over and over in my mind
I relive it one second at a time

Calling all stations
Can anybody tell me, tell me exactly where I am
How different things look when your all on your own
Watching the darkness closing all around me
All around me
And I’m lost with feeling
Of your arms to remind me
Of everything that’s dear to me
And is always in my heart
Could so easily be taken
And it’s tearing me apart
Going over and over in my mind
I relive it one second at a time
Don’t you know there’s never been a moment
When I haven’t had the thought
That everything that’s dear to me
And is always in my heart
Could so easily be taken
And it’s tearing me apart
Going over and over in my mind
I relive it one second at a time
As I sit here in the darkness
Feeling so alone
And everything that’s dear to me
And is always in my heart…

You say that I put chains on you
But I don’t think that’s really true
But if you want to be free from me
You gotta lose me in another world

Send me to the Congo I’m free to leave
There’s always somewhere anybody can lead
Send me to the Congo you have to believe
You can do it if you wanna just do what you please

Like a soldier ant
I will wait for the signal to act
To take a walk right through the door
If you don’t want me here any more

Send me to the Congo I’m free to leave
There’s always somewhere anybody can lead
Send me to the Congo you have to believe
You can do it if you wanna just do what you please

Into my heart you came
And gave a whole new meaning to my life
Into my world you brought a light
I thought it never would go out

Send me to the Congo I’m free to leave
There’s always somewhere anybody can lead
Send me to the Congo you have to believe
You can do it if you wanna just do what you please

You can send me to the Congo I’m free to leave
There’s always somewhere anybody can lead
Yes you can send me to the Congo, you have to believe
You can do it if you wanna just do what you please

I would never be the one to say you had no reason
To want me somewhere else far far away
But someday you may understand, someday you will see
That someone who would die for you is all I’ve ever been

Congo the Congo, if that’s how it’s got to be
Congo the Congo, if that’s what you want from me

I would never be the one to say you had no reason
To want me somewhere else far far away
Someday you may understand someday you will see…

I’m a million miles from anywhere, where can I be
Somewhere out on the ocean
Just take a look out on the horizon, what can you see
There’s nothing there for me

I feel shipwrecked, I might as well be shipwrecked
I’m helpless and alone drifting out to sea
I can’t believe what you said to me

Even standing on the corner of a busy city street
I still feel so lonely
Why do you say you want to be with me
But the next day say you don’t

I’m shipwrecked, I might as well be shipwrecked
I’m helpless and alone drifting out to sea
I can’t believe what you said to me
Without you I feel shipwrecked
But I can’t let it show
A million miles away from anywhere, ooh, ooh, ohh

Is it my imagination
Or is it getting darker, are the waves getting higher
I’m a million miles from anywhere
A million miles from anything I know

You know that’s why I’m shipwrecked
I might as well be shipwrecked
I’m helpless and alone drifting out to sea
I can’t believe what you said to me
You know that’s why I’m shipwrecked, shipwrecked
Losing my direction
Please come and rescue me (shipwrecked)
Shipwrecked
Shipwrecked
Shipwrecked
Shipwrecked…

Woke up in the morning staggered out of bed
Thought about getting back again, but went downstairs instead
Read the daily paper have to know the truth
Slammed the door as I ran outside, looked at my watch and cried
Gotta get to work on time
Gotta get to work on time

Then the sky turned a deeper blue
Not a cloud as the sun shone through
But all around rain kept falling to the ground
The wind was blowing but the trees didn’t make a sound
Just another alien afternoon
Just another alien afternoon

Time that I was leaving while there’s still a chance
Before I start believing in what I see or hear
Nothing here to keep me, nothing anywhere
Gotta get out pack my bags before I go insane
Gotta get away in time
Gotta get away in time

Then the sky turned from blue to green
Took on colours I have never seen
Then a sound started ringing in my ears
I heard voices but in truth there’s nobody there
Just another alien afternoon
Just another alien afternoon

To be there back where I belong
To feel again the wind upon my face
To see again all that I took for granted
All that I left and everything I knew

We are home
We are your home
We are all your home

Not another alien afternoon

Never more to go wandering
Never leaving my world behind

There was never a reason
To leave my heart and my home behind
Where I was born is where I should be now
I would never be lonely
I would never be sad again

I wanted to go anywhere
I wanted to see how strange it all could be
Nothing would ever take me away again
Never more to go wandering
Never leaving my world behind
No, no, no, no
Nothing will ever take me away again, away again
No, no, no, no

(Banks/Rutherford/Wilson)

A little piece of something
Falling gently down down down
No one understands you like I do

I’d rather be beside you
Everything we know so well
Tell me what you feel now
Show me what you think of it

It’s not about us anymore
It’s all about the reasons
That we think we’re fighting for
It’s not about hate
It’s not about pain we always feel
I know we have our problems
But we’re not the only ones
It’s not about you it’s not about me
It’s not about anger
It’s more about the loneliness we feel

How can I begin to
Ask for some forgiveness
For all that we have taken
There’s nothing left now

Just a little piece of something
Falling gently down down down
No one understands you no no
Like I do
There’s nothing left now

It’s not about us anymore
It’s all about the reasons
That we think we’re fighting for
It’s not about hate
It’s not about pain we always feel
I know we have our problems
But we’re not the only ones
It’s not about you it’s not about me
It’s not about anger
It’s more about the loneliness we feel

It’s not about us
It’s not about hate
It’s more about the loneliness we feel, can you feel it
It’s not about anger
It’s not about wanting
I know we have our problems
But we’re not the only ones, we’re not the only ones
It’s not about you, it’s not about me…

Talking makes us human that’s what I was told
So why do I find it so difficult to let my feelings unfold
Had I the courage to tell you I’d promise you this

If that’s what you need
I’ll be the river I’ll be the mountain always beside you
If that’s what you need
I will be stronger I will be braver than ever before

When you came along and turned it all around
I promised myself I wouldn’t tell you
Until we stood on solid ground
Holding the candle between us I’ll tell you this

If that’s what you need
I’ll be the river I’ll be the mountain always beside you
If that’s what you need
I will be stronger I will be braver than ever before

And if there’s any kind of danger
I hear you calling out my name
You can follow in my footsteps
And I will lead you safely back again

I never understood you however hard I tried
But it took me a while until I realised
That all the problems were mine
Holding you nearer to me to tell you this

If that’s what you need
I’ll be the river I’ll be the mountain always beside you
If that’s what you need
I will be stronger I will be braver than ever before
And when things go wrong
I’ll be your conscience there to remind you all of your life
When you go wrong
I’ll be the reason you’ll be protected all of your days

(Banks/Rutherford)

There has always been a dividing line
But you choose, you choose, yes you choose not to see it
And then you wonder why you fall
It cuts through the heart of every city
If you climb to the top of the highest building
You can see where it falls ’cause the streetlights stop
The colours start to change
You hear a voice inside you
Not the words that you wanted to hear
Not the things that you wanted to see hey, hey, hey, hey

In the comfort and safety of your own home
Remember those outside in the cold
And the wind and the rain
And take in your hands a little ray of light
And turn it into a beam that pierces the darkness of the night

There has always been a dividing line
But you choose, you choose, yes you choose not to see it
Sometimes we believe if we close our eyes
The rain might wash it away
That’s why we stumble and we fall
Not the words that you wanted to hear
Not the things that you wanted to see hey, hey, hey, hey

When everything that you hold dear to you
Has finally faded away from your life
The last cold ray of sunshine slowly disappears
Round the corner of the building
And leaves you alone
When darkness covers the city and the streets are silent too
What will you turn to…

(Banks/Rutherford)

A day of uncertain weather
Captured in a frame forever
A face in a faded photograph

He must have had a life
Maybe with a family
People who meant everything to him

A sinner, a saint, a soldier
Caught up in a war he never
Had a chance to start or build a life

All gone long ago
Leaving no trace
Disappearing like smoke in the wind
To become just a face without a name
Leaving no trace
Disappearing like smoke in the wind

Hopes and fears important plans
Forgotten memories
Footsteps fading in the sand, ooh
Schemes and dreams small and grand
Nothing left to see
Footsteps fading in the sand, ooh

Someone who cast a shadow
Maybe just a lazy man
Doesn’t make much difference now it’s true

A day of uncertain weather
Captured in a frame forever
A face in a faded photograph

All gone long ago
Leaving no trace
Disappearing like smoke in the wind
To become just a face without a name
One more to add to the total
Of those never heard of again

Yes he’s gone
Just a face without a name
Leaving no trace
Disappearing like smoke in the wind
All gone
Just a face without a name
Leaving no trace
Disappearing like smoke in the wind…

(Banks/Rutherford/Wilson)

Don’t talk back to me, don’t talk back to me
Don’t talk back to me, don’t talk

Going round in circles, hearing too many points of view
Just words to tire me out, small talk I could do without
I would be amazed if you returned to see things my way
Now that you’ve been disrespectful to my sense of pride

Isn’t it a shame that you were lying when you said to me (small talk)
I was the only one, you and I were meant to be
I expect you’ll never really feel the way that I do
All of this is with regret, I’m sure you will agree

Say something to me, anything at all
I want you to mean what you say
I’ve seen all I want to see, and you mean the world to me
I’ve lived for each moment to be with you, with you, with you

Small talk, small talk, small talk, small talk

You say I don’t talk enough, that applies to both of us
Don’t try to sound me out, something I could do without
So much goes on inside your head, I often wonder
Have you heard enough to know, there’s nothing left to say

Say something to me, anything at all
I want you to mean what you say
I’ve seen all I want to see, and you mean the world to me
I’ve lived for each moment to be with you, with you, with you

Small talk
Small talk
Ooh small talk
That’s all I ever hear
Small talk

I’ll be alright
It may take sometime
But I’ll be alright (don’t talk back to me)
I’ll be alright (don’t talk back to me) (don’t want to be alone, nothing worth to carry on)
I’ll be alright (don’t talk back to me) (try hard to understand, you won’t seem to lend a hand)
I’ll be alright (don’t talk back to me) (without you’ll fail to see, you never spare a thought for me)
I’ll be alright (don’t talk back to me) (so many things you said, going round in circles)
I’ll be alright (don’t talk back to me) (I’ll rise above it all, enough to see another day)
I’ll be alright
I’ll be alright
Don’t talk back to me…

(Banks/Rutherford/Wilson)

You’re no longer part of my life
I must remind myself again
Too much has happened to us to cause each other pain
It’s over now, there’s too much guilt to share
Once there would have been a time for talking and learning

There must be some other way
To get where we have to go
There must be some other way
Please show me another way
Once it would have been so easy, to do what we have to do
There must be some other way
Please show me another way

Are we no more than parts in a play
Letting other people, strangers say our lines?
To think it should come to this, after all these years
What was mine and what should stay behind
Once there would have been a time of sharing, of caring

There must be some other way
To get where we have to go
There must be some other way
Please show me another way
Once it would have been so easy to do what we have to do (there must be some other way)
There must be some other way
Please show me, show me another way…

——

There’s nothing much left to say
We have said it once and said it all again
This time we have gone too far, it could never be the same
It’s time to carry on create new lives
Once we promised we would stay together forever

There must be some other way
To get where we have to go (there must be some other way)
There must be some other way
Please show me another way
Once it would have been so easy to do what we have to do (what we have to do)
You know there must be some other way
Please show me another way
You know there must be another way
Please show me, show me another way (there must be some other way)
You know there must be some other way…

(Banks/Rutherford)

As the buildings crumble, tumble to the ground
And the dust-filled smoke rises in the air
You know that somebody somewhere looks with pride, they’re satisfied

To all who think they know
To everyone that knows that they’re right
D’you ever wonder why
D’you never ask the question even in the depths of night?

Now as the daylight fading ends another day
For too many life will never be the same
And it is all for the reason they will never understand

To all who think they know
To everyone that knows that they’re right
D’you ever wonder why
D’you never ask the question even in the depths of night?

And on the morning after do you realise
See the ruined faces and the ruined lives
Inside your head do you never have the thought a moment of doubt?

To all who think they know
To everyone that knows that they’re right
D’you ever wonder why
D’you never ask the question even in the depths of night?

There are only dreams one like any other
What means the earth to one or few means nothing to another
There are only dreams like any other

Drawing lines upon the sand, on the land, on the sea
Then dying to defend them seems quite meaningless to me

Don’t you know what means the earth to some or only one
Can mean just nothing nothing nothing to another

There are only dreams like any other
There are only differences, worth living but not dying for

One man’s joy makes another man weep
Nothing you can do is ever gonna change it
One man’s saint is another man’s fool
One man’s hot is another man’s cool

And when the war is over, won
Will there be peace for evermore?

Statues carved right out of stone, out of wood, made from gold
Praying for their mercy that won’t save their souls

Don’t you know what means the earth to some or only one
Can mean just nothing nothing nothing to another

There are only dreams like any other
There are only hopes and beliefs one like any other (there are only dreams like any other)
Worth living but not dying for
Living but not dying for not killing for
There are only dreams like any other like any other

To all of those who think that they know
All I can say yes all I can say

One man’s joy makes another man weep
Nothing you can do is ever gonna change it
One man’s saint is another man’s fool
One man’s hot is another man’s cool

There are only dreams like any other
There are only hopes and beliefs, one like any other
There are only dreams like any other…

et ça me déchire

Et ça me déchire

Et ça me déchire
Me sentant si seul
Et tout ce qui m’est cher
Et est toujours dans mon cœur…

(Banks/Rutherford)

Je me sens quand même si seul

Rien ici pour me retenir, rien nulle part

Quand tu feras fausse route

(Banks/Rutherford/Wilson)

Dis-moi quelque chose, n’importe quoi

Dis-moi quelque chose, n’importe quoi

(Banks/Rutherford/Wilson)

Je dois me rappeler encore

She would have wanted you to make it
She would have wanted you to be strong
She would have hoped that you could take it
And fill your days with sweeter songs

And though it seems right now that you can’t go on
You find the strength somehow to get through
For it will all make sense in the final hour
She’ll be waiting for you

She would have wanted you to live it wild
And take the fruit from life’s rich tree
She would have hoped that you could teach her child
All the things that she believed

And though it seems right now that you can’t go on
You find the strength somehow to get through
For it will all make sense in the final hour
She’ll be waiting for you

The sun is setting now, the road’s ahead
It may be full of twists and snares
And you will always think of things she said
And see her face in a thousand stares

And though it seems right now that you can’t go on
You find the strength somehow to get through
For it will all make sense in the final hour
She’ll be waiting for you

Ça sonne parfois très PC (That’s what you said, Love Police, Oughta know by now) mais rien de bien embêtant. Au milieu de tout ca, on a deux ballades superbes : It’s in your eyes et surtout The same moon. The times they are a-changin’.

It’s there in the eyes of the children
In the faces smiling in the windows
You can come on out, come on open the doors
Brush away the tears of freedom

Now we’re here, there’s no turning back
We have each other
We have one voice

Hand in hand we will lay the tracks
Because the train is coming to carry you home

Come dance with me
Come on and dance into the light
Everybody dance into the light

There’ll be no more hiding in shadows of fear
There’ll be no more chains to hold you
The future is yours – you hold the key
And there are no walls with freedom

Now we’re here, we won’t go back
We are one world
We have one voice

Side by side we are not afraid
Because the train is coming to carry you home

Come dance with me
Come on and dance into the light
Everybody dance into the light

Do you see the sun – it’s a brand new day
Oh, the world’s in your hands, now use it
What’s past is past, don’t turn around
Brush away the cobwebs of freedom

Now we’re here, there’s no turning back
You have each other
You have one voice

Hand in hand you can lay the tracks
Because the train is coming to carry you home

Come dance with me
Come on and dance into the light
Everybody dance into the light

I remember the night you weren’t at home
Had to work late is what I heard
That’s what you said
I can never forget the way it felt,
you needed some time to work it out,
that’s what you said
and now I feel a fool.

‘Cos late at night I call your name,
I’m wondering what for,
‘cos I’ve seen those other guys
sniffin’ around your door.

Whatever happened to the words
‘Lovers for all eternity?’
That’s what you said,
I was your Romeo, you were my Juliet,
eternally
that’s what you said
and now I feel a fool.

‘Cos late at night I hear your voice
calling out my name,
oh I know it’s just a dream
but every night’s the same.

I carried a torch for you, through the thick and thin
you know it don’t seem right that I won’t see you again
No no

Late at night I call your name,
I’m wondering what for,
‘cos I keep seeing those other guys
sniffin’ around your door.

I carried a torch for you through the wind and rain
I’ll never forget you, but I won’t see you again
No no

I thought your friends all liked me
I thought I fitted in just right,
that’s what you said.
Soon I’ll be gone and you’ll be free,
you can go find the things that you want.
That’s what you said
and I won’t feel a fool

‘cos late at night I still call your name,
I’m wondering what for,
‘cos I keep seeing those other guys
sniffin’ around your door.

What for?

(Music – Collins/Lyrics – Michaela Odone)
Once upon a time I made a lion roar –
he was sleeping in the sunbeams on the old zoo floor.
I had gone to see the park where my papa used to play,
it’s called called Villa Borghese and it’s on the way
to East Africa.

Down on Grand Comoro Island, where I grew past four,
I could swim and fish and snorkel on the ocean floor,
and the wind laughed, and the wind laughed through the trees as if to say,
here’s a child who’ll want the world to go his way
in East Africa, in East Africa.

Suddenly for me the world turned upside down –
far from my friends the lions and the dolphins came this awful sound.

Dark shadows, sounds of thunder raging over me,
came this monster called ‘A-dre-no-leu-ko-dys-tro-phy’
Where’s my East Africa?

Well they said, they said, they said (the ones who know it all)
they said from now on for you there will be no more standing tall,
so I took my parents’ hands, I lifted my head to say
I’ll just have to be a hero, there’s no other way!
Back to East Africa
Back to East Africa
Back to East Africa
Come with me I’m going back, going back to East Africa.

(Collins)
Father comes home ‘cos his money’s run out –
seems a little loose tonight, he starts to shout.

Dinner’s not on the table, seems mother’s not able,
she’s staring at the TV.

You can smell it on his breath, feel it in his touch,
he never meant to hit her hard, but he’s like that when he’s had too much.

It’s just another story ’bout going too far,
it’s just another story ’bout going too far.

Well the kid’s at school, she’s getting good grades,
but the peer pressure’s starting now – too bad, she had it made.

Seems there’s always someone trying to push you to do something, you know, ain’t the way they told you to –
it’s hard to see
the things you taught her, how to be, it’s like you told her nothing, selective memory.

Come on try it, it’s just a smoke, ain’t gonna kill you, so she takes a toke –
fade to grey.

It’s just another story ’bout going too far,
it’s just another story ’bout going too far.

Well the guys at work seemed OK, they’d buy you a drink, get you laid, what’s wrong with that?

Why’d they have more money than you, expensive cars, expensive clothes, d’you ever think of what they do?

At night they’re out, shakin’ people down, when they’re walking together seems they own the town.

But hey, who’s gonna talk, you are their alibi, don’t turn around, don’t ask questions, just walk –

It’s just another story ’bout going too far,
it’s just another story ’bout going too far.

(Collins)

Sometimes I lie awake, wondering if I’ll make it out of here,
but the wind blows round my heels, so I stay
I remember lying there, wishing I could be someone else
trying to find somehow to get away.

If I asked him nicely d’you think he’s show me how to fly,
‘cos the dust has weighed my wings down, and I’m too tired to try.

Sometimes I sit here hearing voices in my head
I try to understand, to make some sense.
I wonder if I had to, would I lie to save myself?
A plea of guilty, but self defence.

If I asked him nicely d’you think he’d show me how?
I’m sure he’s out there listening, but he’s too tied up right now to try

Try, all of my sins
‘cos I can’t stop now,
just don’t leave me behind.

Sometimes I lie awake, wondering if I’ll get out of here,
but the words stick in my throat and I stay.
I remember lying there, wishing I could be someone else,
trying to find somehow to get away

If I asked him nicely d’you think he’s show me how to fly,
‘cos the dust has weighed my wings down, and I’m too tired to try.

(Collins)

She came looking for me with her arms open wide,
like some long lost friend of mine.

She said ‘Excuse me, but do you remember me ?’
I said ‘No, I don’t believe I do’
So she looked me up and down
and undressed me with her eyes,
then she said ‘You’ve got everything I need, you’ve got everything I want’

So I said ‘OK,

you can wear my hat,
you can have my coat,
you can take my shirt
‘cos I don’t need it.
You can wear my shoes,
you can take my socks,
come on take my bag it’s yours

If you love it,
you can have it if you love it,
ain’t no problem if you love it,
come on take it if you love it.

So her friend came up to me
with a pen and paper in her hand,
expressing some interest in the number of my room,
She said ‘Excuse me, but do you remember me? ‘
I said ‘No,’ she said ‘Can I appeal to you?’

So I looked her up and down
and realising her insinuations I blushed
she said ‘Listen babe you don’t know me,
no you don’t know me but you owe me,

and I love you,
yes I love you,
put your arms around me ‘cos I love you,
I got all your records and I love you’

So I suggested

you can wear my hat,
you can have my coat,
you can take my shirt
‘cos I don’t need it.
You can wear my shoes,
you can take my socks,
come on take my bag it’s yours

If you love it,
you can have it if you love it,
ain’t no problem if you love it,
come on take it if you love it.

Well later on that day this guy came to me
with a scrap of paper in his hand
he said ‘Hey buddy can you sign your name for me?’
I said ‘Why, do I owe you money?’ He said ‘No’
I said ‘Listen pal do I know you? Have we ever met?
Why do you want my name on this little piece of paper?

He said ‘I love you,
I don’t know you but I love you,
like my brother I love you,
put your arms around me ‘cos I love you’

I said ‘Hey let’s not rush things

you can wear my hat,
you can have my coat,
you can take my shirt
‘cos I don’t need it.
You can wear my shoes,
you can take my socks,
come on take my bag it’s yours

If you love it,
you can have it if you love it,
ain’t no problem if you love it,
come on take it if you love it.

You can wear my hat,
You can wear my hat,
You can wear my hat,
Come on wear my hat.’

(Collins)

It’s in your eyes,
the love you hide away.
You can’t disguise
the things you feel, the thing you say

If you just call my name
any time at all, I’ll be there.

I don’t know why,
the way you’re falling away from me.
I can’t describe
it’s how it feels, it’s what I see.

If you just call my name
anytime at all,
anytime at all,
anytime at all, I’ll be there.

I look around, all I see is you
but you gotta tell me that you want me too.
Look at me, you’re all that I need, it’s true.

I’m here, just call my name
anytime at all, I’ll be there.

I look around, all I see is you
but you gotta tell me that you want me too.
Look at me, you’re all that I need, it’s true.

I can’t disguise
the love I wait for you to share
I can’t deny
if you reach out and touch my hand it’s there.

Or just call my name,
anytime at all,
anytime at all,
anytime at all, I’ll be there.

(Collins)

You oughta know by now
that a man can’t hold on forever,
so why do you keep waiting here
when you know it makes me want you more?

You oughta know by now
how it fells to be loved,
so why d’you keep me hanging here,
with this stone around my heart, dragging me down, down, down

when all I’m trying to do is trying to get next to you, let me in, let me in.

You oughta know by now
or maybe someone should show you
that a man needs to be loved
and even in this man’s world
with you it don’t come easy

You oughta know by now
that no man can sleep at night
with a burning in his heart
that would tear this man apart
take me out of my misery,

‘cos all I’m trying to do is trying to get next to you, let me in, let me in.

You oughta know by now
just how good it feels to be wanted,
and no man could love you more,
so why can’t you show me something,
just a little bit of something?

You oughta know by now
all the things a man has to do in his life,
and all these things I do
you know that I do it all for you, I do it all for you.

‘Cos all I’m trying to do is trying to get next to you,
yes all I’m trying to do is trying to get next to you.

Let me in, let me in,
Let me in your heart.

(Collins)

Seems I’ve lingered too long in the darkness
unlock the door, turn the light on and wait.
I should know better than to rest on a promise
but this body before you has seen too much pain.

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I’m waiting for you
just give me a sign, oh feet please don’t fail me now.

It’s at this time we feel the emotion,
nothing is wasted, nothing is lost.
I’m sure that I’ve been here before sometime
some bridges are reached but never are crossed.

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I’m waiting for you
just give me a sign, oh feet please don’t fail me now.

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I’m waiting for you
just give me a sign, oh feet please don’t fail me now.

Don’t fail me now
‘cos it’s out of my control.
I’m coming with you,
I’m right beside you,
oh feet don’t fail me now.

Seems I’ve lingered too long in the darkness
unlock the door, turn the light on and wait.
I should know better than to rest on a promise
but this body before you has seen too much pain.

Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I’m waiting for you
just give me a sign, don’t let me go.
Take me down, take me down to the water,
take my hand, learn me all I should know.
Here I am, I’m waiting for you
just give me a sign, oh feet please don’t fail me now.

(Collins)

When the daylight comes and I look across the room,
I see you’re gone.
As the morning breaks and I reach to hold your hand
I can see, see I’m the only one.
Well, your clothes are gone and your bags are packed
but the bed’s still warm where you lay
now I need your love to come shining through
to carry me, come carry me away.

If you choose a time, I’ll catch the moon
I’ll see you there
from wherever I am, wherever you are
we’ll find somewhere.
I see the same stars in the same sky
shining down on you,
I’ll be looking up from wherever I am
and it’s you I’ll see if you’re looking too.

There’ll be days that’ll seem much longer,
some nights will seem so cold,
But I see hope on the horizon
and it’s gotta come soon – please don’t be too long,
don’t be too long.

If you choose a time, we can catch the moon
I’ll see you there
Whenever it is, from wherever you are
oh we’ll find, yes we’ll find somewhere.
are you looking at the same moon?

(Collins)

If we can cross at the place that divides us.
cross the river, the river so wide,
if we can smother the pain that’s inside us,
deny the demons that wait by our side,
we can find, find the light

Our nights are filled with the light of the same moon,
we share the comfort of the same stars.
Our days are bright with the light of the same sun,
that don’t matter, can’t you see what we are,
what we are, what we become?

Keep our sights on the way ahead,
don’t look back, it won’t help us now.
The storm we left so far behind
seems a dark memory that starts to fade,
but till we see the light we will not be safe.

We all sink or swin in the same ocean,
break our skin and we will bleed
our minutes pass with the same motion,
we face the same danger, we share the same needs,
we’re all the same, you and me.

Keep our sights on the way ahead,
don’t look back, that won’t help us now.
Upstream, the river gets too wide
so we must build that bridge right here,
‘cos if we wait we will not reach the other side.
See under that clear blue sky
the winds of change are blowing hard and long,
and they’ll not stop to rest ‘cos the change is gonna come

Our nights are filled with the light of the same moon,
we share the comfort of the same stars.
Our days are bright with the light of the same sun,
that don’t matter, can’t you see what we are,
what we are, what we become?

Keep our sights on the way ahead,
don’t look back, it won’t help us now.
‘cos upstream the river gets too wide
and if we don’t build that bridge right here, right now,
you know we’ll never ever reach the other side.

(Collins)

Well it’s a long, long road when you’re out there alone,
no matter what side you’re on,
but there’s a heart of gold behind the smile
and it brought me to where I belong.

‘Cos I’d set my sights on finding you
and I’m staying forever, you know it’s true
Yes I’d set my sights on finding you
don’t be lonely tonight, we can make it alright

No matter what you say,
no matter who you are,
love always finds a way
finds a way to your heart.

Well it’s a cold lonely road, but you can survive
no matter which way you choose,
and as long as there’s life behind these eyes
I’m here with you, win or lose.

If you let your light shine on through
someone will come round to pull you through,
yes just let your light shine on through,
don’t be lonely tonight, you can make it alright.

Just hold my hand,
come with me a while, I’ll make you smile.
Just hold my hand
there’s someone who loves you, it’s me, oh it’s me.

No matter what you say,
no matter who you are,
love always finds a way
finds a way to your heart.

It’s alright that you cry if you’re lonely sometime,
no matter who’s by your side,
‘cos the love that you look for is inside us all,
but it’s something you have to find

And I’d set my sights on finding you
and I’m staying forever, you know it’s true.
Yes I’d set all my sights on findingyou
don’t be lonely tonight, we can make it alright.

No matter what you say,
no matter who you are,
love always finds a way
finds a way to your heart.

(Bob Dylan)

Come gather ’round people wherever you roam,
and admit that the waters around you have grown,
and accept it that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone
if your time to you is worth savin’
then you better start swimmin’
or you’ll sink like a stone
for the times they are a-changin’

Come writers and critics who prophecise with your pen
and keep your eyes wide,
the chance won’t come again,
and don’t speak too soon
for the wheel’s still in spin
and there’s no tellin’ who
that it’s namin’
for the loser now
will be later to win
for the times they are a-changin’

Come senators, congressmen,
please heed the call
don’t stand in the doorway,
don’t block the hall,
for he that’ gets hurt
will be he who has stalled,
there’s a battle
outside and it’s ragin’
it’ll soon shake your windows
and rattle your walls
for the times they are a-changin’

Come mothers and fathers
throughout the land,
and don’t criticize
what you can’t understand
your sons and your daughters
are beyond your command,
your old road is rapidly agin’,
please get out of the new one
if you can’t lend your hand
for the times they are a-changin’

The line it is drawn,
the curse it is cast,
the slow one now will
later be fast,
as the present now
will later be past
the order is rapidly fadin’
and the first one now
will later be last
for the times they are a-changin’

4/5

The geese and the ghost”.

(Rutherford/Robertson)

I didn’t know when I was lucky
Discontented feeling bad
Filled with envy
For possessions other people had

I found my pride had always hurt me
Fought the world to gain control
Not realising
I was sitting on a beach of gold

Oh lord I’m a poor man
With all the riches I can hold
I’m a beggar
And I’m sitting on a beach of gold

The problems I encountered
Gave me strength helped me sustain
To know the pleasure
First I had to cure the pain

When I was searching for solutions
I found the answer lay in me
I’m a drifter
But I’m drifting on a silver sea

Oh lord I’m a poor man
With all the riches I can hold
I’m a beggar
And I’m sitting on a beach of gold

I didn’t have courage
My life was as dark as night
When alone in the darkness
I saw the brightest light
Let the light shine down

Are you out there now on empty
Feel you’ve nothing left to give
Sick of trying
Have you lost the will to live?

Don’t be drowning in the shallows
With the beach so near at hand
Hear the voice say
Stand up get up
And join me on the gilded sand

Come and join me on the beach
With all the riches I can hold
Cause I’m a beggar
And I’m sitting on a beach of gold

Oh lord I’m a poor man
With all the riches I can hold
I’m a beggar
I’m sitting on a beach of gold

My children my salvation
The father to this man
They’re my teachers
Playing on the golden sand

With my family all around me
I’ve all the riches I can hold
I’m a beggar
Sitting on a beach of gold

Oh lord I’m a poor man
With all the riches I can hold
I’m a beggar
Sitting on a beach of gold

(Rutherford/Neil)

And she pours herself another cup of coffee
As she contemplates the stain across the wall
and it’s in between the cleaning and the washing
That’s when looking back’s
The hardest part of all

And she always did her best to try and please him
While he always did his best to make her cry
And she got down on her knees to stop him leaving
But he always knew one day he’d say goodbye

Where are your friends
Where are your children
Is this your house
Is this your home
Does nothing ever last forever
Does everybody sleep alone

And he tears the business tags from his old suitcase
As he packs away the pieces of his life
They all love him but they always try to change him
That’s what happens when a girl becomes a wife

And she pours herself another cup of coffee
As the pictures leave a clean space on the wall
and it’s in between the leaving and the loving
That’s when looking back’s
The hardest part of all

Where are your friends
Where are your children
Is this your house
Is this your home
Does nothing ever last forever
Does everybody sleep alone

Don’t look back
Don’t give up
Pour yourself another cup

(William Robinson, Jr.)

I don’t like you but I love you,
Seems that I’m always thinking of you.
Oh, you treat me badly I love you madly;
You really got a hold on me,
You really got a hold on me, baby.
I love you and all I want you to do is just hold me,
Hold me, hold me, hold me.

I don’t want you but I need you,
Don’t want to kiss you but I need to.
Oh, you do me wrong now my love is strong now;
You really got a hold on me,
You really got a hold on me, baby.
I love you and all I want you to do is just hold me,
Hold me, hold me, hold me.

You tighter,
Tighter I want to leave you don’t want to stay here,
Don’t want to spend another day here.
Oh, I want to split now;
I can’t quit now.
You really got a hold on me,
You really got a hold on me.
Baby really got a hold on me,
I said you really got a hold on me.

(Rutherford/Neil)

You can’t forgive
And you won’t forget
We did something
That we both regret mea culpa

I held my breath while you
Took your time
To tell the world
What’s yours is mine mea culpa

You don’t need me
You don’t need anyone at all
You’ve got what you desired
You lit the fire
And watched the rise and fall

And in your eyes I could see my face
A non believer
In a state of grace mea culpa

I see no reason for your complaint
You got the sinner
And not the saint mea culpa

I can’t say much I can’t say anything at all
You tell the story well
Then you retire to watch the rise and fall

You never know what’s in your heart
Until you look
You never know what’s in your heart
Until you look
Take a look
Just take a look
Just take a look
Just take a look

Ad libs to fade

(Rutherford/Carrack)

Looking back over my shoulder
I can see that look in your eye
I never dreamed it could be over
I never wanted to say goodbye

Looking back over my shoulder
With an aching deep in my heart
I wish that we were starting over
Oh instead of drifting so far apart

Everybody told me you were leaving
Funny I should be the last to know
Baby please tell me that I’m dreaming
I just never want to let you go

Looking back over my shoulder
I can see that look in your eye
Turning my heart over and over
I never wanted to say goodbye

I don’t mind everybody laughing
But it’s enough to make a grown man cry
Cos I can feel you slipping through my fingers
I don’t even know the reason why

Every day it’s a losing battle
Just to smile and hold my head up high
Could it be that we belong together
Baby won’t you give me one more try
One more try

Looking back over my shoulder
I can see that look in your eye
I never dreamed it could be over
I never wanted to say goodbye

Looking back over my shoulder
Oh with an aching feeling inside
Cutting me up, deeper and deeper
Fills me with a sadness that I can’t hide

Looking back over my shoulder
I can see that look in your eye
I never dreamed no no it could be over
I never wanted to say goodbye

Looking back over my shoulder
I can see that look in your eye

(Rutherford/Neil)

Last night I shook hands with the devil
In a dream that I can never lose
He laughed when he saw me cryin’
At the pictures on the evening news
He said it’s not really a dilemma
You’re just a little out of touch
Don’t think of the situation
Cos it’ll make you think too much

Someone always hates someone
Someone always hates someone
Someone always sells a gun
Cos someone always hates someone

A child will be born tomorrow
As open as an empty cup
And we’ll fill it with hope and sorrow
The very things that messed us up
We’ll ask him to join the congregation
A hindu moslem christian or jew
Pretty soon he’ll recognise his brothers
But soon he’ll know the enemy too

Someone always hates someone
Someone always hates someone
Someone always buys a gun
Cos someone always hates someone

I died and I went to heaven
In a dream I never had before
A good friend who had gone before me
Had kindly left my name at the door
I looked on the face of the almighty
Couldn’t help myself
I started to shout
How come you made a mess of things
How come you didn’t work it out

He said
Someone always hates someone
Someone always hates someone
There’s so much love for everyone
But someone always hates someone

(Rutherford/Robertson)

It was an unbelievable night
She was an unremarkable girl
You may not call it poetry
But it changed my world

It was an unforgettable dawn
She was an indisputable fact
Even if I could have
I might not have it back

It’s an unexceptional day
She’s an unavoidable truth
Uncompromised elation
Suspended since my youth

It’s an unforgivable lie
I have nothing in my defence
There can be no forgiveness
To caution this descent

It wasn’t in a dream
A film or on TV
This was really happening
Happening to me
Though I may protest
Suggest I never knew
The ghost comes back to haunt me
The ghost of sex and you

I held her hand outside the hotel
Kissed her mouth in the back of the car
Whether fact or fantasy
I knew we’d gone too far

I feel her breath on the back of my neck
She’s lying naked here on the floor
Wrap the sheet around her
Disappear beyond the door

It wasn’t in a dream
A film or on TV
This was really happening
Happening to me
Though I may protest
Suggest I never knew
The ghost comes back to haunt me
The ghost of sex and you

It was an unbelievable night
She was an unremarkable girl
You may not call it poetry
But it changed my world
The ghost of sex and you

It was an unforgettable dawn
She was an indisputable fact
Even if I could have
I might not have it back
Sex and you

It’s an unexceptional day
She’s an unavoidable truth
Uncompromised elation
Suspended since my youth
Sex and you

It’s an unforgivable lie
I have nothing in my defence
There can be no forgiveness
To caution this descent
The ghost of sex and you

(Rutherford/Carrack)

Just a minor indiscretion
No need to apologise
I don’t want this to become an obsession
But I just can’t believe my eyes

Evidence in my possession
Points a finger straight at you
Every day I’m closer to a confession
If only I can face the truth

Every mistake that you make
Drives the knife into my heart
Twisting down deeper and deeper
Still tearing me apart

I’m trying to find a grain of truth in this web of lies
I’m trying to find a grain of truth in this web of lies

You swear to god you’re on the level
And you’ve nothing more to hide
Then I turn around and “speak of the devil”
You’re both together side by side

Every mistake that you make
Seems more careless than the last
I’m just amazed that you try to cover
The tracks of your past

I’m trying to find a grain of truth in this web of lies
I’m trying to find a grain of truth in this web of lies

Have you got me in your pocket?
Am I eating from your hand
I think we need to shed some light on the matter
So I can really understand

Darlin’ there’s no perfect crime
That’s left without a trace
And right now I’m judge and I’m jury
Till I can rest my case

I’m trying to find a grain of truth in this web of lies
I’m trying to find a grain of truth in this web of lies

(Rutherford/Robertson)

I’d like my life to be simple
I need my life to be straight
I’d like to see my existence
Going great going great
Going great great great

I want my life to be easy
Need my life to be pure
I want to see my success is
Guaranteed that’s for sure
That’s for sure sure sure

Give me the simple life
The plain and the simple life
You’ve got to give me the simple life
The plain and the simple life

Don’t want my life to be anxious
Don’t need my life to be tense
I’d like to see my existence
Making sense making sense
Making sense sense sense

I’d like my life to be simple
Like my life to be plain
So don’t you say that I ever
Live in vain live in vain
That’s insane sane sane

Give me the simple life
The plain and the simple life
Give me the simple life
The plain and the simple

Give me the simple life
The plain and the simple life
Give me the simple life
The plain and the simple

(Rutherford/Neil)

There’s a silver moon
Shining in the room
Where we sleep like spoons together
Lying in the dark
I can feel your heart
And it beats with mine forever

Coming from the street
You can feel the heat
As the city sleeps
In the silence
And the perfect light
Of a summers night
Is broken by the violence

Then a woman screams
And a baby cries
And someone’s dream is shattered
When the nightmares dance
Before your eyes
They can leave you bruised and battered

Then I realise
That I’m by your side
And I’m listening to you breathing
And in this room
With the silver moon
You’re something to believe in

There’s a boy out there
With a crazy stare
And a gun to make a living
In a sea of hate
Where you can’t think straight
In a world that’s unforgiving

And it’s all gone bad
In a world gone mad
And you’re scared that you’ll discover
That the one you love
And the one you trust
Is like all the others

Then I realise
That I’m by your side
And I’m listening to you breathing
And in this room
With the silver moon
You’re something to believe in
You’re something to believe in

And in this room
With the silver moon
You’re something to believe in

(Rutherford/Robertson)

There may be some things about me
Things you don’t want to hear
For the rumours that precede me
May be very true I fear

They tell you I will deceive you
I don’t know how to care
Though my intentions might be good
There’s another darker look beware

When you walk through the door
Hang on to your senses
At best you must assume
It’s a house of many rooms

Some rooms are filled with pleasure
Laughter and love and light
All the things you never see
I keep under lock and key at night

When you walk through the door
Hang on to your senses
At best you must assume
It’s a house of many rooms

If you love me in the light
Love me in the shadow
I’m afraid you must assume
It’s a house of many rooms
A house of many rooms

It’s a house that’s so unstable
There are those who recommend
If they’d the strength and they were able
It ought to be condemned
I don’t agree but I will warn you
At best you must assume
I live in a house of many rooms

Here I’m in the library
Trying to understand
What empowers this behaviour
Degenerates the man
The same apartment later
With the bottle half consumed
I see a house of many rooms

In the parlour I’m your father
Who could ask for more
The bedroom compromise me
With your best friend from next door
In the kitchen being honest
The lounge a lying tongue
Locked in the bathroom
Pretending to be young

The chapel finds me kneeling
Praying for my soul
The painting in the attic
Can’t prevent me growing old
Help me live forever
Silent as a tomb
I live in a house of many rooms

Join me at the dining table
Join me at the feast
Join me in the stable
I’m laying with the beast
You’re walking in the garden
Oblivious who’d know?
I’m in the cellar ready to explode

(Yvonne Wright/Stevie Wonder)

Shattered dreams worthless years
Here am I encased inside a hollow shell
Life began then was done
Now I stare into a cold empty well
The many sounds that meet our ears
The sights our eyes behold
Will open up our merging hearts
And feed our empty souls

I believe when I fall in love with you
It will be forever
I believe when I fall in love this time
It will be forever
Without despair

We will share and the joys of caring
Will not be replaced
What has been must never end
And with the strength we have
Won’t be erased
When the truths of love are planted firm
They won’t be hard to find
And the words of love I speak to you
Will echo in my mind

I believe when I fall in love with you
It will be forever
I believe when I fall in love this time
It will be forever
Ever, ever, ever

I believe when I fall in love with you
It will be forever
I’m so glad that I found someone
To believe in again

God surely answered my prayer
God surely answered my prayer
You know god surely answered my prayer
You know god surely answered my prayer
God always will answer your prayers
Believe in one who will answer my prayer
Thank you god

I believe when I fall in love with you
It will be forever
I believe when I fall in love with you
It will be forever

Come on let’s fall in love
You’re the woman I’ve been waiting for
Come on let’s fall in love
You’re the girl that I really adore
Come on let’s fall in love
Come on baby let’s fall in love
Come on let’s.

(Rutherford/Neil)

Going going home
I hold a memory I can’t let go
Going going home
Going going home

You’re long ago
And far away
But I can still remember you

Going, going home
I’ve got a memory that I can’t let go
And I know I won’t be alone
I’m goin’ home

The ones I love will all be there
And I can see their smiling faces

Oh I’m giving in
It’s like living in a war
It can’t be right
And I can’t fight this world
No more

I don’t care where this highway goes

Going going home
I know I won’t be alone
I’m going
I’m going home

I know you’ll always wait for me
And now I’m going back to you

Oh I’m giving in
It’s like living in a war
It can’t be right
And I can’t fight this world
No more
I don’t care where this highway goes

4/5

I could be a tiger
A loser or a fighter
A man or mouse
You don’t see me

I could be a wonder
An alien among you
But you won’t know
Can’t you see, can’t you see

I stand in open sunlight
I scream and shout
I warn you don’t turn your back on me
You look right through me
Like I’m some chameleon
Don’t turn your back on me

I could be the thin man
Maybe a sumo wrestler
For all you know
For all you care

I could be a genius
Normal or just curious
Why don’t you care
Hear me cry, hear me cry

I stand in open sunlight
I scream and shout
I warn you don’t turn your back on me
You look right through me
Like I’m some chameleon
Don’t turn your back on me

(Banks)

To be here with you alone beside me
Is to leave the world behind
To desire and to hold
To have longed for and be told

I see you, I see no one else at all
In my life, in my heart for evermore
Words of comfort, walls of sound
Unseen and secret, all around, all around

I never saw myself as one to stir or warm
Or believed this could ever be
But you are here you are real
You are all that I could wish

I see you, I see no one else at all
In my life, in my heart for evermore
Words of comfort, walls of sound
Unseen and secret, all around, all around

The stars are out in our world tonight
We can reach and touch them
Forever in their light

In the glare of cold and truthful morning
And not just in candlelight
You remain as the one
That I build my world upon

I see you, I see no one else at all
In my life, in my heart for evermore
Words of comfort, walls of sound
Unseen and secret, all around, walls of sound

She was an only child
With her body and mind she had to much attention
Too much of everything
She was an angel child
But the devil within her would test her on the way

Into the dark filled places underground
She entered in forbidden rooms
Only seventeen

All alone so alone
All alone so alone

Into the tunnel and back toward the light
That shines between the fingers of dark
The light that shines showing the way to the start

She was an only child
She had so far to fall then so far to climb
To get to the light again
She was a special child
She know what was coming but she know she could not turn

Back in the dark filled rooms
One of a crowd but more than on her own

All alone so alone
All alone so alone

Into the tunnel and back toward the light
That shines between the fingers of dark
The light that shines showing the way to the start

Only seventeen somewhere in between

The race is almost over now
The dance is almost done
Remember how it was when it was fun?

All alone so alone
All alone so alone

Into the tunnel and back toward the light
That shines between the fingers of dark
The light that shines showing the way to the start

In the silence of the night, a serpent shape
Moves its way across the stony floor
In the comfort of your life, the serpent said,
You know that you could have still more,
Picture where you want to be
The door is open wide
Don’t you really want to know?

Don’t you want to know how it feels
To see if it’s all worth trying?
You want to know how it feels

Don’t you want to rule the world a little bit,
Who to help and who to leave to swim?
You could better everything, the serpent said,
In your own peculiar way,
History would honour you
No matter what you did
Don’t you really want to try?

You want to know how it feels
And see if it’s all worth trying
You want to know how it could feel,

In the silence of the night, you lie awake,
Turning over in your mind the words:
If at first you lack the nerve, the serpent said,
You could always try again.
And now left upon your own
Has nothing changed at all
Do you really want to know?

You want to know how it feels
And see if it’s all worth trying
You want to know how it could feel,
To be the one.

The key is in the front door
The clock is on the wall
The coals are in the fireplace
Nothing has moved at all
But as you look around you
Still nothings quite the same

The windows are cracked the curtains are torn
Your life disappoints if you want to be free
Hold me never let me know

Do you stand upon the station
Or are you on the train
Do you want to vanish
Or could we begin again
Do I just imagine
Or is it really true?

You want to be free to be on your own
To start a new life you want to leave me
Hold me never let me know

Never let me know
Never let the world we share together
Tumble, be destroyed
Never let me know
Always keep our dreams and memories
Cherished in your heart

On the road we travel
Sometimes I feel I know
You’d rather walk without me
Please say it isn’t so
Just put your arms around me
And never let me go

Without you the world would be cruel and cold
It cannot be true that you want to be free
Hold me never let me go

Put your arms around me never let me go

(Banks)

You think you’re safe from all that’s gone before
No one can touch you now for evermore
It’s out of sight but not out of your mind
You cannot lose it you can only pretend
This is the end my friend this is the end

You’re a great example to us all
A pillar of society, that’s for sure
But I hear those bones shake behind the cupboard door
And I know the combination to free them once more
This is the end my friend this is the end.

I don’t need no one to spy
Telescope or private eye
Cos I know, yes I’ve know it all the while

You go to goodwill functions, charity balls
You walk with royalty in presidential halls
But in your soul a voice is screaming to be heard
No matter how you try it cannot be deterred
This is the end my friend this is the end

I don’t need no one to spy
Telescope or private eye
Cos I know, yes I’ve know it all the while

I hear your modest tones upon the radio
And I see you public face an all-convincing show
You know who you are and where you’re coming from
You know what the future hold you cannot always run
This is the end my friend this is the end

I don’t need no one to spy
Telescope or private eye
Cos I know, yes I’ve know it all the while

You think you’re safe from all that’s gone before
No one can touch you now for evermore
It may be hid but in spite of it all
It’s there in neon letters ten feet tall
This is the end my friend this is the end

(Banks)

And when in times like these so much is secondhand
But somehow passed off as the new
You need to believe some things are worthwhile

Too weak to break out from the hold that pins you down
To loose the voluntary chains
Too strong to concede and leave the field

Never let them get you down
Never let them get you down
Tell them all that you don’t care
Tell them all that this, it’s what you live for
You’d die for
Something to live for
Die for
Shut your eyes then you won’t see
Close your ears then you won’t hear
You won’t care

With honeyed words and oiled smiles the wheels turn
But still we’re running out of steam
Too much to contain prepare for breakdown
The land beside the road is littered with the wrecks
Of those who tried to make it round
But to make it through it’s what you must do

Never let them get you down
Never let them get you down
Tell them all that you don’t care
Tell them all that this, it’s what you live for
You’d die for
Something to live for
Die for
Shut your eyes then you won’t see
Close your ears then you won’t hear
You won’t care

A street in Paris in the rain
I shoot in black and white a hundred frames
I watch your make-up
Begin to run

You show a strange unease
But you’re my subject and it’s me you please
I feel your spirit freeze
As the shutter clicks down

We are in heaven now
As if we broke the bonds of earth somehow
Here for eternity
A piece of you is part of me

I know you’ll never leave
Cos like a primitive I do believe
I have you spirit seized
As the shutter clicks down

We are in heaven now
As if we broke the bonds of earth somehow
Here for eternity
A piece of you is part of me

We are in heaven now
As if we broke the bonds of earth somehow
You’re under my control
Because I’ve captured your immortal soul
Don’t look for signs
Your spirit shines
Here till the end of our days

And now in Paris in the rain
I put the camera in its case again
And in those hundred frames
Another moth to the candle flame

We are in heaven now
As if we broke the bonds of earth somehow
Here for eternity
A piece of you is part of me

(Banks/Hues)

I want to tell you all about a young man
He’ll be known as Dan
Then he was living down in San Diego
Drove an ice-cream van
One night he met a girl in Club Alamo
But she was strictly incognito

They had a drink and when he asked her name
She told him Jennifer
But what he didn’t realize as he was
Dancing close to her
He held the body of a waitress called Kaye
Who used to live in Sacramento
They danced right through the night and into the day
Remaining strictly incognito

He drove her home in the sunlight of morning
He held her close in the car
But fourteen year old Sara Lee was watching
She knew he’d gone much too far

Poor Dan a simple man he just failed to see
It wasn’t Jennifer who kissed him
Cos when Dan took her hand he held Sara Lee
She knew that she could convict him

So Dan got ten years to dream in state detention
And lost the use of his car
And all because his waitress Kaye forgot to mention
It’s not always clear who we are

Now she’s waiting tables in Paloma
Near the Four-O-Five
And there’s another twenty-eight personas
Keeping her alive
Next time your waitress looks you right in the eye
You’d better exercise your veto
And keep your mind right on that blueberry pie
Remaining strictly incognito

(Banks)

Like a fuse to the end will burn
Like a wave when the tide has turned
You keep on coming regardless
You won’t accept defeat

And in the light of a cold grey dawn
When all seemed lost and you felt so forlorn
You sensed a warmth surround you
And now you find you’re
No longer on your own

It’s impossible unbelievable news
It’s impossible but it’s true

You never thought you would ever be here
You never even dared to hope you would ever be here
In a world you used to dream of
And watch from afar

After all of the time gone by
Searching fruitlessly asking why
It’s hard to stop the trying
To truly realize

That all the pain all that’s gone before
Lies behind and you can close the door
In the past forever
No need to worry
No need to fear at all

It’s impossible unbelievable news
It’s impossible but it’s true

You never thought you would ever be here
You never even dared to hope you would ever be here
In a world you used to dream of
And watch from afar

In every minute of every hour so many dreams die
Do you believe it will be any different this time
This dream will last forever
This day will never end

Now the fog surrounds you
Swirling all around you
Confusing all your senses
All you see are phantoms
Always just out of reach
They tantalize and beckon
Seduce but without promise
You don’t want to be here anymore
You don’t want to be here to take it anymore
Now the water rises
It takes you where it will
You cannot choose direction
Or control the motion
And in the end you’re thrown up
On an island in the darkness
Nothing is familiar
Tell me are you frightened on your own
Do you have the will to carry on?
